Alcohol Sensitivities: Homeopathic drops contain alcohol. If the patient is sensitive orallergic to alcohol, the dosage may be first placed in a teaspoon of warm (not hot) water. For Essences, the dosage may be added to 1 oz. of warm water. Wait for 5 minutes to allowsome of the alcohol to evaporate. This procedure will reduce the alcohol in the dose, although will not eliminate it entirely.

Persistent Pain or Condition: If pain or condition persists or worsens, it may be anindication that there is a more serious underlying condition. Consult a physician if symptomscontinue, worsen or recur for more than 7 days.

Homeopathic remedies are classified by the FDA as over-the-counter drugs. These remediesare not intended for the treatment of critical or life-threatening illness. Complex homeopathicsare formulated for the relief of common, self-limiting ailments and may be used in conjunctionwith other modes of medical therapy. Patients should be made aware that whilehomeopathics do not have side-effects such as those associated with synthetic drugs, a"proving" may occur. A homeopathic "proving" may occur within the first 72 hours of takingthe remedy. Provings are symptoms caused by the action of the homeopathic and aregenerally mild in appearance. Provings may be determined by discontinuing the dosage. Ifsymptoms do not lessen within 24 hours, it is not likely that they were caused by thehomeopathic. It is natural for modest symptoms to be exhibited during the healing andcleansing of the body, but when symptoms grow in intensity or persist for a prolonged lengthof time, other causes should be investigated.

INTRODUCTION

Complementary medicine is based on the idea that the human body, and allbiological entities, are self-regulating organisms and that, given a chance, arecapable of healing themselves. It used to be thought that the importantfunction of healing was orchestrated by the brain, spinal cord and thenervous system, but recent research indicates that communication within thebody is even more elaborate and involved than previously imagined.Networked throughout the body are elaborate mechanisms which maintain‘real-time,’ instantaneous communication with every single part of thephysical body. For example, the ‘fight-or-flight’ response results in everycell in the body responding instantly at the ready, or a single circulating cellthat mutates into a malignant cancer cell results in a cascade of cancer-cidalactivities instantly activating and migrating to the site of the threat toneutralize it in a matter of minutes. The body is a virtual concert ofperfectly orchestrated responses designed to maintain the homeostaticbalance of health, defying the natural laws of entropy and exhibiting amoment-to-moment awareness of the entire physical body at speeds whichexceed the physiochemical communication channels possible through thenervous system alone.

When this amazing mechanism breaks down, the the physician’s role is to help restore the

innate healing ability of the body withoutdoing additional harm. Homeopathy is a form

of natural medicine that complements the bodyperfectly, utilizing tiny doses of carefullyprepared substances which stimulate thebody’s natural healing abilities. The practice

of homeopathic medicine is based on 200 yearsof carefully executed, controlled scientific

experiments (also called provings) andintellectual reasoning, as opposed to thedogmatic ritual, questionable theory,unchallenged/untested techniques andreligious fervor that can typify some forms of‘alternative’ medicine.

As the definition of medicine expands, the variety of conditions thatphysicians and practitioners will be called upon to treat is increasingsignificantly. More and more patients, disillusioned with the cost and resultsof conventional medicine, are requesting more natural, less invasivealternatives. As a result, patients seeking treatment have often postponedtheir visit until their condition has become critical, and are often sufferingfrom a multitude of conditions. Additional medical tools or modalities maybe required to completely address this multi-afflicted patient. To assist with

this additional burden, homeopathy offers two centuries of proveneffectiveness that can be easily learned and applied without danger ofharming the patient or complicating their healing picture. Health is morethan just the sum of parts, or the complex interplay of physical, mental andchemical issues. It is clear that we are witnessing an expanding paradigm ofthe theoretical model which forms the basis for medical therapy.

In order to facilitate homeopathic practice, this manual focuses on complexrather than classical remedies. Classical homeopathy involves extensiveeducation and experience to discover the single correct remedy, and thenprescribes that single remedy at a single potency. Unfortunately, theclassical approach doesn’t lend itself well to most busy medical practices. For example, depending on the specific symptoms, the correct remedy for acommon cold might be Aconite, Allium cepa, Antimonium tartaricum,Arsenicum, Belladonna, Bryonia, Dulcamara, Euphrasia, Ferrumphosphoricum, Gelsemium, Hepar sulphur, Mercurious, Natrum muriaticum,Nux vomica or Pulsatilla, just to name a few. Selecting the correct remedydepends on completely identifying the symptom picture, which may takehours in an extensive classical intake interview. Not a realistic option inmost busy medical offices.

Homeopathy is a learned specialty, functioning as a tool to supplement anyconventional or complementary practice. Complex homeopathy combinesthe most frequently used remedies for a particular condition into a singleformula for ease of use and efficacy. Instead of spending time narrowingdown the type of cold a patient might be suffering from, as in our example, acomplex remedy containing most of the commonly used remedies for colds

is recommended. Homeopathic theory contends that the remedy contains allof the vibrational signatures of the original remedies, and that the biologicalintelligence of the body is astute enough to select the single correctfrequency that it needs to stimulate its own healing. Additionally, as thehealing picture changes, the different frequencies that become necessary arealready present in the complex remedy and are used as the body sees fit, rather than having to re-prescribe a new homeopathic remedy every few daysas the picture changes. As such, complex homeopathic remedies will bediscussed in this manual.

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine, and the ideal complement toother forms of medicine. It is especially helpful with disorders of unknownetiology, or when a diagnosis is vague or unclear. It is the overall symptompicture that determines the treatment, not the cause of the dysfunction, or thelabel or name that conventional medicine may apply to it. Often inconventional medicine, the treatment depends heavily on the correctdiagnosis. Homeopathy enjoys the luxury of being exempt from thoserequirements, requiring only a keen sense of observation and the desire toheal others on a deeper level. If an overall symptomatic picture can beidentified, a homeopathic can be used to assist with the condition. Eachpatient is unique. Homeopathy may not be appropriate in every case, but formost patients, it can greatly enhance their healing experience.

It is the intent of this manual to provide a concise, easy-to-use guide to using complexhomeopathic medicine. Complex homeopathy is better suited for busy practices, and offers anexcellent adjunct to any medical therapy. For those doctors inclined to investigate the classicalside of homeopathy, there are a number of fine books and classes available throughout the USand on-line that anyone can take advantage of to pursue homeopathic education further.

WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?

Homeopathic medicines are manufacturedand labeled according to the governingauthority of the United States Food andDrug Administration (FDA), and as suchare categorized as over-the-counter drugs(a few homeopathic remedies are classifiedas prescription drugs, but shall not bediscussed in this manual). Homeopathicremedies have been used with safety andefficacy for over 200 years. Homeopathy is one of the most commonlypracticed forms of health care in the world today. There are no artificialadditives or fillers. There are no dangerous side effects. It is simple to learnand use, and it stimulates the body to use its innate biological intelligence toheal itself without the use of invasive, possibly toxic intervention.

HOMEOPATHY is the

medical discipline of using

minute quantities of

specially prepared

substances to stimulate

the body to heal itself

In 1796, Samuel Hahnemann published Essay on New Curative Principle, atreatise in which he established the foundational principles of homeopathy.Homeopathy is a safe and effective system of natural medicine that uses tinyquantities of specially prepared substances to stimulate the body to healitself.

