WELCOME TO THE VERY FIRST COMAR BROCHURE

You might have already heard about Comar and might be wondering - what is it and what does it mean for both Mull Theatre and An Tobar? What difference will it make to the arts within our community and how will it affect you, our audience?

Well, the answer can be found within the name itself. Comar means confluence – it is a Gaelic word that represents coming together at the meeting place. What a perfect name for this partnership between these two well-loved organisations, now united as one. Comar itself is the meeting place, where our staff, venues, programme, and most importantly, our support for both artists and audiences across the board, come together.

As everyone knows, Mull punches well above its weight in terms of culture and creativity. Mull Theatre is one of Scotland’s busiest and most eclectic producing theatre companies and An Tobar as a venue frequently tops the list of many musicians and visual artists as their favourite place to work, exhibit and perform. With such a rich past, Comar inherits the very best for the future.

By bringing everything together in this way - music, theatre, visual art, and much more – with this joint brochure, and in this new venture, one thing is quite clear; there are many many exceptional artists that are both inspired by Mull, and thrilled to perform within our unique venues.

Comar will build on all of this exceptional work: the main music, visual art and theatre programmes, but it will also build on the thriving outreach and education work that happens throughout our community and also throughout the wider Argyll region.

So what is store for over the coming months…..

As we age we can become increasingly isolated and less intimate, often losing our connections to the world around us. But for some, they value the depth that their experiences bring to bear on their present lives. An honest and beautiful portrayal of older people’s lives, it explores taboos and challenges perceptions, using drama, dance, digital art and music. (age 14+)

2013 has already been a busy year for Mull Theatre, with Starbird, a beautiful new show for children and families created in association with Toto Tales, on a short Spring tour. This show will be back at Druimfin in the summer before heading off to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The next Mull Theatre production, opening in September, is Unspotted Snow, a new play commissioned by us from award-winning playwright Peter Arnott.

We are delighted to welcome Magnetic North to Druimfin for a residency in June to rehearse and open their fascinating new work, A Walk on the Edge of the World. These shows are the Mull Theatre’s own productions and work developed in association with us. We are also pleased to bring to Druimfin some of the very best visiting work from other theatre and dance companies in the country this season.

Forthcoming plans include extensive touring, collaborations with Theatre Gu Leor, Oran Mor, Rapture Theatre and Wildbird, a new Gaelic play by Catriona Lexy Campbell and further commissions from Nicola McCartney and Chris Lee.

A new production inspired by the act of walking. It begins with an illustrated talk about a week-long coastal walk and ends with the entire audience going for a walk together. The narrator leads the audience along the many paths his mind followed as he walked: the hidden secrets of the landscape and the constantly shifting border between land and sea bring understanding that the past is always with us.

Magnetic North is a theatre company based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed in 1999 by theatre and opera director Nicholas Bone to create and develop new work.

A Walk at the Edge of the World has been rehearsed and produced in residence at Druimfin in collaboration with the creative team at Mull Theatre.

Jo Mango and Her Band (Folk)An Tobar, 8.30pm

Tickets £10/£8

Hailing from Glasgow, and playing their own brand of indie/acoustic/folk, as heard on their latest album Murmuration.

Jo has collaborated with artists as diverse as David Byrne, Roddy Woomble and Teenage Fanclub, and is in Vashti Bunyan’s touring band on her worldwide tours.

“In the crowded field of contemporary folk, Murmuration is the living, breathing proof that Jo Mango is standing that bit taller than the rest.”

Nuala Kennedy & A.J. Roach (Traditional)An Tobar, 8.30pm

Tickets £10/£8

Nuala Kennedy is an Irish singer and flute player whose music features liltingly beautiful vocals, adventurous instrumentation, and an imaginative mix of influences. Although her repertoire is rooted in the traditional music of her native Ireland and adopted homeland of Scotland, Nuala has also gained critical attention for her eclectic cross-genre work. She has performed and recorded Will Oldham (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Norwegian musicians Frode Haltli and Vegar Vardal, and the late Canadian composer Oliver Schroer.

“Some albums reveal themselves in all their glory on first listening; others unpeel their layers with repeated exposure. Nuala Kennedy’s latest collection takes her flute, whistle and voice on a picaresque adventure...”

His offbeat compositions are performed with zest and spontaneity by the drummer’s brilliantly orchestrated sextet. Includes a short film about Raymond Scott.

SEP - NOVFred SchleyAn Tobar, Main Gallery

Opening night Thu 2 May, 6-8pm

Exhibition runs until 28 June

An internationally recognised painter from The Netherlands, Fred Schley’s work can be seen in collections both private and public, including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. In this exhibition, his work studies the atmospheric effects of light on the monumental landscape of Mull. Often taking an unconventional and enigmatic point of view, his paintings seem to capture the fleeting transience of the moment. “Fred Schley speaks to us through the subtle settling of the light – it’s colour and its shadows – on the colossal and mysterious animistic creatures, as mountains and rocks transformed and interpreted by his interior world, appear to us.” From The Visible and Hidden Presence in the Work of Fred Schley by Lidia Palumbi

Sam Jones - PossessionAn Tobar, Gallery 2

Exhibition runs until 28 June

An exhibition of monochrome landscape photography of the Isle of Mull.

Deirdre Nelson - Blow In BespokeAn Tobar, Main Gallery

Opening night Thu 4 July, 6pm-8pm

Exhibition runs until 29 August

Deirdre has been gathering stories from a range of “blow in” (incomer) residents on Mull, and has unearthed stories of past, present, place of origin and of life on the island.

Her work will be designed in collaboration with the people she has encountered, including a Bangladeshi waiter and the island ranger, and she will produce a range of functional works which will reflect the personalities and lives of those involved.

It is hoped the work reveal the diversity and cosmopolitan nature of modern life on the islands.
