SOUND FINANCIAL FOOTING AND PRESTIGIOUS AWARDSWow this summer has flown by. When

this is published, we will be close to the first day of fall. All the great events kept my mind on more important things of life – cars, coffee, and fun!

In the August board meeting, our treasurer, Donna Helberg, went over the final numbers for the completed events this year. I knew something was up when she was handing out the reports. Donna had an aura of excitement. The sound of her voice exuded victory. Christmas in August?

As we went through the financials, each and every completed event this year was well attended and financially successful! Generally, we can say that attendance was over estimates and costs came in under estimates. Importantly, our driver education events have continued the success which began in 2017.

While profit is not our motive, keeping our events on sound financial footing is important to keeping our club viable. It’s a real balancing act to keep the costs down on events while redlining the fun. I’m proud to say that our efforts are working!

On August 2nd ,we held our monthly social at Wine Country Motorsports. The event was well attended. The food

included a Mexican buffet with amazing fajita-style chicken and beef. The weak point for me was the out-of-this-world chocolate chip and oatmeal-raisin cookies. Couldn’t stop with just one.

PCA National gave RMR several prestigious awards. RMR got 3rd place for the top region website with Scott Rogers our webmaster. Our HighGear magazine also won 3rd place for top region newsletter with Russ Rydberg as editor. RMR also got 3rd place for the public service award with Florence Mackin as Charity and Good Works Chair. These awards show the level of talent, dedication and commitment our volunteers give to our club. A big thank you goes out to Scott, Russ and Florence, as well as the others who worked with them to accomplish such fine work.

We had two driving events at the Colorado State Patrol track in August – our annual Ladies’ Day and our new “Faster than a CSP?” novice DE. The chairs of Ladies’ Day were Stacy Robins and Elaine Liedtke. The chair for “Faster than a CSP?” was Pete “Zoom” Romenesko. Our chairs and their team of volunteers did a fantastic job in putting on these well-attended events.

At Ladies’ Day, we had a distinguished driving instructor – Randy Pobst.

Randy is a champion pro race driver with numerous awards. I’m one of his many fans. It was amazing seeing Randy give both classroom and in-car instruction to our RMR women. In speaking with Randy, he expressed to me how our women’s driving program is the most advanced in the country and commended our program.

On August 18th, we held our “Smokin’ Tires and Smokin’ BBQ” autocross. Jon Barr and Carl Boecher chaired the event. Jon and Carl have been chairing the August autocross for several years now and really have this event down! The course was very challenging with the beginning being a 360 -degree circle – or so it looked. That “perfect” circle was not so perfect when driven, making for quite a challenge. We got four runs in the morning. However, rains came in the afternoon knocking our afternoon runs down to two. It was definitely a fun event enjoyed by all.

I will write about our Triple Bypass Tour and Club Picnic in my next article next month. Enjoy the remainder of summer. Remember, if you are at an event, please thank a volunteer. Our volunteers make our club happen.

PICNIC TIME! It is that time again! September is picnic time…

September 8th to be exact. We are back at the Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood this year! Stevinson Imports, our sponsor, will also have some vehicles on display for us to check out! Don’t forget to bring your outdoor games!

It is crazy hard to find a place with enough tables and parking for our group! If you know of a place that can handle 200+ people, let me know! We may use your suggestion for 2019!

If you played to the game of skill at Lamar Street, the number of Skittles candies in the jar was 715. This was to represent the date PCA shows we were chartered, July 15, 1958. Congrats to Brian Bobich who guessed the closest with 718! He was on hand to pick up his grand prize that night! Congratulations to all the winners! I will have contacted all the winners. If you weren’t contacted, sorry, you did not win this time. I will have the prizes at the picnic. If you are one of the winners and will not be able to come, I will mail them out later.

60th Anniversary shirts anyone? We have a limited quantity of shirts on hand (mostly women shirts) for immediate purchase. The shirts will be available for purchase at the Picnic (our September 8th social). Shirts are also available on our website under the “Latest RMR News” section. You will be taken to a specific page only for our 60th Anniversary. This page will be active through the end of the year. Don’t delay! Order before the holiday rush!!

One last word; I would like to encourage all members to be friendly with other members attending the events. You never know, you may create a new friendship that lasts a lifetime! You could also be a mentor to someone new at the event. We need to work together for the greater good…….. Keeping this wonderful club growing! It is up to all of us to spread the word of PCA.

It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!!!!

Cheers! Holly Jackson [email protected]

13HighGear 1958 - 2018 | Celebrating 60 Years |

What a great day for our “ Beauties and their Beasts “ at the PCA Ladies’ Day.