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843) was a German physician who waswell known for his work in chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology. In1789, he began a series of experiments. He discovered that, by ingestingPeruvian bark (cinchona), a healthy individual would develop a fever, nausea, diarrhea, limb pain, numbness and ringing in the ears – all symptomsof malaria. When the subject would stop ingesting the bark, the symptomswould disappear. Since Peruvian bark was commonly used to treat malaria,Hahnemann theorized that a substance which can create symptoms in ahealthy person can be used in smaller doses to cure those same symptoms inillness. This proved to be true and became one of the fundamental tenants ofhomeopathy: the Law of Similars (similia similibus curantur, or ‘likes arecured by likes’).

The word homeopathy is derived from the Greek words ‘homoios,’ whichmeans like or similar, and ‘pathos,’ which means suffering. Homeopathy, then, is a therapy based on similar suffering. This isn’t the first time inhistory that this philosophy of similars has been used. As early as 400 B.C.Hippocrates was prescribing hot spring baths for his patients with fever.Theoretical parallels also exist between the work of pioneers like Salk andJenner as they expose thebody to the very disease thatthey were trying to protectagainst (i.e. immunization).Even modern allergytreatments introduce smallamounts of an allergen intothe body in an attempt todesensitize the patient tothat same allergen.

Dr Hahnemann wasdisillusioned by the barbaricstate of medicine of his timeand the dangerous medicines that were commonly used. As he sought tohonor his physician’s oath to ‘do no harm,’ he began to experiment withincreasingly diluted solutions. He discovered that, through a process ofdilution and succussion (vigorous agitation), the therapeutic strength(potency) of a homeopathic medicine could be increased while virtually

eliminating toxic side effects. This became a unique and often confusingprinciple of homeopathy: the Law of Infinitesimal Dose, or minimal dose.

This created an apparent paradox - the more a solution is diluted, the lessactive ingredient it contains; how could a dilute solution be a more potenthealing agent than the concentrate? The chemical model of pharmacologicaltherapeutics was inadequate to explain this phenomenon. If one tests a high-potency homeopathic remedy for chemical constituents, alcohol and waterare the only molecular ingredients found (which are those of the solute).

It turns out that physics is best suited to explain the mechanics ofhomeopathy and the energetics behind its activity. Highly processedhomeopathics undergo a molecular change, and these subtle changes can beobserved with highly sensitive tests such as NMR (nuclear magneticresonance), Raman-laser spectroscopy and I.R. spectrophotometry whichanalyze molecular and submolecular geometry. It is now known thathomeopathic remedies emit distinct, measurable electromagnetic signals, andthat manufacturing alters the physical geometry of the water and alcoholsolute. Trevor Cook, PhD, DIHom, President of the United KingdomHomoeopathic Medical Association, suggests that it is possible that thespecific electromagnetic frequency of the original substance is imprinted intothe remedy through the energetic process of dilution and succussion.Research is now being done to better understand the mechanisms behindhomeopathic efficacy.

Dr. Hahnemann continuedhis experiments withdifferent substances. After administering thematerial to be tested, heand his associates wouldmeticulously record everysign and symptom that thesubjects experienced. These tests came to beknown as ‘provings,’ andthe collection ofsymptoms for eachsubstance formed thebasis for the MateriaMedica (materials ofmedicine). various physicians and organizations, and remain a vital component ofhomeopathic practices. A Repertory is another often-used book that crossreferences symptoms with their common remedies.

Hahnemann’s first complete text on homeopathy was published under thetitle, Organon of Rational Medical Science, in 1810. The 6th and finaledition was published posthumously in 1921. Despite opposition andpersecution from peers and the medical community, homeopathy spread

rapidly. When Dr. Hahnemann diedin 1843 homeopathy had spreadthroughout Europe, the United States,Mexico, Cuba and Russia.

The first US homeopathic medicalschool was established in Allentown,PA in 1835 by Constantine Hering, astudent of Hahnemann’s. In 1844, theAmerican Institute of Homeopathywas formed, and enjoyed thedistinction of being the first medicalassociation in the United States.Shortly thereafter (1846), theAmerican Medical Association(AMA) was founded. Because offundamental differences in theirtherapeutic approach to medicine, theAMA forbid their members topractice homeopathy, consult with oreven consort with homeopathicphysicians for any reason, underthreat of license suspension.

Despite intense pressure from theAMA, the popularity of homeopathycontinued to grow. This was due, atleast in part, to the efficacy displayedduring the cholera and yellow feverepidemics of the 1800’s. In Ohioduring the 1849 outbreak of cholera, only 3% of patients treatedhomeopathically died. The mortalityrate for those treated withconventional medicine was in excessof 60%. In London in 1854, choleraclaimed 53% of its victims in

conventional hospitals, whereas only 16% of those treated in homeopathichospitals died. In 1879, yellow fever patients in New Orleans experienced a5.6% mortality rate when treated by homeopathy; standard medical treatmentlost 16% of their patients. Insurance companies even offered discountedrates for their customers who had homeopathic physicians, because theirtreatment was proven so much more effective and inexpensive.

The first official homeopathic compendium, the HomeopathicPharmacopoeia of the United States, was published in 1897. By the turn ofthe century, 15% of the physicians in the US were homeopathic physicians, there were 29 homeopathic medical journals, 22 homeopathic medicalschools and 100 homeopathic hospitals in the US. Then in 1910, Americanhomeopathy was dealt an almost lethal blow with the issuance of the Flexnorreport. Commissioned and issued by the Carnegie Foundation, the Flexnorreport reviewed medical schools and established guidelines for schools thatwere to receive funding from charitable sources, such as the CarnegieFoundation. The evaluations and ratings were designed and weighted insuch a way as to specifically exclude homeopathic medical schools. As aresult, all but 2 homeopathic medical schools were either closed or convertedto allopathic medicine by 1923. Further complicating the matter, disagreements within the homeopathic community began to arise, and by1950, no homeopathic schools at all remained open in the United States.Fortunately homeopathy is now enjoying resurgence, not only in the US, buton a global scale. There is a growing consensus that the soaring expenses ofmedical care has not returned any significant improvement in the generallevel of health. Likewise, research is either highly specific, or increasinglydesigned to support the researchers, with minimal returns to the generalpublic. Health care is becoming a consumer-driven commodity, and theconsumer is demanding more natural, less harmful alternatives.Homeopathy is the answer.

COMBINATION VS CLASSICAL HOMEOPATHY

There are two different schools of thought in homeopathic circles; one isclassical homeopathy, the other is combination (sometimes called‘complex’) homeopathy. After 200 years, advocates for both approaches arebeginning to agree that there is a time for each.

Classical homeopathy is a painstaking approach that takes years to learn andmaster. It involves a lengthy interview process in which the homeopathdetermines every sign and symptom that the patient is experiencing. Thisincludes physical, mental, emotional, fears, changes, times and conditionsthat make the symptoms worse or better, and a host of other factors. After

Page 14: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

14

ascertaining the complete symptom picture, the homeopath then endeavors tomatch it to the exact remedy, called the simillimum.

Combination or complex homeopathy uses a combination of ingredients andpotencies to get the same result. If classical homeopathy can be described asa single bullet aimed at a target, then combination homeopathy might best belikened to a shotgun blast. This is a broader approach and better suited forthe busy healthcare professional. Combination homeopathy combines themost commonly prescribed remedies for a particular symptom picture into asingle formula. The body, which possesses an innate biological intelligence, then selects the exact frequency that it needs to begin its healing. Much likea radio tuner tunes in to a specific frequency and ignores the rest.

