Comets

• A comet is like a big dirty snowball made out of water, dust and many different gases.

• A comet can travel up to 100,000 m.p.h.

• You can see an asteroid without a telescope every three years.

Parts of a Comet

• The three parts of a comet are the nucleus, the coma, and the ion tail.

• The tail of the comet always points away from the sun this is because of the strong solar winds.

Halley’s Comet

• This comet is called Halley’s comet because it was discovered by Sir Edmund Halley.

• You can see Halley’s comet every 76 years.

• The tail of Halley’s comet is 93 million miles long.

Asteroids

• Asteroids are small solid objects that orbit the Sun.

• They are sometimes called minor planets.

• The Asteroid Belt located between Mars and Jupiter is made up of 5,000 asteroids.

Temperature

• The average daytime temperature on an asteroid is 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

• The average nighttime temperature on an asteroid is –238 degrees Fahrenheit.

Composition

• Most asteroids are made out of carbon but, some are made out of other materials like silicate, metallic, and dark ice.

Interesting Facts

• Asteroids have large craters on them.

• The really big asteroids have moons.

• In 1908 a fireball exploded into Siberia destroying an ancient forest and killing a herd of reindeer.

Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites

• Meteoroids are small pieces of dust and rock that are found in space.

• Meteors are meteoroids that reach the atmosphere.

• Meteorites are meteors that reach Earth.

Meteor Showers

• A meteor shower is when many meteors fall from the atmosphere on to Earth.

• The average meteor in a meteor shower is about the size of a grain of sand.

The Difference

• This is the difference between asteroids and comets.

• They have many differences but, some they are also alike in some ways.

Life

• I don’t think people could live on a comet right now but, I think we would be able to in the future because of our major advancements in technology.
