    EECE542 Wireless Communications: Project #2

Communication System in Open-Access 700 MHz Frequency BandDue: Thursday, December 8, 2011 (presentation).

BackgroundIn 2007, there was a portion of the spectrum around 700 MHz that was

auctioned with the requirement of supporting open access. Details canbe found in the following links:

There is a requirement of open access for the licensees, which meansthat others can also use this spectrum on a secondary basis, either via re-licensing or via opportunistic spectrum access.

In this project, we will study such an opportunity and design acommunication system. We will think about a typical wireless

applications, and propose the physical-layer transmission system design,

including fading model, modulation, bandwidth efficiency/power

efficiency analysis, etc. We can do this following our course material fromChapter 2 to Chapter 10.

Objective:o Search on web for literature (articles, papers, books) on 700MHz band and

the related open access. Then, think of a typical wireless systemapplications in a typical environment. Based on this, propose your fading

model, such as large scale path loss and small scale fading model.

o Based on your fading model, define your transmission power,

    transmission distance, channel capacity.

o Propose your own modulation, and analyze its bandwidth efficiency and

    power efficiency.

o Discuss the application of advanced techniques, or what ever new

concepts you will have, such as advanced signal processing for

transmitters/receivers, using distant antennas connected by long wires,

using transceivers nearby in open space, etc.

    Participants:

o We follow the same team structure as the first project.

o Read the references, search for more relative literature. The more the

    better.

o Discuss your data and designs. Please finish all the items listed in

    Objective.

o Prepare power-point slides for presentation. Please address all the items

listed in the Objective section.o Presentations (about 20 minutes per group). Off-campus students just need

to send files to me, and do not need to physically present that.

    Time:

o Presentation is scheduled on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.

    Grading:

o Total score 10 points. Graded based on new literature founded, the

understanding of the material, the design of the communication

    framework, the preparation and presentation.
