    August 22, 2015 (WEEK 25, MLS Game #250) 7:30 p.m. ET (TWC-OHIO, KMCI-38)

Long-time Midwestern rivals from the earliest days of Major League Soccer, Columbus Crew SC and Sporting Kansas City face off for the only time in league play this season when the clubs meet at Mapfre Stadium on Saturday evening. Crew SC extended their home undefeated run at midweek, coming back for a 2-2 draw with New York City FC. Sporting lost for the first time at home this year – the last team in MLS to suffer a home loss – with a 5-0 defeat by the San Jose Earthquakes at Sporting Park, also at midweek. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. Sporting have won each of the last five meetings between the teams, including both encounters a season ago.

SKC has a six-game undefeated streak alive vs. Crew SC; the Columbus victory came July 28, 2012, a 2-1 win at Sporting Park.

Crew SC have not defeated KC at home since a 1-0 win April 16, 2011. Sporting have won three times in their last four visits to Columbus, with one draw.

Coaches record: Gregg Berhalter vs. KC: P2 W0 L2 D0 … Peter Vermes vs. CLB: P12 W8 L3 D1 COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC continued their home undefeated run, coming back for a 2-2 draw with New York City FC on Wednesday evening at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC are in third place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points from 25 matches. LAST MATCH

Crew SC took the lead in the 24th minute. Ethan Finlay was able to drop his shoulder and turn around a defender on the right flank before driving a hard ball on the ground into the goalmouth, where Kei Kamara reached out a leg and redirected the cross past helpless NYC goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

But New York City FC leveled the match in the 57th minute. With his back to goal, David Villa played a perfect through ball to a darting Kwadwo Poku, and he calmly slotted a shot past Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark from inside the box.

Then 10 minutes later, NYCFC took the lead as Andrew Jacobson headed down an Andrea Pirlo corner kick directly to Poku, who gathered the ball and placed it perfectly into the bottom corner of the goal.

But Crew SC responded five minutes later. Cedrick Mabwati, who had come on as a substitute right after the NYCFC goal, immediately made a difference, bolting through the New York backline and touching the ball to Kamara, who deftly laid it back to Mabwati for a one-on-one finish past Saunders.

Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter made three changes to the team that took a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Harrison Afful and Waylon Francis came into the back four in place of Hector Jimenez and Chris Klute, and Justin Meram started out wide in place of Kristinn Steindorsson.

COLUMBUS CREW SC (4-2-3-1): Steve Clark - Harrison Afful (Hector Jimenez 60), Michael Parkhurst, Tyson Wahl, Waylon Francis - Wil Trapp, Tony Tchani - Ethan Finlay, Federico Higuain, Justin Meram (Cedrick Mabwati 67) - Kei Kamara.

TEAM NEWS Crew SC extended their home undefeated streak to six matches in league games, going 3-0-3 since a June 6

loss to Montréal. “We’ve got to realize there’s nine games left now and every point, every game matters. So that’s the mentality

we have to have, and that should be on everyone’s mind. The table’s tight, you can lose two games and the next thing you know you’re chasing the playoff race, and you can win two games and you can be right up there on the Supporters’ Shield,” said midfielder Ethan Finlay. “So that’s the mentality we’ve been looking at it and I think we’re disappointed in maybe dropping some points here, but we’re going to have a quick turnaround and that’s the exciting part.”

Kei Kamara scored his 18th goal of the season, his third in the last two matches, still leading the MLS Golden Boot standings, now by two goals ahead of Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco. Over the last six games, since June 15, Kamara has netted six goals, hitting the back of the net in five of those.

Ethan Finlay assisted on the Kamara goal, now with 13 assists for the season, one behind Philadelphia’s Cristian Maidana for the MLS league lead. In his last 48 league games, Finlay has scored 18 goals and added 20 assists, after recording no goals and no assists in his 40 MLS games.

Kamara and Finlay have assisted on each other’s goals on 10 of the 25 total MLS goals they’ve scored. Kamara collected an assist on the Mabwati goal, the eighth time in his MLS career that he has registered at least one goal and one assist in the same match, and the third time this season he has done it.

“We need to get the ball wide. We need to give [Kamara] more service because he can have more goals and he can keep scoring. It has got to be a team effort to get the ball in wide positions and get the ball in the box because once it’s in the box, he does the rest. He is dangerous and he is having a phenomenal year. We are proud of what he’s been doing,” said Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Making his third appearance in the last four matches, all off the substitutes’ bench, Cedrick Mabwati scored his first Crew SC and MLS goal.

“We have been seeing glimpses of that in training these last couple weeks. We know that he’s pushing. He got the goal on a fantastic effort but more importantly, I think, when you look at that overtime stretch he was aggressive, going at guys,” Berhalter said. “That’s the ability that he has. It was good to see that.”

