Introduction

Unusually, the church at Combe Hay has no dedication to a particular saint. On the outside eastern wall of the church is a metal plaque with:

This churchyard was enlarged and repaired at the cost of Samuel Butler Esquire under a Faculty dated February 3rd 1871 which Faculty provides that unless with the consent of the said Samuel Butler his heirs and successors lords of the manor no burials shall take place in the part of the Churchyard which lies to the southward of this plate.

In practice, there is only a 3m gap between the southern wall of the church and a fence.

From the Bath Chronicle of Thu 3 Oct 1878 p3: COMBE HAY CHURCH RESTORATION

On Thursday last, the Right Rev. the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells preached in the above-named church to a crowded congregation. The church, it may be remembered, some five or six years ago was in a very unsatisfactory state. There was a huge gallery at the west end, which hid two-thirds of a fine arch in the tower of the 15th century, and excluded all light from the west window. The pews were square boxes as high as men’s shoulders, whilst the old-fashioned reading desk and pulpit had become as rotten as touchwood. Since that time the squire had added a high pitch roof and a new south aisle, heated the church with Messrs. Haden’s apparatus, and repewed the body throughout; the interior of the chancel fittings, American organ, and pulpit have been done by the Rector. Although the restoration is not yet completed, some £1,300 or £1,400 must have been spent upon the external and substantial improvements of the edifice, and at least £200 more upon the inside, while five handsome stained glass windows have been added respectively by the Rector, Mr. Butler, Mr. Hill, Mr. Webb, and though last, not least – that at the west end- by Mrs. Barnard, which is a remarkably beautiful one, “in memoriam” to her late husband. All the windows are by Messrs. Bell and Son, Bristol. With regard to the church bells, we would venture to suggest that if sufficient funds can be raised they should be tuned or recast, as the case may require; as they are only a peal of four an additional one would make the peal more complete; at the same time we would give those who rang them credit for having done the best they could on Thursday.

The Bishop previous to the service was entertained at the Rectory, where friends from a distance, the churchwardens, Messrs. Hill and Gibbs, and other parishioners, had been invited to meet him.

The service at the church was well attended, the weather was propitious, and the whole day’s proceedings were most satisfactory. The prayers were read by the rector, the Rev. C. C. Layard, the 1st lesson by the Rev.

H. B. Burney, vicar of Norton St. Philip, and the 2nd by the Rev. W. Acworth, rector of Southstoke. The American organ was presided over by Miss Layard, whilst the usual village choir who led the singing showed to advantage what may be accomplished by painstaking in a little village, and the responses and singing were also heartily taken up by the assemble congregation. . . .

In 1883 there was a petition from the parishioners for the removal of the rector (Charles Clement Layard). The matter was referred to the Bishop, the rector refused to leave but an agreement was eventually made with the lord of the manor that he would leave after 18 months provided he could nominate his successor. This new rector, George English, was installed in July 1884 having been approved by both the patron (Samuel English) and the bishop. There was then another petition from the parishioners for the removal of the new rector. The Bath Chronicle of Thu 20 Nov 1884 has a letter from the bishop asserting that “Mr. English is a clergyman of the highest respectability” and that “The state of the parish in respect of the church is disgraceful and lamentable in the highest degree. But the fault does not lie with me or with Mr. English. When the parishioners return to a sense of their duty the trouble and scandal will be at an end.”

From the Bath Chronicle and Herald of Sat 22 Mar 1930 p5 in an article entitled ‘An Unspoilt Gem – Combe Hay and its Winding Dingles’:

A beautiful sight awaits the pedestrian as he drops over Fortnight Hill down into the village of Combe Hay, not a wide unbroken panorama stretching away to a distant horizon, but a small secluded valley which twists its way between the high hills, one of those peaceful unspoilt paradises which the Englishman out under the tropical sun cherishes in his heart. It is indeed an idyllic spot and its simple beauty can be as easily appreciated in March as in the depth of summer. Up above, the cold north wind drives the cottagers to their hearths as it sweeps the down with its merciless breath and the grey clouds fleet

across the blue sky with the taint of snow in their scudding forms. But down in the little valley, the tress wave listlessly in the breeze, and, except for an occasional blast, the wind seems to miss this enchanted spot. The winding brook babbles through the narrow meadows, and on the rounded tussock-covered slope the lambs may be seen gambolling in the fitful sun.

Here and there dense scrub and untamed copses hang to the hillsides, and the tall pine trees groan by the stream, as the breeze hits their “mop-like” foliage. The sun lights up their warm red bark and glistens on the water below as it tumbles under the moss-grown bridge.

THE VILLAGE CHURCH From out among the trees and old stone barns, the

little village church raises its venerable tower. Several times has Come Hay’s church been enlarged and partially rebuilt, but it still preserves a ait of antiquity. Some fir trees hide the old great fane, and box and yew bushes dot the graveyard. Inside no ancient tome or priceless window have the same mellowed tint of a venerable past. In the sanctuary two monuments flank the altar, one to members of the Bennet family, the other to the Smith family, both of which families were lords of the manor in the eighteenth century. A couple of old brass plates reveal the fact that Sir Lewis Dyve, of Bronham, in the county of Bedford, a worthy knight, who died in 1669, and one of his contemporaries, Robert Pierce, “Bachelor in Divinity,” who died twelve years before him, lie buried underneath the nave.