A full article with pictures and stories will be coming out in the October issue, but we wanted to get our “Thank you” out now. We had a beautiful day Saturday, August 11th at the Colorado State Patrol track with our 60 beautiful drivers and their “beasts”. The day was full of excitement, smiles and adrenalin. We first and foremost want to thank all our participants showing up ready to learn and go fast and being gracious to one another. Of course, we could not of done this without all the hard work of the many volunteers — Thousands of woman/man hours went in to creating this amazingly successful weekend.

Last but not least, we could not have done this without our sponsors. Their hard work and assistance helped to create a safe and fun event. Please patronage their business when possible.

TRACK TALK

Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

ANOTHER FIRST!That’s right, another “first” - a DE

just for first-timers.

The Faster than a Colorado State Patrol DE was held on Sunday, August 12th at the training facility of the Colorado State Patrol in Golden. Event Chair Pete Romenesko, Chief Driving Instructor Scott Henderson, and an awesome team of volunteers put on quite the event.

In keeping with our Raising the BarHigher theme, this was another “brain child’ of the CDI Committee. The thought was to capitalize on already having all of our equipment transported there for Saturday’s Ladies’ Day. It provided Ladies’ Day participants the opportunity for one more track day, as well as offering a friendly “starter” track for novices to “dip their toes in the water.”

We had 32 novice drivers participate, and, coupled w ith Satu rday ’s Ladies’ Day, it made the weekend a tremendous success!

Several of the participants initially caught “track fever” at last spring’s DE 101 seminar – now they’re hooked and are ready to tackle the October 13-14 DE at High Plains Raceway.

Terms such as “the line,” high and long vision, outside-inside-outside, late apex, track out, smooth is fast,

and having soft hands are now beginning to make sense.

Not only was it an enjoyable learning experience, the Colorado Lung Cancer Fund, which benefits the University of Colorado Anschutz Cancer Center’s world-class research team, received donations as the event charity.

R O C K Y M O U N T A I N THUNDER CLUB RACE AND ADVANCED DE

September 14-16

The Club Race weekend is such a special event - I encourage you to come out to experience it.

You’ l l witness f irsthand what PCA Club Racing is all about. It’s a spectacle, and it’s a great way to introduce your family to the track. There is no cost, and not only will you see some great racing, you can observe drivers’ meetings, walk the paddock to see all of the cars up close, and visit with drivers - some may even invite your family to sit in their race car driver’s seat!

Club Racing is for everyone! Some of PCA’s best national and local men and women drivers will be there. It’s for younger and “seasoned” drivers, and even for those with smaller budgets. Several get there by trailering their $10,000 - $30,000 race car behind their pickup truck, and they often beat those who show up with their semi-trailers and race teams. It’s about fair competition, safe driving, and camaraderie.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We had so much fun at the Pueblo DE in May that we’ve decided to do it again this fall. Pueblo Motorsports Park is one of our favorite tracks, and the weather should be beautiful! Located near Lake Pueblo just west of I-25, the 2.2 mile10-turn track has some fun elevation changes and a terrific “flow”. We’ve arranged for paid corner workers giving instructors more time to work with their students as well as allowing our more experienced drivers to kick back and relax between run sessions.

If you’re NEW to HPDEs, you will be assigned an instructor to teach the basics and will get plenty of seat time to practice what you’ve learned. You’ll be in a run group with your peers, so you won’t be running in the same group as the more experienced drivers. In addition, novices will be taught the basics of driving on a track during Ground School held before each of their track sessions.

Mandatory drivers meeting 8:00AM Sharp.Beer:30 will commence after the last group is finished and the track goes cold.

It was Thursday morning, July 26, 2018 and we arrived at Mike Ward Maserati around 07:00 to sign the waiv-er for this 4-day driving tour. The air was cool as the morning sun was breaking through the clouds. It had poured rain in some parts of town that caused some street flooding. We gathered around as we always do to have our driver’s meeting. We split into three groups of nine cars each. Mark Taylor led the first group...and took off promptly. Vicki Cox-Jones led the second group and I led the third group.

While on C-470 headed to Hwy 285, we had a Colora-do Highway Patrol passing Vicki’s and my groups! He gave a thumbs up as he passed! I bet he thought it was odd to be passing 18 Porsches in the slow lane. We continued on making our way through the morning traffic and on to our first stop not too far out of town near Bailey. Now, we made it out of town, had our “bio break”, so let’s get some miles under our belts!