Harrison Afful made his Crew SC and MLS debut, starting at right back and playing the opening 60 minutes. “It’s tough for guys. We’re in full swing and he’s been off for a while and I think he hung in there. It’s not an

easy job but he battled,” Berhalter said. “Yeah, he made a couple of mistakes but he also had a lot of positive things. He showed some ability. Overall, I’m happy with him.”

With the go-ahead corner kick goal from NYCFC, Crew SC have now allowed three goals out of their last five from set pieces. They’ve allowed seven goals for the season from deadball situations, one short of the league-high.

“I would say we’re working on it. We’re not happy with a) that we’re not scoring enough on set pieces and b) that we’re conceding. If you’re not scoring, you definitely can’t concede and we’ve done that lately,” Berhalter said. “It’s work, it’s attention to detail and it’s desire. You have to want to win that ball and have the heart and desire to clear the ball out of the air.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City saw their two-game winning run and home undefeated streak put to a stunning end, falling 5-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting are in third place in the Western Conference with 40 points from 23 matches. LAST MATCH

The Quakes took the lead less than three minutes into the match when Shea Salinas drove into the penalty area to the left of the goal, then cut the ball back to Cordell Cato for an easy finish past SKC goalkeeper Tim Melia from the center of the box.

The lead was doubled in the 16th minute when a push from KC fullback Chance Myers sent Quincy Amarikwa to the pitch in the middle of the area, and referee Jair Marrufo pointed straight to the spot. Chris Wondolowski put the resulting penalty coolly inside the right post.

Then it was 3-0 in the 27th when Anibal Godoy took a pretty backheel up the middle from Amarikwa, raced into the area, cut back to his left to shed a defender and buried his shot from just right of the penalty spot.

The Quakes fourth goal, in the 58th minute, was a near-repeat of the first: a deep drive from Salinas, the cross to the middle, the ball driven home from just a few yards out by Cato.

Three minutes later the score was 5-0. Fatai Alashe sent in a diagonal ball from the right side, and Wondolowski dove in front of a defender to spear a long header just past an outstretched foot and into the goal.

  • MLS GAME INFORMATION

Sporting finished the game a man down when midfielder Benny Feilhaber was shown a straight red card in the 75th minute after pulling down Quincy Amarikwa as the last man outside the penalty area.

SKC manager Peter Vermes made four changes to the team that came back for a 4-3 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Sporting Park. Chance Myers and Amadou Dia came in at fullback in place of Saad Abdul-Salaam and Jimmy Medranda, Amobi Okugo started in midfield for Soni Mustivar, and Jacob Peterson came into the side for Connor Hallisey.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Tim Melia - Chance Myers, Kevin Ellis, Matt Besler, Amadou Dia (Marcel de Jong 46) - Amobi Okugo (Mikey Lopez 46) - Paulo Nagamura (Graham Zusi 68), Benny Feilhaber (ejected 71) - Jacob Peterson, Dom Dwyer, Krisztian Nemeth.

TEAM NEWS Sporting became the final team in MLS to lose on their home ground this season, their league undefeated

streak at Sporting Park put to an end after 12 games, and their streak in all competitions at 16 games. “We were nonchalant. We didn't play together as a group. We weren't good in our individual defending and we

were very poor with the ball and with our entry balls out of the back. That allowed them to pick us off and at the end they did a great job of countering us. The difference between last game and this game is they finished three goals off in the first half,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “It was almost insurmountable for us to come back. You can't replicate that from week-to-week and I told that to the guys. It was just about us trying to minimize the bleeding with regards to us keeping the ball and being better with it. But we deserved to get beat like that because we didn't play well.”

Said goalkeeper Tim Melia: It's just a very disappointing performance from us, but this game's over. At the end of the day, it's our first home loss. We put this game behind us and use it as motivation to wake us up. We have a game in a few days against Columbus, another good team, on the road. This game doesn't mean anything if we win the next game. So that's the mentality we have to have.”

Sporting were shut out at the attacking end for just the fourth time this season, the first since May 23 – and lost by shutout for the first time this season. Each of their previous offensive shutouts ended in scoreless draws.

The five goals allowed by Sporting were two shy of the club record for a single league game, and the most the club has allowed ever at Sporting Park. The margin of victory against was the largest since their record defeat, 0-7 vs. Chicago Fire in 2001.

“When you get your butt kicked like this, you need to now reach down deep and get going. All this talk about us being good goes out the window, which is absolutely right,” said Vermes. “Nobody in this league has emerged as the team to beat. We are a long way from the end of this season. We have 11 games to play and no one has emerged as doing anything other than we have a lot of games left to play.”

Benny Feilhaber continued his streak at the only Sporting player to appear in every league match this season. But that streak will now end after he was sent off in the 71st minute vs. San Jose and will be suspended for the Columbus game.

