Call to Discern Religious Life Houston Catholic Women’s Conference -

Building a Eucharistic Home April 6, 2019

The 2019 Houston Catholic Women’s Conference was held on April 6, 2019 at Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church, and the theme this year was “Building a Eucharistic Home!”

The women in the top left photo attended as part of the St Theresa group, sat together and ate together to get to know each other and process the day. Patty Schneier, (wearing the green sweater) from St. Louis, was a guest speaker. Their mission is simple: To offer a one day conference for any woman who wishes to attend in order to show, teach, and highlight the awesome magnificence and beauty of the Catholic faith. Our hope is that each participant will come away ready to love Jesus, His Holy Mother, and the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church more actively and deeply. We encourage women to learn about their faith and become evangelists in their homes, communities, and parishes.

Program Meeting April 24, 2019

Kate Mims

Kate Mims is the CEO at Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center. Her presentation brought tears to everyone in the room. The love for her late husband is still strong in her heart. Kate and her late husband, Deacon Mike Mims, arrived in Houston in 1997 by way of California and then Australia where they lived for six years. Kate was an education (and volleyball) Major at Cal State Fullerton. In 1984 she married her husband, Deacon Mike, who passed away in January 2015 in a tragic accident. She has four sons (three by birth and one by covenant) and nine beautiful grandchildren. Kate studied alongside her husband at St. Mary’s Seminary for four years culminating in his ordination to the diaconate in 2007. Having been blessed with this amazing education, Kate strives to share it with others around her. Kate is absolutely certain that what Socrates said about the world is true concerning her Catholic faith, “The more you learn the less you know.”

Four Week Spiritual Lenten Series Presented by Serra International

Each week the beautiful Lenten series began with an opening prayer, scripture reading, time for reflection, Introduction, Documentary Tradition, discussion questions and closing prayer. Here is a short synopsis of each weeks’ session:

Week #1: March 13, 2019, Wednesday: Fr. Jojo Cal-Ortiz: Session Ash Wednesday / Lent: Lent is a period of the instruction of the catechumens and a period of reflection for the baptized as well. Lent is a journey of faith during the time from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. The themes hold this six-week season together: The mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection, the implications of this mystery for those preparing for baptism and a spiritual renewal of faith and conversion for those already baptized.

Week #2: March 20, 2019, Wednesday: Fr. Jojo Cal-Ortiz: Celebrating the 3rd Millennium-Reconciliation through Community: To experience reconciliation reminds us of God’s mercy and helps us to experience divine forgiveness by being reconnected with others. The church founded by Christ, for the salvation of all, is a model society. Our parish community fills the gap in our experience of being disconnected, by embracing the spirit of reconciliation with God and one another.

Four Week Spiritual Lenten Series Presented by Serra International

Week #3: March 29th, 2019, Friday: Fr. Innocent Okhifo: The Apostle to the Apostles: Jesus proclaimed the reign of God with his twelve disciples, and as he taught and healed throughout the land, many women became part of his traveling group. Mary Magdalene was one of the many healed and most likely part of his group. Some feel Mary Magdalene could be considered to be an Apostle depending on the criteria for apostleship. An apostle is a person who has accompanied Jesus during his earthly ministry and someone who has become a witness to his resurrection.

Week #4: April 7, 2019, Sunday: Fr. Innocent Okhifo: “In His Steps—A program of Renewal and Commitment”: Pope John Paul II’s request in 1989 and Vatican Cardinal Pio Laghi challenge in 1992 to Serra International to be the “lay arm of the church for Vocations” not just by words but by action. Serrans plant the seeds

that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further developments. Archbishop Romero’s words describe the ministry and mystery of Serra so well. No one can read or hear these words without realizing Serran prayers and Serran programs are instruments designed to permit the Holy Spirit “to enter and do the rest”. Thank you Father Jojo and Father Innocent for giving of your time and leading the Serrans on a beautiful Lenten journey! May God bless you!