We had a total of 27 cars with the usual 911s, Cay-mans and Boxsters mix, and we also had four Macans and one 356. That is right, a 1959 356 Convertible D named “Alfred” joined us and hung with the “big boys.” Lilly Pray and Deb Pollack (who flew out from the Los Angeles area to join Lilly) guided Alfred on this big journey. Only once did they have to put the top up for driving and that was short-lived. They pushed through a couple of mild rain storms we encountered with smiles on their faces! Why you ask? Because this is what these gals love to do. They love adventure and driving. A little rain never hurt anything!

We traveled on many Colorado Highways through var-ious terrains that this great state has to offer.

We drove 425 miles the first day. We had one cou-ple from the Alpine Mountain Region (AMR), our sister region, Bill Perry and Amilu Stewart, have a little me-chanical issue a little over an hour away from our first overnight destination. They were able to get a tow to our hotel, and thankfully for one of our Macan driv-ers, Rick Seiferth, Rick volunteered to drive the cou-ple to the hotel. It was much appreciated. Thankfully they decided to have their P-car hauled to Colorado Springs, and they continued on with the group in a rental car.

As we continued on our journey the next day, we had a great stop for lunch in Ouray, CO. We were treated to a flyover by four F-16s (I believe that is what they were!). About three hours after lunch, we stopped at the Gateway Auto Museum. What an amazing collec-tion of cars! Sorry folks, no Porsches. But well worth the visit if you haven’t been. Afterwards, we headed down the road to Palisade, CO to stay the night at the Wine Country Inn. They were kind enough to allow a wash station on-site sponsored by Adam’s Polishes.

The next day we had a short optional drive before lunch through Colorado National Monument. Another beautiful place to check out. After lunch, we boarded a couple of buses and did a winery tour! The group on my bus were go-getters! And we stopped at six wineries and one peach and veggie farm. The oth-er group had a more laissez-faire attitude and spent most of their time at one winery enjoying sitting out-side under the trees. After the tours, it was banquet time! We had two couples from the Western Slope join us for dinner. We had a great dinner and great conversation. During desert, we had giveaways from Adam’s Polishes! We had nine lucky winners!

The start of our final and fourth day began after a re-laxed breakfast. We drove on more great roads to stop at Delicious Orchards in Hotchkiss, CO. If you were there, did you take a spin on the rope swing? I know Vicki Cox-Jones and I did!

We continued on and had lunch at the Redstone Inn. This was a really neat and historic place! We con-tinued on to Carbondale. Some members got a little dizzy at the roundabout but eventually made their way to the gas station! After a brief pit stop, the group con-tinued on their journey which included a stopover at Independence Pass for a great photo op. The final leg was to Frisco, CO where the group departed to head home on their own.

This was another great event that was well planned, and we owe all the thanks to Mark Taylor! He is our tour master! I also want to thank our sponsor, Adam’s Polishes, our three tour leaders, our three sweeps, and our rescue driver, Rick Seiferth. And, of course, thanks to everyone for making this a really fun trip!

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

LISTICLES FOREVERYou know them. You see them

everywhere. Those lists of everything from the top five food destinations in the US if you’re into no-cal vegan French street cuisine to the ten best deals on homes in the 90210 area code that are painted red and have excellent street appeal. They’re called “listicles.”

Here’s what Wikipedia says: “In journalism and blogging, a listicle is a short-form of writing that uses a list as its thematic structure, but is fleshed out with sufficient copy to be published as an article. The word is a portmanteau derived from list and article.”

According to Wired magazine, we need to get used to it. They ran an article a few years ago titled “5 Reasons Listicles are Here To Stay, And Why That’s Ok.” Get the irony? Anyway, here they are:

• Lists curate.• Lists give us additional ways to

interact with information• Lists are jumping-on points• Lists are ethically neutral• Lists are not giving you ADHD.

Yeah well, ok. But I can’t help thinking the whole activity is a bit inane. I mean, at the end of the story in Wired is an actual listing of other stories in which the reader might be interested, including “Discover the six 2018 luxury cars so cool its awesome. They cost under $50K!”

That’s verbatim, friends. Don’t blame me for the awkward and incorrect grammar.

Not that anybody seems to care. If they did, tweeting wouldn’t exist today either. But I digress….

Sorry, I just checked my e-mail in-box. And, lo and behold, out of six new entries since I began writing this dribble, two are “10 lightweight jackets that are perfect for fall travel” and “Three perfect blazers you need now.”

Of course, I have no idea who actually wrote these things, or whether there’s even the remotest emphasis on objective authenticity. Does it matter? I think not.