As an example, J.T. Kent’s Repertory of Homoeopathic Materia Medica lists87 pages of remedies for the different types of headache pain. A classicalhomeopath might take two hours to complete an intake interview, and thenspend additional time locating the exact remedy match. Combinationhomeopathy combines the most common headache remedies into a singleformula (which might simply be called ‘Headache’), it is efficacious andmuch more time efficient than the classical approach.

Combination remedies may also be used preventively. The physicalmanifestation of an illness is one of the last steps in the disease process. Forexample, by the time you actually come down with a head cold, your bodyhas been battling it for several days. A few drops of a combination remedytaken every so often (or after exposure) can work preemptively and keepyour body healthy and fine-tuned.

LIQUIDS VS SOLIDS

The two most common forms of homeopathic medicineare liquids and pellets (although gels, aerosols and trans-dermal patches are becoming more common). With rareexception, liquids are the medium of choice for theserious healthcare professional. Research has shown thatthe ‘memory’ of the homeopathic remedy is partiallycontained in the water/alcohol matrix of the solute. Whilethere are many other dimensions as well, the physicalmolecular structure of the solution is one of the mostimportant modes of information transfer. When a remedyis frozen, each remedy forms a crystalline structure that isunique to that remedy. This confirms that themanufacturing process changes the solutionfundamentally on a molecular level. Solids do not have

Page 15: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

15

the elasticity or malleability to accommodate this particular storagemechanism (since the liquid portion is evaporated out), and must thereforerely on the other dimensions to compensate for this shortcoming.

Liquids have a greater surface area than do solid pellets. This is better forthe patient, since liquids are immediately available and absorbed into thevascular bed beneath the tongue. The vapor of the remedy also interactswith nasopharyngeal receptors to accelerate the action of the remedy.

Liquids contain no fillers. Pellets generally contain a sugar medium (whichcan retard the immune response), and sometimes a type of gum to hold thesolid together.

Finally, there are times when remedies should not be taken internally (i.e.after mouth trauma or dental drilling). During these times, a liquid may beapplied externally. External applications are also appropriate for infants notreceptive to oral medication.

Water is a fascinating medium that science is just beginning to understand. An interesting series of experiments was carried out by Dr. Bernard Grad inthe 1960’s to determine whether or not psychic healers had any measurableenergetic influence. He soaked barley seeds in salt water, some of which hadbeen treated by psychic healers. Salt water is known to be a growthretardant. The first group was soaked in salt water that a healer had done a‘laying-on-of-hands’ treatment to. The other group was plain salt water. After soaking, the seeds were placed in an incubator and observed forgermination time, growth, chlorophyll content, etc. Statistical analysisshowed that the seeds that were soaked in the treated water sprouted moreoften, and had significantly greater height, weight, leaf size and chlorophyllcontent than those what were soaked in the regular salt water. Theseexperiments were repeated a number of times with similar positive results, and have also been reproduced by several other independent labs in the US.A variation using magnets instead of psychic healers produced similarresults. A third variation of these experiments had psychiatric patients holdwater for a while, and it was found that the water held by severely depressedpatients had the opposite effect of healer-treated water, in that it suppressedthe growth rate of seedlings. When the water was subjected to analysis, itwas found that there was significant change in the IR spectroscopy, revealingthat their atomic bond angle had changed. The water also experienceddecreased hydrogen bonding.

Dr. Robert Miller, a research chemist from Atlanta, independently confirmedsome of Dr. Grad’s work. He also discovered that water which had beenexposed to magnetic fields showed significant reductions in surface tension. He also observed that, if a solution of copper sulfate was super-saturated, it

Page 16: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

16

would normally precipitate out as a jade green crystal. If, however, thesolution was pretreated with a magnetic field of 4500 gauss for fifteenminutes, that the salts would precipitate with more of a turquoise blue color, and a noticeably coarser grain.

Water covers 2/3 of the surface of the planet, and 99% of the moleculesmaking up the human body contain water. Since water is one of the mostplentiful elements in the body, it is also conceivable that water isinstrumental in the mechanism of efficacy of homeopathy. These are justexamples of how water can store information in ways that are not completelyunderstood yet. As research proceeds, the ‘how’ of homeopathy willinevitably be unraveled.

UNDERSTANDING HOMEOPATHIC POTENCIES

If you look at the ingredients panel of a homeopathic remedy, you will noticethat the name of each ingredient is written as its Latin binomial name, and itis followed by a number and a letter (for example, Allium sativum 6x). Asmentioned before, homeopathic processing involves repeated dilutions andagitations. In our example, the ‘x’ in ‘Allium sativum 6x’ indicates that thedilution factor used during this processing was 1:10. This is referred to as adecimal dilution (denoted as x, D or DH). Sometimes there may be a ‘c’instead of an ‘x,’ which indicates that each dilution was carried out at a1:100 instead of a 1:10 factor, and is referred to as a centesimal dilution. The ‘6’ in our example indicates that this dilution and agitation process wasrepeated 6 times. Thus, higher numbers are less concentrated but more‘potent’ than lower numbers.

17

MULTIPLE POTENCY REMEDIES

While Mediral has always used multiple potencies in our remedies, the useof multiple potencies (also called multi-attenuations, homaccords®, andpotency chords) dates back to 1911* when Dr. Cahis of Barcelona first usedthe principle of multiple potencies. He likened these remedies to chords on amusical scale. As the ingredients combined, he found that theysynergistically enhanced one another without detracting from the individualpotencies, much as a chord played on a musical instrument has a uniquebeauty that is greater than the sum of the parts (notes). Cahis observed thatthe multiple potency remedies did, in fact, enhance the therapeutic effects ofthe treatment, leading to a quicker initiation of the primary healing responseand reducing, or in some cases even eliminating, the expected discomfortassociated with healing crises. In his words, “One may be sure that theaction is a milder one, the individual doses may be repeated more frequentlyand if it is necessary, as it often happens, they may be given over aprolonged period of time.”

Dr. Manfred Vosgerau demonstrated in “Basis and Results of Therapy withBalanced Potencies,” (Homotoxin Journal, Vol 9, No 6, 1970, pp135-143)that when potencies are combined, there was no averaging effect, but ratherallowes independent action by the individual potencies included in the blend. This agrees with Hans Heinrich Reckeweg’s conclusion that, “For theprinciple of the balanced potency, the leading idea is that different potencieswill reach different defense systems,” acting independently, but together.

Dr. Herman Junker published a study in 1982 entitled, “On the Effects ofExtremely Potentized Substances on Paramecia.” In this study, he usedpotencies ranging from 1x to 27x, and demonstrated clearly that somepotencies inhibit while others stimulate (demonstrating sinusoidal periodicitywith maximum and minimum stimulation at different potencies).

O. Julian (author “Materia Medica de Nosoden” – Heidelberg 1983) said ofhis use of multiple potencies, “The action of the potency chords is faster, ofgreater intensity, longer lasting and less connected with adverse reactions.”

Van Benschoten’s work (“Anatomical Resonance of HomeopathicPotencies,” Biological Therapy, Vol X, No. 1, 1992 pp197-208) hasidentified certain potency combinations that seem to resonate better with oneanother, thus producing better results. The first is the combination of 3x, 6x,12x, 30x and 200x; a second resonance is found between 6x and 1M; a thirdexists within 12x, 10M, 50M and CM potencies.