Amobi Okugo made his first start with Sporting after arriving in a trade with Orlando City SC, playing the first 45 minutes in the deep-lying central midfield spot.

Amadou Dia returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Aug. 1, after coming off the substitutes’ bench each of the previous two matches – but he too came off for a substitute at the halftime interval.

Afful originally signed with the Black & Gold on July 30 after six seasons with Tunisian club Esperance Sportive de Tunis.

KAMARA EDGES CLOSER TO BLACK & GOLD SHOTS, SHOTS ON GOAL, GAME-WINNING GOAL RECORDSForward Kei Kamara recorded three shots (one on goal) against New York City FC on Wednesday, giving him 110 shots and 46 shots on goal for the 2015 Major League Soccer regular season ... Kamara is now six shots and one shot on goal shy of tying Stern John in 1998 for the all-time club single-season record in both categories ... John notched 116 shots and 47 shots on goal over that 1998 campaign, in which he scored a club-record 26 goals ... Kamara is also one game-winning goal shy of tying John’s six in 1998 for the all-time single-season record in that category.

KAMARA IN THE AIRAmong all Major League Soccer forwards, nobody has attempted or won more aerials than Crew SC’s Kei Kamara ... Kamara’s 200 aerials attempted are 46 more than the next closest player, and his 112 aerials won are likewise 35 more than the closest competitor ... San Jose’s Adam Jahn is the runner-up in both catego-ries ... Kamara’s 56% aerial success rate is second in all of MLS among players with at least 70 aerials attempted.

Tchani originally joined Crew SC via a trade from Toronto FC in exchange for Andy Iro and Leandre Griffit on July 15, 2011.

FINLAY NOTCHES ASSIST AGAINST NYC, TIES FOR SECOND IN MLSCrew SC midfielder Ethan Finlay registered an assist on Kei Kamara’s goal against New York City FC, pulling into a tie with Sporting Kansas City’s Benny Feilhaber for second in Major League Soccer, with 13 ... through 25 games this season, Finlay’s 13 assists are a new career single-season high, surpassing last season’s breakout total of seven assists ... Finlay’s four game-winning assists are also tied for the MLS high, as well as one short of the all-time club record (Guill-ermo Barros Schelotto in 2008, John Wilmar Perez in 2001 and Simon Elliott in 2004) ... Finlay also tied Jeff Cunningham in 2001 and Robert Warzycha in 2000 for the third-most single-season assists in Black & Gold history ... see below for a breakdown of this season’s MLS assist leaders:

TRAPP TALKS ABOUT RECOVERY FROM CONCUSSION SYMPTOMSAndrew King from MLSsoccer.com spoke with Crew SC midfielder Wil Trapp about his recovery from concussion symptoms and Trapp’s education process in working his way back onto the field ... a quote from King’s story from Trapp on serving as a resource to other players who have had a similar experience: “I just kind of tell them that you have to be as smart as you possibly can. There are going to be periods where it’s difficult. You don’t know if it’s the concussion speaking or just your lack of fitness – that was a problem I had in coming back. But first and foremost, you want to get that symptom load as low as you possibly can. … If you feel any craziness or any weird feelings, it’s not the right decision to be out there playing.”

LAMPSON’S KICK CANCER CUP MATCH TO BENEFIT THE LAMPSTRONG FOUNDATION IS SUNDAYCrew SC goalkeeper Matt Lampson is hosting the first annual LampStrong Foun-dation Kick Cancer Cup on Sunday, August 23 at MAPFRE Stadium to benefit his foundation ... the game is set to feature local celebrities playing, including Ohio State’s Maurice Clarett and Crew SC’s Dante Washington ... the game kicks-off at 1:00 p.m., and the two teams are set to be coached by Crew SC players Ethan Finlay and Emanuel Pogatetz ... KAMARA, FINLAY CHASING HISTORYShould Crew SC’s tandem of forward Kei Kamara and midfielder Ethan Finlay finish the season as the League’s leading goal-scorer and assist-getter, respec-tively, it would mark the first time since 2001 that the League leader in both goals and assists came from the same team ... the Miami Fusion accomplished the feat last in that 2001 season, with the Tampa Bay Mutiny the only other MLS team to accomplish it, in 2000 ... no current MLS club has ever completed a season boasting the League’s leading goal-scorer and assist-getter ... see below for a breakdown:

Season .......Club Goals Leader Goals Assists Leader Assists2001 ...........Miami Alex Pineda Chacon 19 Diego Serna 15 (tied for lead)2000 ...........Tampa Bay Mamadou Diallo 26 Carlos Valderrama 26

Additionally, Columbus has finished an MLS campaign with either the League’s leading goal-scorer or assist-getter on four different occasions ... only twice has Crew SC had a player lead the League outright in either category ... see below for a full list:
