WE ARE THE HEART, HANDS, AND FEET OF JESUS IN THE HEART OF ORLANDO. November 2015 COME AND GIVE THANKS TOGETHER N ovember often turns our thoughts toward thankfulness. This Scripture from Paul’s letter to the Colossians, for me, epitomizes what that thankfulness is all about. Ironically, the Apostle Paul didn’t write these words with an eye to our national day of Thanksgiving, but the Spirit moved him to put these words down to help shape our lives in everyday thankfulness to the God who has given us all things. Some things that I’m thankful for as I think about our shared ministry at Prince of Peace: faithful hearts and willing servants, including volunteers who serve in our offices everyday; all those who are moved to serve Christ wherever they are—not only those who do so at Prince of Peace, but also those who view their personal ministry being in their own neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, places of recreation—any place where they may be; all who hold up our shared ministry at PoP/PdeP in their prayers; a faithful and supportive staff that is committed to sharing Christ in a world that is ever changing; and to that end, we rejoice with DCE Emily Moss and her husband, Chris, as they welcomed their baby boy to this world at the end of September. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:15-17) The list could go on and on and on. Personally, I sense God’s peace and the work of the Spirit just taking time to reflect on these things. Thankfulness—and a challenge to you: Would you continue to add to the list with those things God brings to mind for which you are thankful? As you do, I wish to challenge you to “let the peace of Christ rule in your heart”—to continue to allow God to work in you as you acknowledge His reign over your heart and mind; to allow the Lord to shape every area of your life—your thinking, your attitude, your action, your words— through the message of Christ; to prayerfully seek God as He directs you, so He would move you in a way so that “whatever you do, whether in word or deed, [you would] do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Let us give thanks together in Christ!

COME AND GIVE THANKS TOGETHER

November often turns our thoughts toward thankfulness. This Scripture from Paul’s letter to the Colossians, for me, epitomizes what

that thankfulness is all about. Ironically, the Apostle Paul didn’t write these words with an eye to our national day of Thanksgiving, but the Spirit moved him to put these words down to help shape our lives in everyday thankfulness to the God who has given us all things.Some things that I’m thankful for as I think about our shared ministry at Prince of Peace:• faithful hearts and willing servants, including

volunteers who serve in our offices everyday;• all those who are moved to serve Christ wherever

they are—not only those who do so at Prince of Peace, but also those who view their personal ministry being in their own neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, places of recreation—any place where they may be;

• all who hold up our shared ministry at PoP/PdeP in their prayers;

• a faithful and supportive staff that is committed to sharing Christ in a world that is ever changing; and to that end, we rejoice with DCE Emily Moss and her husband, Chris, as they welcomed their baby boy to this world at the end of September.

(Colossians 3:15-17)

Lutheran Women in Mission thank all of you who supported the mite collection last month.  We sent $440 to the LWML FL/GA District and national for mission grants.  Our best collection ever! Very generous people at PoP!  One of our national mission grants is providing $80,000 for disaster response trailers so the Lutheran Early Response Teams may provide a ministry of presence before, during, and after a disaster. We are gathering together on November 7 with other Lutheran churchwomen in Orlando at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Lake Mary to assemble personal hygiene kits.Our group will also be selling car magnets that read, “Put Christ in Christmas.” They are very attractive and sturdy.  More information will be coming in the bulletin.We are meeting this month on Wednesday, November 18, in the FLC.  Come join us.  We will be working on a project for Days for Girls in Malawi, Africa and hope to have a speaker, as well.  We will have our annual homemade cookie sale, as well as jars filled with soups or mixes in December.  Please consider supporting us, as all profit will go to missions.

