Learning through play
What Can Play Really Do?
• Develops social and emotional skills.
• Promotes the development of fine and gross motor skills.
• Builds cognitive development.
How can play build social and emotional skills in children?
Playing with other children helps build children’s social skills by learning to share, co-exist in the same space, learning to take turns, builds independents, and self esteem.
Sharing
Children playing learn to share toys and materials that are available. This allows children to learn that other’s have feelings and expectations just like they do. It also helps promote rules of society.
Learning To Take Turns
Learning to take turns is an important part in life. It shows that you respect and value others. It promotes good citizenship. This is a skill that is learned through playing with others.

Play teaches children how to figure things out for themselves.
Builds Self-Esteem
• Play builds a child’s self-esteem which
builds confidence to succeed in life's
endeavors.
Gross Motor Development• Rough and
tumble play is a very important form of gross motor play. Gross motor play develops the larger muscles on the child’s body.
Develops Fine Motor Skills• Drawing is an
important skill to encourage based on the link to success in further formal education. Learning skills like Pasting objects, Matching simple objects, Buttoning a shirt, building with blocks, Zipping a zipper, Controlling crayons and markers, Cutting simple shapes,Completing simple puzzles, and copying simple shapes all promote math skills.
Promotes Math Skills
• A child learns about depth, width, height, length, measurement, volume, area, classification, shape, symmetry, mapping, equality (same as), and inequality (more than, less than) all from play.
Promotes Science Cognitive Skills
• Early childhood science promotes skills such as observations, exploration, investigating, prediction, experimentation. It allows a child to think, ask questions, and look for answers.
