Christ with us, Christ before us, Christ behind us.

We remember how you loved us, till your death and now we celebrate for you are with us here. And we believe that we will see you, when you come, in your glory, Lord.

We Remember, we Celebrate, we Believe. Our memory, the ability to call to mind specific events from years past, is a remarkable gift. This capacity enables us to recall the people and events that have shaped our lives; it may be a traditional family gathering, a remarkable teacher, an amazing moment or an exceptional accomplishment. There are, of course, other moments, perhaps ones that embarrass us or sadden us, that we would much rather forget. I am also aware that there are some among us who may have “senior moments” when our memory is not as sharp as it once may have been; as well as those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease which attacks the brain, causing problems with their memory. Yet, no matter how good our memory may be today, when we reflect upon this gift of memory we can’t help but be grateful.

Today, as we celebrate the Feast of Holy Souls, we use that gift of memory and invoke the Lord’s love and mercy for those loved ones who have gone before us in faith. We remember moments of joy, of hope and of faith; of shared moments of quiet and of celebration. We call upon the God of love to strengthen our faith and to gather our loved ones who have died to Himself. We recall the gift of eternal life offered to us through Jesus Christ.

The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. "If we had no care for the dead," Augustine noted, "we would not be in the habit of praying for them." Yet pre-Christian Rites for the deceased kept such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that the church did not commemorate the dead until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an annual day of prayer for their departed members.

In the middle of the 11th century, St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny (France), decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church.

So today, let us join with the whole church in our prayer for all of the deceased, that they may enjoy the peace of His Kingdom.

Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in

peace. Father Redcay

LOVE IS OUR MISSION

THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE

Prayer of John Henry Cardinal Newman

God has created me to do Him some definite

service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.

I have my Mission; I may never know it in this life,

but I shall be told it in the next.

I am a link in a chain,

a bond of connection between persons.

He has not created me for naught.

I shall do good; I shall do His work;

I shall be an angel of peace,

A preacher of truth in my own place,

while not intending it,

If I do but keep His commandments.

WE ARE CREATED FOR A MISSIONOF LOVE!

God works through us. We have a mission. We are in the world for a purpose – to receive God’s love

and show God’s love to others. God seeks to heal a broken universe. He asks us to be his witnesses

and helpers in that work.
