OCTOBER 2017

FROM THE PASTOR

The grace and peace of the living Christ is certainly with us.

Ahh, fall... except it's been 80-90 degrees! It was more like fall at the end of August! Anyway, fall is the beginning of our church program year and it's time to get cracking.

Water Ministries, and Shoes for Appalachia have already been successful! What a surprise it

was last week when a group of three teenage boys were biking by and they stopped for water

from our cooler in front of the church. Unfortunately, the water was gone! One young man

said, "Dang, I was counting on water being here like it has been this summer." I immediately

ran into the house and got him some water. Please sign up in Case Hall to put a case of water

in the cooler out front. Fall is a great time for biking, running, and walking in our area. And

yes, we are being counted on! Dot Villano has already sent two boxes of shoes to our family in

Inez, Kentucky. April Moore was so thankful to receive our shoes and to distribute them to her

neighbors! The collections continue in Case Hall.

The Shack is a book by Willie Young that was made into a movie earlier this year. I just got a

copy of a 5-week study on the book/movie. On Wednesday, October 11 at 7PM, I'll show the

movie and then we'll do the study for the next 5 Wednesdays (ending a week before

Thanksgiving). Have you read the book yet? As always, the book is better, but the movie is also

very good! I'm glad I read the book before the movie so I could see how someone else

interpreted the book. While not all the directors' choices were not mine, I was still thrilled to

see someone else's imagination on this. There is some really great theology in this amazing

work. You won't be disappointed. If you'd like to just come for the movie, please do!

I’ve made arrangements with Dana and Sandy at Petals & Paws to have a Blessing of the

Pets there on Saturday, October 21 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Please bring your mostly-

controlled pets and tell your friends! Sandy has hinted that there will be free ice cream for

at least the dogs! There will definitely be pet treats and water. A pet blessing is a simple

service where each handler/pet comes forward to receive a prayer of thanksgiving and

wellness. I know this is the same day as our Holly Boutique luncheon, but there really was

no other weekend available this year. There is an adoption event the week before at Petal &

Paws, and adopters will be invited to return the next Saturday for a blessing. In any event,

this should be a blast, and please come if you're not working the Holly Boutique! Please

spread the word.

See you in church, in the community, and in the world,

Pastor Karen 203-213-0410 / [email protected]

SECRETARY’S CORNER

Here it is fall already! Where did the summer go!

That means things will start ramping up in the

church office so get those articles, dates, etc. to me

early so they will make it into the Messenger and

bulletin. Thank you.

FRIDAY NIGHT OUT DINNER

UPDATE

Dinner one hundred seventeen - one hundred twenty

three.

Here we go again! Another year of delicious

dinners. I would like to thank you for your loyal

support, and remind you to sign up on the sign up

sheets the two weeks before a dinner. You come

for many consecutive dinners and then just as I

want to do, you take a vacation and I don't know till

the last minute you will be away. Most dinners I

have only a skeleton crew signed up and then most

of you just show up (thank God)!!! There's no

committee, no meetings, but PLEASE SIGN UP.

Desserts are getting harder to get the twenty I need.

Many of our bakers are not able to bake anymore.

If you have never done it, it's easy. Betty or

Duncan are a good start. Things with chocolate and

whip cream are popular. Pie is a big hit, and Marie

Callendar makes a perfect crust. Cupcakes and

brownies don't hold a candle to cake and pie. If you

would like to try let me know.

I am getting the year of dinners lined up. We need

7. October will be a week late due to the Holly

Boutique. I am open to new chefs and new ideas

for meals. I hope you're all onboard for year 12.

Where did the time go?

Diane Yekel

FOOD BANK UPDATE

As of September 21, we have delivered 78 bags to

the Food Bank. The children are back in school and

some families are struggling to meet family

obligations. Keep up the good work by adding to

the Canton Food Bank. Thank you!

NEWS FROM THE MEMORIAL

GARDEN CHAIRMAN

I have resigned as chairman of the Memorial

Garden. It just got to be too much. I am pleased to

announce that Ron and Deb Parker will take over as

co-chairpersons. I will still work in the garden and

other flower beds around the church. A weed

anywhere is a weed that needs to be pulled.

I would like to thank the original Memorial

Committee and all those that joined along the way.

I would like to thank the Friends of the Memorial

Garden. They were never on the committee but

showed up and supported whatever work I wanted

to get done. I also want to thank the Angels for all

their efforts in our major projects.
