Welcome to the Essex Record OfficeThe Essex Record Office (ERO) collects and preserves the written, oral and visual heritage of the county, ensuring that it remains available to both present and future generations. This unique collection of records, based in Chelmsford, tells the story of a thousand years of Essex’s history and can help you to discover the history of your family, home, village or town.

During a visit to the Record Office you can access documents, maps, photographs, diaries, accounts, letters, deeds, sound recordings and video. We hold the parish records for the Diocese of Chelmsford, which are particularly useful for family historians. Additionally, there is an extensive reference library of books about Essex’s history.

It is free to visit the Record Office. You do not need to make an appointment but you will need a County Archive Research Network (CARN) reader’s ticket if you want to look at original documents. Readers’ tickets are issued free of charge, but you must bring some form of identification that includes both your address and signature to obtain one.

Our friendly, expert staff members are always pleased to advise you on how to begin to use the Record Office. We have a range of leaflets which will help you to understand more about how to use the Record Office, our collections, and some kinds of research. These are available free of charge. There is also a secure locker room for the storage of bags, which are not permitted in the Searchroom.

Essex through the ages: tracing the past using manorial documents

Find out how you can discover centuries of Essex life using manorial records. Manorial documents include many thousands of fascinating records, dating from the 1300s to the 1900s. The ERO has been taking part in a major update of the Manorial Documents Register (MDR), which is kept by The National Archives, to make these records easier for researchers to find, and this special event marks the conclusion of our contribution to the project.

Join us to find out about the background to manorial documents, and for inspiration on how you can use these records in your own research into your family, house or local history.

Black History Month: Essex history needs you

The Essex Record Office holds documents dating from the tenth century to the present day from a wide variety of sources, but we hold few documents relating to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities.

Essex has been settled by people from other lands throughout history and some of our documents record their presence, although rarely in the detail that we would like. We are inviting people from BAME communities to tell their stories, either by writing them down or making a sound or video recording, to be kept in the archive for current and future generations to share.

This will be an on-going project, but in order for contributors (or potential contributors) to see where their stories will be stored, we are holding a launch event with an opportunity to see behind-the-scenes at the archive, and to enjoy food, music and a display of documents.