Which is why I guess I’d better join in the fun. So here goes. The top nine reasons why, when it comes to Porsches, listicles are like eating empty calories. I’d do ten, but I ran out of space. Not that it really matters.

1. The top three road-going Porsches I wish I had enough money to buy when they were new because I still covet them and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to drive them, much less afford them.

The 904, the Carrera GT and the 918.

2. The top three Porsche race cars I wish I had seen in full-bore competition.

The 917/30, the 962 and the 919.

3. The two Porsches I wish the factory would make because they’d sell so many we’d be assured of a steady stream of sports cars for the rest of our lives.

A Porsche pickup truck. I mean, how difficult would it be to join the worldwide sales party by cutting and reconfiguring the Cayenne? And a Porsche Suburban-fighter. I can hardly imagine what the margin would be on these vehicles.

4. Three reasons why Porsche will never again build an affordable sports car.

They’re still smarting from the fallout they got when they built the 914 and people really called it a Volkswagen. If they did, how would they then market their used vehicles? Audi would scream and yell to VW management that they’re usurping the TT market.

5. The best products ever developed by Porsche Design.

T h e o r i g i n a l Po r s c h e T i t a n chronograph. The original collapsible sunglasses.

6. The three best Porsche posters ever to grace a garage wall.

The 993 Turbo photo with the caption, “Kills bugs fast.” The 54th Targa Florio photo showing Jo Siffert scattering race fans in a Gulf-Porsche 908-3. The 1000 Kilometer Nurburgring photo showing the Carrera 6 with all four wheels in the air.

7. Three reasons I’d pick a Porsche Turbo over an Audi R8 or a Lamborghini Huracan.

Resale value. Jump seats. A usable front trunk.

8. The weirdest factory colors for new Porsches, without customization.

Lava Orange. Chalk. Miami Blue. I’m not making this up.

9. The amount of horsepower which is too much for the street.

Ha-Ha. Trick question. You can never have too much power. And you can cite Mark Donahue for that.

I rest my case. Welcome to the new, new journalism. Listicles forever.

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

When I worked in the corporate world, I used to joke that “if my em-ployer didn’t dress me, I wouldn’t have any clothes.” Such was the case with the plethora of promotional merchan-dise that would be given to all of us in marketing and management roles. And living in the hometown of the largest employer in my state, there was noth-ing weird about wearing “the colors” around town on the weekend. Lots of others were in the same boat and thought nothing of it. Once I retired, the appearance of my closet transitioned to a normal mix of street clothing that was only branded on the tag inside the collar. But that only lasted until I got involved with PCA. Now, as a zone rep, I’ve got neat stuff from all the regions in the zone. And for whatever reason, I can’t resist checking that box in Mo-torsportregistration.com to buy that “Oktoberfestendlesssummerspringtrack-day917concoursTSD” special edition T-shirt. Combine that collection with items acquired at Treffen, Parade, and Rennsport Reunion, and the hat, shirt,

jacket, and sticker collection are once again transitioning my closet to look just like it did during my working years. And since I worked for a company whose name was comprised of “initials,” the only difference today is that the new initials all have “PCA” in them.

However, unlike my working years, I don’t live in the hometown of a Porsche company (Atlanta or Stuttgart) or the PCA headquarters (Columbia, MD) where people on the street might understand my wardrobe. So wearing Porsche on my sleeve here in Utah (both literally and figuratively), would send the message to all my friends and neighbors that I’m nothing more than a car nerd. Though that assessment would be largely true, I choose not to initiate ANY conversations about my automotive passions when hanging out with non-PCA friends. The reason is a mix of not wanting to be seen as a one-dimensional person, and also choosing not to bore my friends. Nonetheless, there’s a strangely high level of curiosity among my non-PCA socia l circle,

particularly related to track days, HPDE instruction, zone travels, and providing advice on how they might price and sell their Prius. The result is that THEY brand me as the car geek, and I don’t even have to wear the advertising. So unless I’m at a PCA event, the clothes remain in the closet, and my “car lips” remain sealed.

As a result of trying to maintain a low profile locally, I’ve got lots of really cool, one-time event celebration outerwear that may eventually head to charity. After all, there’s just not that much lawn to mow, oil to change, or old metal to polish, to enable me to wear out all of those perfectly functional T-shirts. But I’m still waiting for the first time that I’m going to see an IRPCA Amazing Rally T-shirt on a “traffic light entrepreneur” offering to clean my windshield before the light turns green.

I suspect that I’m not alone, as I write this confession!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to fol low the inst ruct ions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course def ined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

A s DE event s a re not racing , nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an opportu-nity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s pro-gram. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically dif ferentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebra l Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