The goal of LWR is to help communities around the world cope with and recover from emergencies with Personal Care Kits.LWML would like to invite you to donate NEW items for Personal Care Kits during November and December. LWML will assemble these kits in January and send them to Lutheran World Relief. In turn, Lutheran World Relief will ship the kits to needy people around the globe.Boxes will be in the church office, Narthex, and FLC for:• dark colored, lightweight bath towels• adult-size toothbrushes• sturdy combs• metal nail clippers• bath size (3 or 4oz)

Sending top quality items shows the greatest care and respect for the dignity of the recipient. LWR provides Quilts and Kits based on need, regardless of religious creed. Religious references may be misinterpreted by the governments of the receiving countries, jeopardizing the delivery to the people who need the items most.Please do not donate any items decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. LWR and our overseas partners have access to areas of the world others do not because we are impartial humanitarian organizations. NEW LCMS HISPANIC CONVENTION PRESIDENTThe Rev. Adolfo Borges, associate pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orlando, FL, is the new president of the LCMS Hispanic Convention – having been elected by the convention that met July 28-31 in Tampa, FL.Borges told Reporter that a prime goal for Hispanic Lutherans is to be “connected [for] sharing ideas and experiences.” He thanked the Synod that Hispanics “are being taken into account. …We want to work together as partners [and] make a contribution to the whole church.”

HELPING OTHERS—SPREADING HOPE(Your gift to the “Pastor’s DiscretionarY funD” can helP!)

Through the ministries of Prince of Peace people most certainly experience “the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus—in the heart of Orlando.” One way in which people experience this hope in real and tangible ways is through the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.” This fund is the pipeline to provide assistance to individuals and families who come through our doors with acute, and sometimes critical, needs that are currently unmet in their lives. Helping these families and individuals in real, tangible ways gives us an avenue to demonstrate we care as we listen compassionately; opportunity to pray with those God leads to our door; and most importantly, occasion to share the Good News of the hope God gives us only through Christ.In the community we serve, the need is great, and the opportunities to demonstrate and speak of God’s love are limitless. Your special gift (that is, above and beyond your regular gifts and offerings) to the “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” can help meet the acute, critical needs of some, even as our staff comes alongside to help individuals and families discover resources and strategies that can guide them to greater independence in the long term.

NOVEMBER 2015

We have much to be thankful for as God’s people. But is this the only time of the year we think about being thankful? As Thanksgiving approaches, don’t we tend to suddenly become

more aware of our blessings that we have overlooked the rest of the year? Our good and gracious Lord has given us so much that we should always be thanking and praising Him for His immense and immeasurable goodness. Now, I’d like to say “thank you” for a few things in particular. First of all, “thank you,” to all who have wished Alyssa and me well on our upcoming marriage (November 14). As the day draws closer, we are feeling truly loved, blessed, and supported by so many people. Second, “thank you,” to all who have taken some extra time out of their busy schedules to be a part of the Festival of Lessons and Carols choir. I know things start getting very hectic this time of year for everyone, so dedicating a few more hours to ministry work is not always the first thing on our minds. So thanks for taking the time to do just that!… That being said, the choir could still use a few more voices—especially men! Don’t be scared to join in! We have some great vocalists in each section who will be glad to help you pick up the music and make a joyful noise!In His Service,

Austin Wessel

It’s that time again for PoP to show its love to our community through its children. Last year we had several children desiring bicycles – so if you are a ‘giver’ who shops in advance, it’s in your budget and it’s the right price, please purchase a bike and we will find a worthy home!

Please pick up an Angel from the tree the last week of November, purchase the item and return it for PoP volunteers to wrap.