To appreciate multiple potency remedies, it is necessary to understand thechanges that occur in an organism during the progression of a disease state. At the onset, higher potencies are a more resonant and effective option; asdisease progresses and symptoms worsen, lower potencies tend to exert moreinfluence; and finally, during the last stage as symptoms begin to subsideand healing accelerates, the body once again responds better to the higherpotencies. This tendency may explain why a singular remedy sometimesfails in a classical setting - the stage of the disease dictates which potencywill be the most effective. Kent even stated, “We have never claimed thatevery potency fits every patient. The potency must be in accordance withthe patient’s condition, and be intended to act on a level identical to that ofthe disease whenever possible.” The difficulty of knowing which stage adisease is progressing through makes multiple potency remedies a moreeffective option.

One possible explanation for the efficacy of multiple potency remedies liesin the fact that homeopathics function on two distinct, yet overlapping, levels: chemical and ‘energetic.’ Lower potencies often contain measurablequantities of the original substance, thus chemically effecting the patient’sintra- and intercellular physiological concentrations. Enzymes are potentcatalysts of chemical reactions in the body, and concentrations in living cellsrange from 1 x 10-4 M to 1 x 10-10 M (M is the scientific notation forMolarity, a measure of concentration equal to one mole per liter), whichcorresponds to homeopathic potencies of 4x to 10x; hormones are normallyeven more dilute, often measuring from 1 x 10-9 M to 1 x 10-22 M,corresponding to homeopathic potencies of 9x to 22x. Lower potencyhomeopathics often deliver quantities of active agents in the sameconcentration that they are found inside the body.

On the other side of the coin, homeopathic remedies also possess an‘energetic’ component that is more evident at higher potencies. Commonsense tells us that if we continually dilute something, a point is eventuallyreached at which there is no measurable concentration of the originalsubstance in the final solution. Using Avogadro’s Number (6.023 x 1023), itmay be demonstrated mathematically that this point is the 24x potency, above which theoretically not even a single molecule of the originalsubstance may be found. If no chemical exists, but results are still obtained, there must be a different type of healing stimulation being delivered that stillhas the ability to effect a change. While the exact mechanism is still beinginvestigated, it is a demonstrable dimension of homeopathy.

Multiple potencies simplify the remedy selection, and provide a therapy thatacts faster, longer, more accurately and is better tolerated than singularpotencies - clearly a superior choice.

WAYS IN WHICH HOMEOPATHY CAN BE USED

Nosode Therapy – Homeopathic remedies prepared from pathogens ofdiseased tissue are often used to assist the body in recovering from diseasestates. These may include bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. Nosodehomeopathics boost the body’s natural immune response to fight off theinvader as the body was designed to do. Since the immune system is in fulluse during this therapy, there is no danger of residual immunologicalweaknesses which often follow courses of antibiotic therapy. An additionalbenefit of nosode therapy includes preserving the healthy bacterial flora, which is often destroyed by antibiotic treatment. Although not yet approvedfor use in US schools, nosode therapy is often used preventively as a safealternative to immunizations.

Sarcode Therapy – Homeopathic remediesprepared from healthy organs and tissue areused to rebuild organs or biological systemsthat have been weakened or damaged.Sarcodes (also called glandulars) may also beused to tone or reinforce a particular organ orsystem if trauma or stress is expected. Atypical example might be poor digestion dueto insufficient secretion of digestive enzymes.Conventional allopathic therapy would simplysupplement the missing or inadequateenzymes, and would likely be a lifetimetherapy. Sarcodes, however, would repair andstrengthen the inadequacies, naturallyincreasing the enzyme production andassisting the glands involved in returning totheir normal level of functioning. Sarcodetherapy also works with hyper-conditions,bringing the production levels down into theacceptable range.

Allersode Therapy – Homeopathic remedies prepared from allergens arecommonly used to treat allergies. In some ways, this is similar to theprogressive desensitization of conventional allergen injections, whichintroduce allergens into the body in ever-increasing concentrations until thebody no longer reacts with the cascading histamine reaction, producing thecommon allergy symptom picture. Allergens introduced homeopathicallyachieve the same result, except the introduction is sublingual, and themechanism is energetic rather than chemical.

20

Isode (Detoxode) Therapy – Homeopathic remedies prepared from anysubstance which may be contaminating the body or exerting a toxicinfluence can help to detoxify the body from these substances. Often theoffending substance is a synthetic by-product of some manufacturing processor a chemical compound that is later discovered to have dangerous sideeffects. Mercury amalgams are a prime example, and still the topic ofdebate. Once believed to be safe, alternative medicine now believes thatamalgams are responsible for a host of syndromes and illnesses. Apreparation made from these mercury amalgams may be used to help thebody to detoxify from the effects of the mercury and protect from futureexposure.

Nutritional Therapy – Vitamins, minerals and supplements can be preparedin low homeopathic potencies and still have an effect of the living system. The research of Royal Lee indicated that low doses of high quality, naturalvitamins function better in-vivo than mega-doses of synthetic vitamins. Thisis not to take the place of proper nutritional intake, but rather to serve as ameans of supplementing the often anemic and preservative-laden foods thatwe now find in our diets.

REGULATORY ISSUES

For legal and regulatory purposes, homeopathic remedies are classified bythe FDA as either prescription or over-the-counter drugs, and are addressedin the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938. With few exceptions, homeopathic remedies are classified as over-the-counter drugs, and theremedies referenced in this manual are for professional use only.Additionally, the marketing of homeopathic remedies is regulated by theU.S. Compliance Policy Guide of 1988.

The Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS), firstpublished in 1897, is recognized as the official compendium forhomeopathic medicine, functioning as the United States Pharmacopoeia(USP) does for the allopathic industry. To date, it includes over 1,300different monographs for individual homeopathic ingredients, and it isupdated regularly. It also contains standards for the preparation ofhomeopathic remedies and quality control measures that must be conductedby homeopathic manufacturing facilities.

Homeopathic manufacturers must register with the Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) and are inspected regularly to ensure compliance withGood Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the Code of Federal Regulations(CFR). Each homeopathic remedy must also go through a drug listingprocedure, and then have a unique National Drug Code (NDC) assigned.

Page 21: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

21

There are a number of homeopathic manufacturers who do not comply withthis requirement, so look for the NDC number on the label of anyhomeopathic to be sure the manufacturer is in compliance with the USGovernment.

The mechanism of action of homeopathics has yet to be completelyunderstood, but it is the same with many synthetic drugs. A research paperof the late William Boyd of Glasgow suggests, “The power of the solutiondoes not depend solely on the degree of dilution but on a special progressivemethod in its preparation; the energy latent in the drug is apparently liberatedand increased by a forceful shaking [succussion] of the liquid at each stageof the process.” Whatever the mechanism, 200 years of experience haveproven beyond a doubt that homeopathy does work, and can be an effectivecomplement to any chiropractic practice.

RESEARCH IN HOMEOPATHY

An extensive body of research on homeopathy has accumulated over the past200 years. Most of this research has been in the form of controlled studies(provings) which were carefully planned and meticulously monitored. Theresults of these trials may be found in the many volumes of the HomeopathicMateria Medica, and new and updated provings are being done every year onan ongoing basis. In addition to this body of knowledge, the scientificliterature is now being inundated with a growing number of double-blindstudies (the current standard by which conventional science evaluates itsown reliability) which clearly demonstrate the efficacy of homeopathictreatment. Homeopathy boasts bragging rights to the first double-blindcross-over study that was ever done, and was carried out by homeopaths in1906 on the homeopathic remedy Belladonna. The research was doneconcurrently in 11 different cities and resulted in a 665-page document onthe reproving of Belladonna (Bellows, H.P., “The Test Drug Proving of theO.O. & L. Society: A Reproving of Belladonna,” Boston: The AmericanHomeopathic Ophthalmological, Otological, and Laryngological Society.1906), a commonly used homeopathic remedy. With our culture’s relianceon scientific methodology, it is also interesting to note that the U.S.Congress Office of Technology Assessment (“Assessing the Safety andEfficacy of Medical Technology,” Washington, D.C.: U.S. GovernmentPrinting Office, September 1978, p. 7) estimated that only 15-20% of allconventional (allopathic) medical practices have been shown to be effectiveby controlled trials. See our website at www.mediral.com for a partiallisting of the research that has been done in support of homeopathy.

