Margaret Hetzer had a wonderful 95th birthday celebration on July 15. Mayor Deborah Cochran proclaimed it Margaret Hetzer Day and a group of Mary Jo Simpson’s after-school students visited the honoree. They brought her yellow roses and cards they had made and then sang “Happy Birthday.”

Margaret’s family also entertained her with a birthday luncheon pre-pared by her daughter’s family, Pam and Jack Gra-ham and Rusty of Bristol, Va.

The family hoped she would receive 95 birth-day cards; however, she had more than that - the last count was 143. This included best wishes from Sen. Richard Burr and Sen. Kay Hagan, in addi-tion to greetings from the White House.

The widow of Emmett Barney Hetzer, Margaret was born in Covington, Va., to Clarence and Ar-sie Walker. She moved to

Mount Airy in 1982 to be close to her sister, Chris-tine Hawks. At that time she became active in the VFW La-dies Auxiliary 2019 and the Pilot Moun-tain VFW La-dies Auxiliary. As a member of the Robert Smith Sunday School Class at Central United Methodist Church, she attended there as long as her health permitted. Margaret was also active in the Mount Airy Senior Citizens Club and the Widow’s Support Group.

Christine said her sister really appreciated friends and family for the flowers, cards and visits and for making her 95th birthday so special.

Martha Haynes McDowell was recent-ly honored at Salem United Methodist Church as a person from that church who has gone on to serve in the ministry.

The Rev. Bud Cameron said that Martha was ordained into the gospel ministry by the First Baptist Church in Laurinburg, where her husband, the Rev. C.F. McDow-ell is the minister. There she enjoys pro-viding pulpit supply, leading retreats and workshops and writing worship aids. She also serves on the Carolina Cooperative Baptist Fellowshp Coordinating Council.

It was at Salem that Martha, at the age

of 9, professed her faith in God before the Rev. L. P. Hederson and the congregation in 1970 and was baptized as a church mem-ber. She graduated from Mount Airy High School and Wingate College with a bach-elor of science degree in communication.

She and her husband have three children and live in Laurinburg. Her parents are Vera Haynes Combs of Mount Airy and the late William Haynes.

Cameron added, “We at Salem join her mother and her family in sharing our love with Martha for her faithfulness to God and in all that she does in His name.”

According to the museum’s Executive Director Matt Edwards about 100 patrons turned out for the opening of the exhibit on Friday night.

Reeves Community Center and the Surry County Health and Nu-trition Center recently recognized the latest winners of the Mount Airy’s Biggest Loser — Losing 4 Life Program.

Several local business-es formed small teams of five to eight people and competed in the special edition Corporate Team Challenge to see which company could lose the most Body Weight Per-centage. Participants included N.C. Foam Inc., Renfro, Central States

Manufacturing, Mount Airy City Employees, Workforce Carolina and N.C. Granite.

In the end, the Granite Guns from N.C. Granite took first place, followed by the Chunky Monkeys from Workforce Caro-lina. N.C. Granite team members were Chris Martin, Scott Lester, Marty Shelton, Corey Meadows and Johny Beamer. The team lost a total of 99 pounds.

Marty Shelton of N.C. Granite won the indi-vidual title, losing 42 pounds. Finishing in a close second was Keith

Hooker who lost 40 pounds.

This program is only open to returning par-ticipants and individuals with Body Mass Index (BMI) over 25. The next session begins Aug. 21.

Gary Harold named NCTA chairman

Gary and Vickie Harold at-tended the North Carolina

Trucking Association’s annual conference held at the Bal-lantyre Hotel and Lodge in

Charlotte. Gary was selected as the 2012 chairman of the

board. Speakers included Pat McCrory and Walter Dalton.

The NCTA is a trade associa-tion representing the trucking

industry since 1929. He is president of H&W Trucking

Company in Mount Airy. They have four children: Tyler Har-old, Whitney Hudson, Nathan

Atkins and Abigail Harold.

Cousins play in the pumpkin patch

Cousins pose in their granny and papa’s early pumpkin patch at Pinnacle. The twins, right, are one-year-old Montgomery and Mallory Brown, children of David and Stephanie Brown of Pilot Mountain and their cousin is Eden Marshall, whose parents are Brad and Amanda Marshall of Salisbury. Pumpkin seeds, planted last November, produced these pumpkins which matured by June 1 due to the mild winter.