LIFT HIGH THE CROSS

“Lift High the Cross” is a popular hymn written in 1887 by Anglican priest George Kitchin. Legend has it that Kitchin was inspired by the story of how Emperor Constantine saw a cross in the sky with the words in hoc signo vinces (in this sign conquer) at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 A.D – which he won. After this life-changing event, he became the first Christian Emperor of Rome and stopped the persecution of Christians. “Lift High the Cross” became popular in the United States, and in 1978 was included in The Lutheran Book of Worship. But we must ask the typical Lutheran question: “What does this mean”?When we think of the cross as a symbol of execution, it is a scandal. Paul tells the Corinthian Christians “... the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (I Corinthians 1:18). Scandal? Foolishness? Whenever orthodox Muslims capture Christian territory they first destroy all the crosses on the churches because the cross is a hated symbol and a threat. Also, Islamic theology teaches that when Jesus returns to earth he will “destroy all the crosses.” They have been destroyed here in America. For example, in 2013 the historic 127-year-old Church of St. John in St. Paul, Minnesota was turned into the Darul-Uloon Islamic Center. All the crosses came down. And in separate speeches in 2009 at Roman Catholic Notre Dame and Georgetown Universities, the White House demanded all crosses be hidden for President Obama’s speeches.But we agree with St. Paul that the cross is neither a scandal nor foolishness, but represents the power of God for salvation for all who believe. Messiah Jesus, Lord of the nations, loving Good Shepherd—voluntarily died on the cross of Calvary to accept judgment for the sins of the world. The cross is a symbol of life, hope and peace, and is actually the most incredible oxymoron ever. The cross also inspires us to lead a life (and sometimes death as we remember the many Christian martyrs of today) in imitation of Jesus. Sometimes people wear a cross merely as jewelry. But often it means that an individual has given his or her life to Christ. Recently my wife and I toured St. Simons Island, GA. We stopped in a small jewelry shop and we noticed the proprietor was wearing a cross, which emboldened us to pry a bit. The conversation led to faith-sharing and the owner said she gave 10% of all her profits to “Safe Harbor Children’s Center,” a local Brunswick, GA charity that helps children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected—or who are homeless and lacking food. Debra told us her vision was to convince local Christian businesses to give the profits of one day each week to the Safe Harbor Children’s Center. The cross, a symbol of death by execution, now symbolizes life to children in need. Our conversation started with a cross. We know that our salvation and eternal home were purchased for us on a cross. Will you wear a cross?Bruce Lieske for the Missions and Evangelism Team

How confused we must be in trying to make decisions in our lives,

our businesses, for our health and for our walk with God. Having attended the program, “Success That Matters,” I journeyed with other men to find balance in our lives, to be better disciples and to grow in Christ. The responses were well received. However, it is interesting to see that even though for those 8+ hours we were attentive, responsive and somewhat fulfilled, we continue to struggle, because we still depend on ourselves and not on the Lord. What is needed is God’s guidance; “The LORD says “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8) We are incapable of conducting Christian lives without the support and guidance provided by Christ, “You are my helper and my Savior.” (Psalm 40:17)Regardless of our health issues, life issues, business issues, discipleship issues, we are children of a gracious God. “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

THANKS LIVING

The Gospel of Luke tells the account of Jesus’ healing of 10 lepers. Leprosy—the worst disease of their time—attacked the body, resulting in missing fingers and toes and damaged limbs. In addition to physical pain, a leper was removed from his family and community; cutting off all relational ties with loved ones. The story in Luke 17 is unique in that the focus is less on the miracle and more on the response of those healed. Ten lepers encounter Jesus and beg him for healing. He tells them to go show themselves to the priests in order to be declared “clean.” Along the way, the lepers are healed—a lifetime of leprosy erased in an instant. Diseased flesh now restored, healthy and whole. Oh, the rejoicing and celebration that must have taken place. Ten are healed, but verse 15 indicates only one shows gratitude: “One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.  He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him.” His expression of gratitude is a lesson for all of us in ‘thanksliving’:Realize––Consciously reflect on how we have been blessed in our livesReturn––Be present with the source of our blessingRejoice––Be joyful about receiving any gift, large or smallThank––Express our gratitude‘Thanksliving’ is simply living out our gratitude to God. It’s recognizing the many things God has done for us and responding with thankfulness in the way we live: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”—Psalm 100:4While the busyness and distractions of life tempt us to follow the example of the nine who did not show gratitude, the example of one healed leper demonstrates how to orient our lives into a mindset of ‘thanksliving’.This article provided compliments of Thrivent Financial and Rick Ackerman, ChFC®, CLU®, RICP®, Financial Consultant. Generous people are attracted to the notion of giving twice. This can occur when a Christian steward structures an estate and financial plan that gives first to people they love and then to ministries they care about. It doesn’t have to be an either or proposition. Family and ministry both benefit when you discover effective ways to provide for your loved ones and the Lord’s Work – such a plan multiplies the impact of your gifts.Putting one’s affairs in order can be a daunting task. There are important issues to know. “Should I give lump sums? Income benefits? Or both?” “How much control should I retain on the management of estate gifts?” “Do I need a will or revocable living trust?” “How do I know that my beneficiary designations are effectively structured for cost and tax conservation?” “What about durable powers of attorney?” “Why might I want to take a closer look at tools freely available to me—charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities or donor advised funds?”These and other questions can be explored in a confidential and trustworthy way as you discover your own “Lifetime Plan for Giving.” If you are including your congregation or other LCMS ministries in your plan, learn options to protect your intended purposes,