QUAINT EPITAPHS Small though the graveyard is, it contains several

interesting epitaphs. “A loving Husband and Father dear, And faithful friend lied buried here; If love or care could death prevent, His days would not so soon be spent. He leaves a wife and children seven, To follow in his steps to heaven. ‘Twas hard to part with such a one. But still, oh Lord, ‘Thy will be done.’

runs a comparatively modern example dated 1886. A thin vein of irony seems to run through the next, an older one, erected in 1763.

“Short was the warning that death gave When I was summoned to the grave. Therefore, dear friends don’t grieve for me, I hope in heaven I shall you see The following is rather a touching, if business-like,

tribute to a parting spouse. “A Friend sincere, A Wife so dear, Who in the dealings was true and just, And never did betray her trust.” And yet another: ― “Here moulder, what little was left, Dear Emma, of thy beloved frame; Whilst their parents devote their last breath Their Mansions thou hast entered to gain.”

Very quaint and affectionate, although modern, maids might not like to be referred to as mere “frames.” In the church there is a monument to Carrington, author of the once widely-read “Dartmoor” and other poems; his grave is in the churchyard.

AN INTERESTING HISTORY Combe Hay, quiet and unimportant though it may be

nowadays, has a long history. In the days of Rome many an illustrious personage, and frequently bands of soldiers, must have passed this little place, for the ancient Fosseway runs through the parish. When the Norman William usurped the throne his half-brother, Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent, that celebrated and warlike prelate, whose ambition proved his final ruin, was lord of these winding dingle. He was Chief Judiciary of England, a pillar of the Church, and reputed throughout England and France for his learning. Later it became the property of the family of Harvey, Hawey, or Hay, and thus obtained its additional title. After remaining in their possession for many generations it passed by marriage to a family of Stradling, of Baltic extraction. Of this family was the versatile scholar, Sir Edward Stradling, who compiled a Welsh grammar.

Away from the beaten track, unknown to the tourist, without a petrol pump or any other monstrosity to mar its rural beauty, this little gem nestles under the southern edge of Odd Down, which forms an effective barrier between it and the neighbouring City of Bath.

M.D.

The reference to Carrington and Dartmoor is to Noel Thomas/Toms Carrington (1777-1830) who was a schoolmaster and poet. Rambles About Bath by R E Peach (1876) p158 states that in 1871 the Bath Literary Club had a plaque erected in the church in his honour and that thereafter his younger son had ‘a beautiful Gothic tomb of Cheesering granite’ placed over his grave. His elder son, Henry Edmund Carrington (1805-1859), was proprietor and editor of the Bath Chronicle for 28 years. Cheesewring is a granite tor on the eastern side of Bodmin moor. The quarry was established in 1845 although mining had occurred in previous centuries. The Stradling family referred to were from St Donat’s, Glamorganshire. The baronetcy was created in 1611. They are reputed to be a branch of the noble family of Strättligen from Thun, Switzerland. Edward Stradling (1528/9-1609) funded the printing of Siôn/John Dafydd Rhys’s Welsh grammar of 1592.

The church is Grade II listed. The parish is part of the benefice of Combe Down and Combe Hay, the parishes having been united in 1982 (The London Gazette Thu 4 Aug 1982 Issue 49074 p10239). It is reported that some of the memorials in the old churchyard have come from the neighbouring manor house having been stored in the cellars and were ‘planted’ in arbitrary positions. There is a new cemetery off a lane that runs by the Wheatsheaf northwards.

From the Bath Chronicle of Thu 26 Jul 1894 p3 in an obituary for Rev George English: “His last generous act was to present Combe Hay with a new site for our much needed Cemetery after taking pains in the selection of a suitable spot for the benefit of future generations.” From the Bath Chronicle of Thu 25 Apr 1895 p7 in a report on a Combe Hay vestry meeting: “Held on Thursday, the Rector in the chair. His late churchwarden, Dr. J. C. Smart, was much missed, and great regret was expressed at the loss the parish has suffered by his death. He took a lively interest

in the new cemetery for which he generously gave the site.”

There is also a volume entitled Inscriptions on the Gravestones and Monuments at Twerton-on-Avon, Combe Hay, Dunkerton, South Stoke & Langridge. The typewritten document with handwritten corrections has no author but was presented to Bath Reference Library by ‘the Misses Shickle’ and may have been complied by Rev Charles William Shickle (1841-1927), the one-time rector of Langridge. For Combe Hay there are 43 entries for memorials in the churchyard and a further 13 entries for wall memorials in the church. This volume would seem to have been produced before 1911 as a headstone with an inscription in 1891 is present but not its addition in 1911. This album features more than two hundred documents collected by barrister and historian Alexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916) by and about the Rev. Brian Bury Collins (1754-1807), an evangelical Anglican preacher closely associated with the Wesleys and Lady Huntingdon. In 1913 Broadley arranged and annotated the collection and had it bound. That same year he published transcriptions of many of the letters in the Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society.

Brian Bury Collins was known as Brian Bury and sometimes Brian Bury Bury, hence the reference to ‘Rev Collin Bury’ in the 1810 press notice of his widow’s death. Headstone. The Schickle volume has the surname as ‘Hinton’. However, reconciling with the burial register entres indicates that the surname should be ‘Weston’ and the text here has been adjusted accordingly. The death of death of Eliza Weston as 5-Jun-1841 is suspect as she was buried on 29-Jun-1841, suggesting that the date of death was 25-Jun-1841. The burial entry for Benjamin Weston has it that he was gardener at the rectory.
