Ingredients:• 20 participants• empty room• 21 chairs• 20 pillows• display board• scissors and magazines (optional)

Procedure:

1. During the first hour, gather participants into room & have them sit on chairs. Begin discussing the topic at hand, then break for a few minutes.

2. Bring the participants back in the room and pretend you’re a 5-year-old alien, and have them explain to you what the topic is for another hour. Break again.

3. In the third hour, have the participants lie on the floor, dim the lights, and play soothing music. Get them to a relaxed state, so they feel as if they’ve just woken up. Have them write down their earliest and most prominent memories of the topic (it’s o.k. if it’s the same).

4. Analyze data from the third hour. Look at the common messages, grammar and structure used in the participants’ statements.

Notes, tips and variations:• Steps 1 and 2 can be used interchangeably.• Another variation could be to replace step 1 with

step 2 and have participants sit on floor like children in a classroom during the second hour. Have participants cut images from magazines and make collages.

• The main focus is on the data collected during the third hour.