A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO HOMEOPATHY

The body is an elaborate, interconnected, living matrix of individual parts, the whole being synergistically greater than the sum of the parts. Anyattempt to divide the body into separate, functional systems based onanatomy, proximity or physiology is plagued by inaccuracies andshortcomings. The functional groups or systems that contemporary medicinerecognizes are so interconnected that no bodily system exists or functionsindependently of any other system. Recognizing, however, that medicalschools still teach the systems model, it is familiar to most medical personneland thus a helpful learning aid. A systems approach to homeopathy is apractical, simplified version of homeopathy to assist the doctor in finding theappropriate remedy quickly.

Simply stated, the systems approach first identifies the particular system thatis presenting a problem, and then treats that system based on the 3 stepsbelow.

A Note of Caution: Hering’s ‘Law of Cure’ specifies that healing occursfrom the inside out, from the top down, and from most vital to least vitalorgans. If a patient has been treated unsuccessfully by a number of doctors,or has been chronically sick for many years, true healing may take anextended period of time, and the patient may experience the briefreappearance of old illnesses – normally in the reverse order that they wereoriginally experienced. This is to be expected. Given this phenomenon, it isadvisable that the doctor or practitioner have access to the complete medicalhistory of the patient so he may reassure the patient when these illnessbriefly recur.

3 STEPS TO HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT

R E M O V E - T R E A T - R E B U I L D

1) Remove the Cause – immediate relief

2) Treat the Symptom Picture – short term treatmentsteps 1 and 2 should be performed simultaneously for best results

3) Rebuild Damaged Organs and Tissues – long term treatment

Page 23: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

23

Often in the treatment recommendations, multiple remedies are listed.Patient compliance is normally low, and the more difficult treatmentbecomes, the lower compliance seems to be. Depending on the patient andtheir condition, one of the recommended remedies may be sufficient, whileothers may require multiple remedies.

It should be remembered that homeopathy is just one of many effectivecomplementary medical disciplines. It may be effectively used inconjunction with other modalities of treatment, such as chiropracticadjustment, herbology, hydrotherapy, supplementation and dietarymodifications.

STEP 1 - REMOVE THE CAUSE

This is the first step in the 3-Step Homeopathic Process. There is always a causative agent that creates any problem, usually it is a violation of natural law. Whether a nutritionaldeficiency, stress or the severe trauma of an automobileaccident, the cause will continue to manifest itself as “dis-ease” until it is dealt with appropriately. If the cause isn’t dealt with first, any attempts to heal will result in limited success because the causative agentwill continue to recreate the condition, regardless of how much therapy isdone. Treating the symptoms picture without alleviating the cause may alsoresult in suppression of symptoms, and the underlying cause of the problemwill be re-expressed as some other disease conditions (i.e. hives, headaches, asthma, etc.).

Stress and Mental Disorders – a variety of homeopathics areavailable to deal with stress and mental disorders (see the section onConditions and Disorders). Massage, reflexology and hydrotherapyare invariably useful. If the perceived cause of stress or disorder isexternal (i.e. overbearing boss, repetitive motion syndrome, firefighting, etc) and removing the source is not practical, patientshould be taught a variety of stress-reduction techniques to helpdissipate the stress, or reeducated to lessen the burden on the body.

Heredity – genetic predisposition is best dealt with by adjustment, and homeopathic miasmic or glandular therapy. This is a long-termtherapy, since heredity is a condition from birth. Awareness ofthese conditions helps to minimize their influence. For example, ifan individual is predisposed to diabetes mellitus, glandularhomeopathics for the involved organs and herbs to help the bloodsugar balance and glucose/insulin interactions would berecommended.

Page 24: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

24

Toxicity – the body is a marvel of processing and eliminationactivities. Occasionally, however, the body is exposed tosubstances that are not easily flushed from the system and canaccumulate causing toxic conditions. Homeopathic detoxificationis a gentle, yet effective means of ridding the body of theseproblem-causing toxins. Again, it is important to isolate the causeof the toxicity and remove it immediately (see next page forsuggestions for homeopathic detoxification).

Allergies – an improperly functioning immune system isresponsible for allergic reactions (do not confuse true allergies withintolerances). There are a number of allergy products that may beimplemented to help the body deal with minor or debilitatingallergies (see the chapter on Conditions and Disorders). If thegeneral allergy products are not effective, kinesiology or scratchtesting may be necessary to isolate the specific antigen causing theallergy, and then a custom homeopathic may be made of thatspecific allergen.

Trauma – once a trauma occurs, the body may be in need of repairand ‘re-setting.’ Common homeopathic remedies can effectively doboth, assisting the body in overcoming the danger of compensatingfor a weakness or injury, thus keeping the kinesthetic memory ofthe trauma alive and preventing true healing to take place.

Pathogens – infectious agents are everywhere, and an effectiveimmune system continually functions to keep any microbialpathogens at bay. Occasionally, the defenses become impaired andneed either a tune-up, or a jump-start to help battle an acutemicrobial threat. Homeopathic medicine can be especially helpfulfor those conditions (see the chapter on Conditions and Disorders).

Destructive Energy – geopathic stress, high-voltage power lines, constant exposure to electromagnetic emissions and the like canhave a detrimental effect on health. Fortunately, most of these canbe counteracted homeopathically, although the ideal situation is tohave the patient move away from such exposure.

Nutritional Imbalance – there are few things that contribute toone’s health (or lack of it) more directly than one’s diet.Regrettably, in our fast-fix fast-food world, proper nutrition isbecoming difficult to come by. Teaching our patients to eatresponsibly is critical. Proper nutrition helps the healing processand ensures long-term, on-going health.

Page 25: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

25

Western Lifestyle – people in our western culture tend to wakebefore they are rested, inhale a rushed cup of coffee as they drive towork breathing automobile exhaust, sit at a desk all day longbreathing re-circulated air in artificial sunlight, dash home in thesame car breathing the same exhaust, gulp down an end-of-daymeal, and then plant themselves in front of the tube for 5-6 hours ofvegetative ‘entertainment.’ We need to encourage our patients toget some exercise, breathe some fresh air, eat some fruit andvegetables, and spend some time in the sunshine. Health is nature’sway.

DETOXIFICATION

Eliminating the source of exposure, as well as eliminating the toxins already stored in thebody are both essential for proper healing. Accumulated toxins keep the body in a state ofhomeostatic imbalance, which predisposes it to illness. This is an especially difficultproblem when dealing with resistant pathogens (i.e. yeast, amoeba, worms) or continuingexposure to toxic elements (i.e. mercury from amalgam fillings or radiation).

