Managing their own schedule, schoolwork, and acvies now will help them feel capable and give them pracce for the future. Here are some strategies to try: Hand over tasks. Pick roune jobs that your tween can take full responsibility for. They could pack their lunch, change and wash their sheets and towels, and replace light bulbs when they burn out, for instance. You might need to remind them of the new dues at first, but gradually they should be able to do them without being asked. Tip: For more ideas talk to parents of older children about tasks they gave out at different ages. Encourage planning. Thinking ahead will help your middle schooler stay on top of his/her responsibilies. Talk about how they can do this. For example, if she’s going to a sleepover on Saturday, she’ll need to pack her overnight bag, return her library books that are due that day, and arrange to come home on me on Sunday to finish homework and get ready for school the next day. Avoid rescuing. This can be extremely hard! I know!! But...let your tween experience the consequences of being responsible from me to me. If they forget their project and they send a text message on the way to school, don’t deliver the assignment to them right away. They can bring it in the next day. Or if they can’t find their sports equipment because they didn't put it away, they will have to tell their coach. Turning the project in late or sing out from pracce may help them remember next me! -Middle Years Conrad’s Corner Dec. 1st *Oct./Nov. Kids of Character Luncheon Dec. 2nd WOW! Become More Responsible As your child gets older, they need to take responsibility

for more areas of their life. Managing their own schedule,

schoolwork, and activities now will help them feel capable

and give them practice for the future. Here are some

strategies to try:

Hand over tasks. Pick routine jobs that your tween can

take full responsibility for. They could pack their lunch, change and wash their

sheets and towels, and replace light bulbs when they burn out, for instance.

You might need to remind them of the new duties at first, but gradually they

should be able to do them without being asked. Tip: For more ideas talk to

parents of older children about tasks they gave out at different ages.

Encourage planning. Thinking ahead will help your middle schooler stay on

top of his/her responsibilities. Talk about how they can do this. For example, if

she’s going to a sleepover on Saturday, she’ll need to pack her overnight bag,

return her library books that are due that day, and arrange to come home on

time on Sunday to finish homework and get ready for school the next day.

Avoid rescuing. This can be extremely hard! I know!!

But...let your tween experience the consequences of

being responsible from time to time. If they forget their

project and they send a text message on the way to

school, don’t deliver the assignment to them right away.

They can bring it in the next day. Or if they can’t find

their sports equipment because they didn't put it away,

they will have to tell their coach. Turning the project in

late or sitting out from practice may help them remember next time!