claim tax benefits and increase the impact of your generosity. Start by asking God’s will for how He would have you structure your lifetime plan to bless your God-given family and further His earthly work. Share your faith as a part of your estate plan. Discover what tools and techniques are right for you as you look at material facts with spiritual stewardship eyes. Create a “Lifetime Plan for Giving” that blesses family and ministry. testimonY

My husband and I have recently completed our charitable gift planning, setting up our wills, power of attorney, and health surrogate with the help of our LCMS Foundation Representative, Robin Paris.This is something we have wanted to do for at least a couple of years and dreaded doing it because we didn’t know where to start. Robin walked us through the process and explained everything in a way we both understood. The process was so easy and done in such a way that it was far easier than we could have imagined. The lawyer recommended to us was able to

complete all the paperwork in one visit. The peace of mind we are experiencing having this all taken care of for our children is hard to describe. The best gift you can give your children is having all this taken care of before your death.Our belief has always been that all we have belongs to the Lord and we are stewards of what is His. To be able to have a say in how our resources can further His kingdom, after our passing, is what we feel He would want us to do as good stewards. I would encourage all of you to take the time to go through this process as a gift to your heirs. They will be dealing with so many emotions at your passing; and not having to deal with estate taxes, decisions about how to handle your affairs is your final act of love.—Marleen Schmidt

Please join us as we Celebrate the

blessings god has bestowed on us

bring a faVorite dish to share!

Let’s deck the halls of Prince of Peace for the Advent and Christmas season on Saturday, November 28 beginning at 8am. With ample volunteers, we can be finished around noon. Coffee and donuts will be provided.As the Christmas season begins, this is an extra special time to share God’s grace and love with our community. Let’s make our campus look especially beautiful as we invite new people through our doors.This year we will be doing an all-new setup in the Family Life Center, so some extra hands would be wonderful. Tasks include setting up multiple trees around campus, hanging garland and wreathes, stringing lights, placing ornaments and Chrismons, and more. If you’re free, willing, and able, please join the crew to help Prince of Peace look like Christmas!

Fall is one of my favorite seasons! I love the cooler days, crisper nights and the fall scents of cinnamon and pumpkin pie! It is a time of year

for get-togethers with family and friends as well as a time to reflect on all the wonderful blessings God has given us.It’s very easy to ask God for something we want to have rather than thanking Him for what He has given us. Is it possible to become so self-centered that we forget to tell God “Thank you”?I have a very simple way for your family to focus on giving thanks to our Lord.Give each family member a thank you card or nice piece of stationery. Have them write out a thank you note to God (younger children can draw pictures). It could be a thank you for something you haven’t yet thanked God for, or even something you hadn’t even thought about thanking Him for. After everyone has written their thank you, take turns reading them aloud. Wait a few moments between each thank you to reflect on what each person has written. You’ll be surprised at the things we take for granted that we should be thankful for!Enjoy your fall season with all of your friends and family! Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!In His Name,

Kathy Hudson