The remedies listed below are generalized approaches for detoxifying classes ofchemicals and organisms. If the specific toxin has been identified, it is always preferred touse a multiple-potency homeopathic preparation of that item. For example, if a patient hasbeen exposed to lead, you could either use Mediral Metex, because it is designed forgeneralized heavy metal detoxification and it includes Plumbum Metallicum in theingredients, or you could request a singular homeopathic of Plumbum Metallicum by itself.

26

STEP 2 - TREAT THE SYMPTOM PICTURE

The second step in the 3-step process is to treat the presentingsymptom picture. This step is actually the second half of stepone, since both step one and step two should be done

concurrently for best results. Complex homeopathy makes this much easierthan classical homeopathy. Simply identify the presenting symptoms, andadminister the appropriate remedy. For simplicity sake, this has beendivided into systems, as discussed earlier. It is important to remember thatno system acts independently of any other system – all are interrelated andfunction as a whole.

Musculoskeletal System – a variety of structural maladies arecommonly seen in chiropractic practices. The skeleton, musculature, and all the associated tissues normally performflawlessly. Occasionally, however, dysfunction occurs. When itdoes, homeopathy can assist with any number of remedies designedspecifically to support and enhance the physical structure.

Nervous System – critical for communication within the physicalbody, occasionally these pathways become blocked or sluggish.Homeopathy can help to unblock and even rebuild the nervoustissue and restore the two-way communication channels throughoutthe body.

Circulatory System – the physical body depends on blood beingdelivered to every cell in the body; and the proper removal of wasteproducts from cells and surrounding tissues. When circulatoryfunction is impaired, ill health is quick to follow. Specifichomeopathic remedies can help to restore proper circulationquickly.

Respiratory System – the lungs are the point of oxygenation forthe blood, assist in elimination of waste gases from cellularmetabolism and function as part of the immune system withphagocytosis on the alveolar level. Oxygen means life, andhomeopathy can keep the pulmonary system functioning at peaklevels.

Gastrointestinal System – even proper nutrition is useless if itcannot be absorbed. Proper pH balance and production of digestiveenzymes can be supported by the correct use of combinationhomeopathic remedies. Solid waste elimination is also critical tothe maintenance of health, and may be assisted by the appropriatehomeopathic remedies.

Page 27: Combination Homeopathy Manual 2010-01 - mediral international · Our gratitude to Henry Gray (1825–1861), Anatomy of the Human Body (Gray’s Anatomy), 1918, for the illustrations

27

Endocrine Glands – similar to the nervous system in function, theendocrine glands are a complex network of communicationstructures with feedback loops that control multiple functionsthroughout the physical body. Disorders precipitated by theendocrine system create a treatable symptom picture and generallyrequire sarcodes (glandular remedies) to help rebuild the involvedglands and tissues.

Urinary & Reproductive System – the system of liquid wasteelimination in the body is a dynamic equilibrium maintained bythousands of chemical reactions in every part of the body everysecond of the day. If waste material is allowed to accumulate, avariation of a few tenths of a pH can send the body into crisis.Maintenance of this system is also critical for the continuance of thespecies.

MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM - GENERAL

Because of the interdependence of muscle and bone, it is appropriate that the two ofthese systems be discussed together. Bone is a special form of connective tissue madefrom collagenous material and impregnated with mineral salts, especially phosphates ofcalcium. It is dynamic, living tissue, intimately involved in processes such as calciumhomeostasis, protection of vital organs, locomotion, blood cell production and a host ofother functions. It responds dynamically to stresses placed upon it, it is constantly beingreabsorbed and reformed, and is well vascularized. Because of its living matrix structure, constant supplies of oxygen, protein and minerals must be available for the maintenanceof normal bone function.

In order to fulfill their locomotor duties, the bones of the body work closely with the muscletissue found throughout the body. Muscle cells making up the muscles of the body can beexcited chemically, electrically and mechanically to produce an action potential that istransmitted along their cell membrane to create movement. They contain contractileproteins and have a contractile mechanism that is activated by their action potential.Muscles are composed of multiple bundles of fibers. While hypertrophy may occur duringweight training, there is no way to increase the number of muscle fibers in the body.Regular use is required to keep muscle toned. Without use, muscle will atrophy.Tendons are collagenous bands that connect muscle to bone, and ligaments are bandsconnecting bone to bone or cartilage. Fascial structures are present throughout themusculature and help to enclose muscles, lubricate and facilitate. Muscle is divided intothree types: Skeletal, Cardiac and Smooth. Skeletal muscle comprises the greatest massof musculature, accounting for about 40% of human body weight, and is normally underdirect control of nerve stimulation and voluntary control. Cardiac muscle has cross-striations, and contracts rhythmically in the absence of external innervation, due largely tothe presence of pacemaker cells in the myocardium that discharge spontaneously.Smooth muscle lacks cross-striation, is found mostly in hollow viscera and containsirregular pacemakers.

MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM – SMALL JOINTS

Small joint pain and dysfunction may range from a minor irritation to severe disability. With the complex interplay of muscles, ligaments, fasciae, nerves, tendons and bursaefound in and around small joints, any number of these factors may interact to complicatethe simple movement of joints. These can include phalanges, metacarpals, metatarsals, etc. Healing may be quick due to their small articulations and the ease with which theycan be immobilized during the healing process.

MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM – HEAD AND FACE

The specialized structural features of the head and face lend themselves to some specificdisorders. Because of this, specialized formulas have been designed to assist with thesedisorders. Not included in this section are the special organs of sense, which are coveredin the section on the Nervous System, 5 Senses.

MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM – LARGE JOINTS

Large joint anatomy and physiology is similar to that of small joints, but generally intendedto move and bear greater weight. These articulations involve larger muscle groups andtendons, broader ligament bands and weight-bearing cartilage in the joints. The majorityof the joints of the extremities are synovial joints, which are specialized to allow freemovement. The synovium lines the joint cavity and secretes synovial fluid to nourishsmooth, avascular articular cartilage covering the ends of the bones making up the joint. These include the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, etc. Healing may be slower due to thelarger size of the articulations and the difficulty of immobilizing a large joint.

NERVOUS SYSTEM - GENERAL

The complex system of afferent and efferent communication channels, ganglionic centersand synaptic connections weave a network throughout the physical body, allowing forvoluntary and involuntary control of every function in the body. Roughly divided into thecentral nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, the human nervous systemcontains about 1012 (1 trillion) neurons. Neurons, the basic building blocks of the nervoussystem, receive and transmit impulses. On the average, each neuron divides to formabout 1000 synaptic endings, which yields about 1015 synapses to interact with andtransmit to other cells. The autonomic nervous system is divided into two components: thesympathetic (the catabolic component directed toward expenditure of energy and inhibitingthe intake and assimilation of nutrition) and the parasympathetic (the anabolic componentdirected toward preservation ,accumulation and storage of energy) divisions. These twodivisions perform a sophisticated dual-coordination of physiology within the body thatmaintains homeostasis. With this web of interconnectedness throughout the body, it isessential to keep it in peak working condition. Below are some homeopathicpharmaceuticals recommended for specific conditions encountered in and around thenervous system.

NERVOUS SYSTEM – THE 5 SENSES

Information about the environment (both internal and external) is delivered to the centralnervous system by an intricate system of specialized sensory devices, known as thesensory receptors. The eye is a delicate structure designed to focus light waves through avariable lens/aperture system and project it onto the retina lining the rear of the globe. There, receptors (rods and cones) receive and transmit this information via the opticnerves, through the optic chiasm to the lateral geniculate body, and then on back to thevisual cortex where the experience of ‘sight’ is created.

