CBS Tournament of Minds (TOM) team in Wellington.......next weekend

Just to show how well balanced we are (!) one of our TOM teams will be participating at the National TOM Competition to be held at Victoria University this weekend.

Our team of Arlo Feeney, Lauren O’Loughlin, Catherine Chen, Johnny Li, Jamie Maunder, Pablo Morles and Rory Mulchay will be working in the Social Sciences challenge category.

This is the team that won the TOM Regional Tournament of Minds Shield held at Albany Junior High, as reported in the newsletter last week.

APPA Choir Rehearsals at CBS Last week CBS hosted all schools who will be participating in the APPA Music Festival on Wednesday 15 November in the Auckland Town Hall.

The sounds emanating from our school hall were wonderful and bode well for a great evening of entertaining in the Town Hall.

Parents and supporters of CBS students involved in this performance are reminded that tickets often sell out for this event so if you are planning on attending it would pay to book now.

If you missed out on purchasing tickets through the school, tickets will soon be available through Ticketmaster.

Mumps Information We recently received the following information from our DHB. Whilst we have not been notified of any cases at Campbells Bay School we wish to be proactive in getting the message to our school community.

Auckland is experiencing an unprecedented mumps outbreak. There have been over 370 cases with more than 60 schools affected this year. Schools have had to exclude students and staff with mumps and any close contacts who haven’t been fully immunised with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

This has disrupted schools, the students’ learning and parents who have had to take time off work. Mumps can have serious complications requiring hospitalisation.

We suggest parents check their children have had two doses of the MMR vaccine. This will also protect students from the contagious measles and rubella viruses as well.

WELCOME

New Zealand Elections 2017 - Kids Voting Earlier in the year, team 5 and 6 inquired into rules and laws for our Respect Inquiry. On Friday we put that learning into practice as we participated in the 2017 Kids Voting Programme with the Electoral Commission.

Last week all year 5 and 6 students entered the voting booth and placed their two votes for parties in our North Shore electorate.

The learning leading up to voting around democracy, parliament and policies has been so valuable and the students have had great fun!

Our voting data has now been sent back to the Electoratal Commission and we will later receive information back to see if our opinions align with other children around New Zealand, and from the official 2017 elections.

Police Vetting: Urgent & Important!

Only adults who have had a police vet will be able to help with school activities from January 2017 onwards.

Please go to the school website to ‘Police Vetting for Volunteers at CBS’ under Parent Information and complete the form and attach photocopies as per the instructions.

Please note a police vet remains current for three years after the date of issue by the police.

Bake Sale

SUPPORTING THE PENGUIN LADY AND THE CAMPBELLS BAY BLUE PENGUINS

A big THANK YOU to all the parents who brought in such fabulous baking for the bake sale last week. It was a huge success.

We raised $781.00 to donate to Sylvia Durrant “The Bird Lady” and her friend Annewynn “The Penguin Lady”.

This money will be presented to Sylvia and Annewynn in recognition of their great work looking after sick and injured birds.

The Bird Lady and the Penguin Lady can be found daily at Campbells Bay beach taking their penguins for a swim.

The Bird Lady looks after 4,000 birds a year and relies on donations to keep going. The bake sale was a wonderful way for our Campbells Bay School kids to show their support.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Tēnā koutou katoa!

Last week was Te Wiki o te Reo Māori across Aotearoa. A number of events were organised to celebrate and promote te reo me tīkanga Māori (Māori language and culture) at Campbells Bay School, including weaving, string games, a kapa haka performance, rakau stick games and poi making.

We also used te wiki o te reo Māori to launch the new school pepeha. Our school pepeha has been created in conjunction with our Māori language and culture instructor, Whaea Lani, and helps us represent Campbells Bay School’s unique place in Aotearoa. A pepeha is a way of introducing oneself. Using a set structure it identifies who we are, where we’re from and where we belong. In a Māori context standing and sharing our pepeha is common practice. When it’s appropriate, especially at the start of a hui or gathering where we don’t all know each other, a pepeha is great way to make links and connect with others. Discovering who we are and where we’re from is an important part of building our sense of identity and belonging.

Campbells Bay School Pepeha

Ko Te Raki Paewhenua te motu.

Ko Rangitoto te maunga.

Ko Tikapa Moana te moana.

Ko Ngati Whatua te mana whenua.

Ko Campbells Bay toku kura tuatahi.

The area is the North Shore.

Rangitoto is the mountain.

Hauraki Gulf is the sea.

Ngati Whatua are the local iwi.

Campbells Bay is my primary school.

NUMBER 31

18 September 2017

Monday 27 November to Friday 1 December.

Book Week 2017 is happy to be welcoming back Jenny Bates, Author / Illustrator, Naturopath and Nutritionist.

From Jenny’s passion for teaching others about healthy foods and her artistic flair, her book ‘Green leafies make me bounce’ was born.

It is a colourful interactive rhyming book for pre-schoolers and children in the first years of school. It teaches them about healthy foods in a fun way so they associate them with play and learning.

Our students loved Jenny’s involved presentation last year, and came away with all sorts of knowledge on foods as well as the in’s and out’s of the production of her book and its illustrations; we can’t wait for another group of our students to be able to sit and learn with Jenny this year!

At the 2016 NZ Book Awards for Children and young adults Kat Merewether took out the Children’s Choice Te Reo Maori Award for the te reo version of her first book Kuwi’s First Egg, as well as reaching Number 3 in the overall Bestseller category for Children & Teens.

We are lucky to have Kat as part of CBS’s 2017 Book Week!

Kat’s picture book illustration work is her passion and she has illustrated more than twenty children’s books so far.

Each spread can take between 20 and 30 hours to complete, sketched first by hand, scanned and then coloured using a Wacom Intous tablet and Photoshop.

Hailing from Te Awamutu and retaining an authority on all things about little people, having three daughters of her own, Kat takes a lot of inspiration from her children.

‘‘Kuwi’s First Egg is about new beginnings and learning as you go… not everything’s perfect but in the end you’ll get there.’’

She says teaching children about conservation and kiwis is also an important part of her stories.

‘‘I figured the best way to do this is to make them fall in love with fiction.’’

Check out Kat’s great website http://www.kuwibooks.com/

Kat has also collaborated with Chris Sander’s - another of our Book Week Guests, and illustrated his first book Angel Star. You can see a timelapse to part of the AngelStar song here: http://www.angelstarbook.com/kat-merewether-illustrator-kuwi-the-kiwi/