The outer and middle ear structures capture and transmit sound waves via a system ofmuscle, cartilage and bones (which serves as a mechanical transformer) to the inner ear. There, specialized receptors convert the acoustic energy to nerve impulses, which arerelayed to the pons, midbrain, thalamus and cortex to create the perception of sound. Theinner ear also contains three semicircular canals which serve as the body’s apparatus ofequilibrium.

The sense of smell (olfaction) is produced through stimulation of the 1st cranial nerves, theolfactory bulbs, via receptors in the olfactory mucous membrane in the roof of the nasalcavity. Humans can distinguish more than 4,000 different odors, and the capacity forvariable perception and adaptability can block even the most disagreeable odor whencontinuously exposed to it, without changing the threshold for other odors.

The experience of taste is synthesized from the 4 basic tastes – sweet, sour, bitter andsalty. Human’s ability to discriminate differences in the intensity of tastes is relativelycrude, requiring a 30% change in concentration before an intensity difference can bedetected. Taste buds, the sensory cells for taste, are located on the tongue, palate, epiglottis and pharynx. Each taste bud (totaling about 10,000 in humans) is composed of4 types of cells, and is innervated by about 50 cross-connected nerve fibers. The facial, glossopharyngeal and the vagus nerves carry the nerve fibers through the thalamus, andon to the postcentral gyrus in the area specific to cutaneous face sensation.

There are 4 cutaneous senses: touch/pressure, cold, warm and pain. The skin contains avariety of receptors, including naked nerve endings, expanded tips on sensory nerveterminals and encapsulated endings. Touch receptors are most plentiful in the finger tipsand lips, but are also especially dense around hair follicles. Damage to this multitude ofreceptors can often be reversed by using the correct homeopathic, and nervous systemlesions creating disruptions in sensation can often be healed by prolonged use of sarcodalhomeopathics.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The circulatory system is a closed system composed of the cardiac muscle, serving as thepump, and vessels to carry blood to and from every part of the body. Arteries carry bloodaway from the heart, veins carry blood to the heart, and capillaries are the connecting micro-vessels between the arteries and veins where nutrient, gas and waste exchange takesplace.

The lymphatic system is also considered part of the circulatory system in that it drainsperipheral tissues in parallel with the venous structures. Lymph is composed of manydifferent chemical and biological components. Circulation of lymph is accomplishedprimarily via contraction and relaxation of surrounding muscle groups, rather than a pumplike the blood supply. Among other functions, it also assists in immune system in defendingthe body.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Air is warmed and filtered through the nasopharynx, and then proceeds down through thetrachea and into the lungs. With three lobes on the right, and two on the left, the lungs arethe site of oxygenation for the body’s entire blood supply. They also assist with theremoval of gases and waste material that are the by-products of cellular metabolism.Additionally, the lungs are a sight for the immune system to phagocytize microbial threatsat the alveoli level, and mechanically eliminate larger contaminants via coughing andmucocilary activity.

GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM

Digestion, absorption, assimilation and elimination are the functions of the gastrointestinalsystem. The mouth and pharynx are the common entrance to the GI tract as well as therespiratory tract. The mouth and pharynx are lubricated by secretions from the simple buccalglands and the complex salivary glands, the parotid, submaxillary and sublingual glands, which begins digestion. Signals from the medulla oblongata coordinate swallowing (andvomiting) to deliver the food bolus through the esophagus to the stomach. In the stomach, acid and pepsin continue the digestive process. Proceeding on, the food then passes intothe duodenum, where alkaline secretions of the pancreas, liver and the mucosal Brunner’sglands neutralize the acidic chime from the stomach. Foods passes through the jejunumand the small intestine where it is massaged, broken down and absorbed into the villi of theintestinal walls. Carbohydrates are broken down by enzymes on the brush border of theintestinal cells; proteins are split by proteolytic enzymes from the pancreas (activated oncein the small intestine); and fats are digested by pancreatic lipase. It continues to the cecum,to which the appendix is attached, and begins the journey into the large intestine. It travelsup the ascending, across the transverse and down the descending colon where water andelectrolytes are absorbed from the mass, and on to the sigmoid colon, rectum and the finalremaining waste passes out through the anus. The entire tract is inundated with a richsupply blood vessels and lymph channels which make nutrition available to the body.

The GI tract is basically a long tube, averaging 25 - 30 feet long, connecting the mouth withthe anus, and is designed to extract nutritional components and fluid from anything thatpasses through it. Transit time varies from a few hours to several days, depending on thefood eaten and the condition of the alimentary tract. The actual enzymatic breakdown of thenutrients is quite complex.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM – ADRENAL MEDULLA, CORTEX

The endocrine system adjusts and correlates the activities of the body systems inresponse to the external and internal environment. This integration is brought about byhormones, produced by ductless glands located throughout the body, and introduced intothe blood stream. These circulating chemical messengers are then delivered to their targetcells where they regulate metabolic processes. The endocrine glands include the adrenalmedulla and cortex, the pineal and pituitary glands, the thyroid and parathyroid glands, thethymus, the pancreas, the testis and the ovaries.

The adrenal glands are also known as the suprarenal glands because of their position ontop of the kidneys. The adrenal medulla consists of a single zone and is controlledprimarily by the sympathetic nervous system. Acetylcholine stimulates directly thesynthesis and release of epinephrine and norepinephrine – which lead to peripheralvasoconstriction, increased myocardial contractility, glycogenolysis, lipolysis and a host ofother functions. The adrenal cortex, in contrast, consists of three zones (zonaglomerulosa, zona fasciculate and zona reticularis) and is more under humoral control. The cortex is responsible for the secretion of aldosterone – largely controlling the body’sdelicate balance of sodium; cortisol – leading to net tissue catabolism, anti-inflammatoryactivity, and in the liver, gluconeogenesis and albumin synthesis; and androgens andestrogens – the human sex hormones.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM – THYROID AND PARATHYROID

The principle hormonal products of the thyroid gland are thyroxin and triiodothyronine, which regulate metabolism primarily through induction of enzymes. The thyroid alsosecretes thyrocalcitonin, which increases calcium incorporation into bone and decreasescalcium excretion by the kidneys.

There are generally four parathyroid glands, two embedded in each side of the thyroidgland. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is produced by these glands, and acts directly onbone to increase bone resorption and mobilize Ca2+. In addition, it increases plasmaCa2+ (through increasing resorption in the kidneys and absorption in the intestine) anddepresses plasma phosphate (through increasing phosphate excretion in the urine).

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM – PITUITARY AND PINEAL GLANDS

The pituitary gland, also called the hypophysis, is actually 3 glands in one (anterior, intermediate [rudimentary] and posterior lobes), producing and/or releasing a number ofregulatory hormones such as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, stimulating the synthesisand secretion of thyroid hormones), melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH, causingdarkening of the skin), thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, which stimulates the releaseof TSH to maintain a constant level of thyroid hormones in the blood) corticotropin(ACTH, an adrenal cortex stimulant released in response to stress), follicle-stimulatinghormone (facilitating the development of ovarian follicles and testicular tubules) andluteinizing hormone (controlling ovulation, the development of the corpus leteum andestrogen secretion). The posterior lobe is connected to the hypothalamus via neuralconnections, and the anterior lobe is connected by vascular connections. The pinealgland, also known as the epiphysis, secretes melatonin and functions as a timing deviceto keep internal events synchronized with the light-dark cycle in the environment.

The naturally occurring estrogens are 17β-estradiol, estrone and estriol, and are related toincreased libido, duct growth in the breasts and mammary maturation. Some androgensare produced, which are responsible for the growth of hair at puberty. Progesterone isresponsible for the progestational changes in the endometrium and many cyclic changes.

GENERAL PATIENT INSTRUCTIONSFOR HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

1. For best results, do not eat or drink anything 15 – 30 minutes before orafter taking a remedy. Water is acceptable.

2. Dosage and Administration:

1 oz. homeopathic products – Adults, 10 to 20 drops under thetongue, 3 times per day. Children under 12 years of age, 2 to 5drops, 2 times per day, or as directed by your physician. Takebetween meals. Store in a cool, dark place.

4 oz. homeopathic products – Adults, 1 to 2 teaspoons orally perday. Children under 12 years of age, 1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon per day,or as directed by your physician. Take between meals. Shake wellbefore using. Best if refrigerated after opening.

3. In acute cases, remedies may be given more frequently. Take every 15-30 minutes and reduce the frequency as symptoms begin to abate.

4. For infants, the remedy may be administered onto the umbilicus or onthe skin, and rubbed in with the infant’s finger.

5. Avoid caffeine while taking remedies.

6. Strong smells should be avoided. These include camphor, menthol, deepheating products, essential oils, mothballs, nail polish remover, petroleum products and even mint.

7. Electric blankets or any machinery and appliances that generate anelectromagnetic field may interfere with the efficacy of the homeopathicremedy.

8. Keep the remedy out of sunlight, heat or any source of electromagneticfields (such as TV, computers, magnets, etc.). Remedies may berefrigerated safely, but are irreparably damaged by temperatures over140°F (such as may be found on a window sill or inside the glove-box ofa locked car on a warm day).

46

ACUTE PRESCRIBING GUIDELINES

Singular remedies of 30c and 200c are good potencies for first aid (i.e.shock, trauma) and acute conditions (i.e. flu, fever, cold) 3 to 4 times perday. May be given every 15-20 minutes until symptoms begin to abate.

If a remedy seems to be working, continue using it. If it is working slowly, you may need to increase the frequency of doses, or use a higher potency ofthe same remedy.

As the patient improves, decrease frequency of dosage.

CHRONIC PRESCRIBING GUIDELINES

Singular remedies at 6c are good potencies to begin with when treating achronic condition. Remedy should be repeated 3 to 4 times per day.

If a remedy seems to be working, continue using it. Improvement may beslow for chronic conditions. Do not change frequency or potency unless thenature of the condition changes.

If a remedy stops working, prescribe a different remedy based on the newsymptom picture.

PRECAUTIONS

Homeopathic remedies contain alcohol. Exercise appropriate precautions foralcohol-containing products (i.e. contraindicated by alcohol allergy, Anabuseprescription, etc.). Most of the alcohol may be evaporated by placing thedose in an ounce of warm (not hot) water and waiting for 3 minutes.CAUTION: this procedure does not evaporate all alcohol. Homeopathicremedies are inactivated by temperatures over 140°F, so use only warmwater if utilizing this technique.

Provings. While homeopathic remedies do not have side-effects such asthose commonly associated with synthetic drugs, a ‘proving’ may occur. Ahomeopathic proving may occur within the first 72 hours of taking a remedy.Provings are symptoms caused by the action of the homeopathic remedy andare generally mild in appearance. Provings may be identified bydiscontinuing the dosage. Symptoms should abate within 24 hours.

WHY CHOOSE MEDIRAL PRODUCTS

Contrary to what many manufacturers would have the consumer believe, allhomeopathic medicine is not alike. A doctor has an obligation to provide thepatient with the most effective, least harmful therapy available. There arethree things to look for when selecting homeopathic medicines.

LIQUID FORM: The medicinal message is preserved in the liquid crystalmatrix of the water and alcohol solution. When pellets are made, the liquidis evaporated, leaving a weakened shadow of the medicine in the lactosemolecules of the pellets.

HAND PROCESSED: Many large manufacturers use machines to processtheir homeopathic products. The drawback of using machinery is that theyproduce strong electromagnetic fields which can damage the strength of theremedy. Additionally, the speed of mechanized processing creates heat andturbulence in the remedy, both of which introduce additional forces into theprocessing of the remedy that may be harmful. Homeopathic medicines aresensitive to EM fields and heat, and should be shielded from them.

NDC NUMBER: A responsible manufacturer registers their homeopathicformulas with the FDA. A registered homeopathic will have the NDC(National Drug Code) number on the primary display panel of the label. Besure the manufacturer that you select is in compliance with FDA guidelines.

Not coincidentally, Mediral productsmeet these three requirements. First, the remedies are all available inliquid form. Pellets are occasionallymanufactured on a limited, customorder basis, but liquids make up thevast majority of our product line, simply because they work better.Second, Mediral insists on handmanufacturing all homeopathicproducts. This includes standard formula remedies as well as customproducts for special orders. Third, all stock remedies are registered with theFDA and display an NDC number on the label, to ensure compliance withgovernmental regulations. Our laboratory uses ‘Tru-PotencyTM’manufacturing to enhance the efficacy of their remedies. In addition tocGMP’s, this includes patent-pending processes and a host of quality controltechniques to ensure a consistently reliable product. The Mediral lab isinspected regularly by the FDA to ensure compliance with regulations and tohelp guard the public against unsafe practices.

MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE AT MEDIRAL

Mediral International Inc. was established with a single purpose – to providethe highest quality natural healthcare products to the medical professional. With over 3,000 mother tinctures in stock, Mediral provides combination aswell as classical remedies for homeopathic use. The Mediral customlaboratory is fully equipped to manufacture special formulas to the doctor’sspecifications, and also offers complete private labeling facilities.

The manufacturing facility is a federally and state registered pharmaceuticallaboratory, and is regularly inspected by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) to ensure compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices(cGMP) and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). All Mediralhomeopathic products are registered with the FDA and are assigned aNational Drug Code (NDC) number, displayed on the main panel of thelabel. This number identified each product as a unique, registered formulaand helps to expedite third-party reimbursement programs.

The laboratory is a clean-room environment with positive pressure airflowand constant HEPA filtration to maintain a work area free of contamination.Laboratory technicians are required to wear gowns, boots, hairnets andmasks to further maintain a clean work area. Every batch of product issubjected to an extensive battery of quality control tests to ensure the purityof the final product. This testing includes culturing for biologicalcontaminants and an innovative type of analysis that measures theelectromagnetic properties of the formulas to ensure consistency. Additionaltests include air quality analysis, pH testing, alcohol determination andorganoleptic testing. These tests assure each batch of product is standardizedfor safety and efficacy.

Many of the Mediral homeopathic products contain alcohol, which serves asa solvent during the preparation of the raw materials, acts as a safe andeffective preservative, and enhances the efficacy of the final remedy.Mediral uses only pharmaceutical grade (USP), non-grain ethanol. This isthe purest form of alcohol available, and eliminates grain-related allergiescomplicating the healing process. The innovative manufacturing techniquesutilized by Mediral set new standards of excellence for the industry andprove that not all homeopathic products are the same. Hand-succussion isjust one of the many unique procedures used during the ‘Tru-Potency’manufacturing of all Mediral homeopathic products. Homeopathic medicinesare sensitive to radiation and may be damaged by the electromagnetic fieldscreated by the automated processing machines that many of the largercompanies use. Mediral believes that, even though hand-succussion is morecostly and time consuming, a superior product is worth the extra effort.
