President’s Message December 2020

So 2020 is drawing to a close and 2021 is just around the corner. I will be so glad to see 2020 in the rear view mirror! We are clamped down again trying to flatten the curve, hop-ing for better days in the near future. Thanks to those who participated in our COVID friendly election process. We had no nominations to add to the ballot and all ballots received voted for the incumbents. Glad to have these “rested” board members to work with again next year! Hope we can have our regular program soon. The New Year’s Day Drive is our traditional first event of the year. It will be COVID friendly based on the rules in force at that time!

Thanks to Donna for putting together our Zoom meet-ing on the regular November meeting night. Quite a few folks braved the technological intricacies of Zoom and we had about an hour of face-to-face chat. There may be more of these in the future, news will most probably come via email. One couple from Astoria was able to join us and Reid kept us entertained with his backdrops!

Peggy led us on a mostly familiar, but always fun, tour out Skyline to Scappoose. A small, but intrepid group braved the dry, chilly day and enjoyed the great views and twisty bits of Rocky Point Rd. Doug & Diane co-drove their Magnette, Tom & Sue got a little ways before they put the top up on the Midget, Glen & Jan in their pretty green Jaguar XJ6, us in our MGA Coupe and Peggy leading in her comfy Miata! Restaurants were open for inside dining, so we enjoyed a meal at Fultano’s in Scappoose and actual-ly headed home in near dark, sunset is getting earlier! Thanks, Peggy, for a fun day and a few new roads!

Seeing Doug & Diane’s Magnette reminded me that I have been busy with other things and have mostly ignored my Magnette project car. The door sills need welding and I did get a start on one of them. Made a short hop in the GT and on the way home I could feel that something had gone wrong. Got the hood up, did a compression check and found that two cylinders were dead. So that told me I had a blown head gasket. In getting the exhaust manifold off, I broke one of the studs and had quite a time getting it all back together, but it’s back on the road now. It’s good to be in the dry shop with good lighting, now I just need some heat!

Looking way forward, it’s not too early to start thinking about 2021 ABFM. MG will still be the featured marque so we want to have a great presentation. John Twist is plan-ning to be with us as our special guest. Ed & Ken will be working with the ABFM committee on overall activities. I

The Mayor Drives an MG Submitted by Keith Ansell

Go to this CNN web site........https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/05/politics/dog-mayor-rabbit-hash-kentucky-trnd/index.html

Every mayor of this small community since its found-ing has been a dog. The latest is a French bulldog.

It was a tight race. But the people of Rabbit Hash, Ken-tucky, have spoken -- the next mayor will be a 6-month-old French bulldog....

If You are Dealt Lemons, Make Lemonade! By Keith Ansell

We were denied our turn in 2020 at ABFM to show our pride in MG because of Covid 19…...BUT now we have eleven months to plan 2021 and Covid should be gone.

2019 had great presentations by the Mini club that has set a precedent that will take some work to beat. The MG clubs can do better. We’ve had two years to plan how we will do it. We have a great speaker for the banquet, now we have to prepare the field and our display.

I will present some ideas I have had about what we can do to make 2021 MG one of the best ABFMs ever.

How about instead of doing the “Town Square” we line the right side of the incoming road with a display of one of every model of MG we can find, arranged by year? There are a few pre-war cars in the Pacific Northwest to start a display. Then from the MGTC to the 1980 LE MGB lining the road? If we start NOW we could locate some great cars ( I know of a J2, TB and an M). There is a concours quality competition Elva MKIV (MGB in a beautiful fiberglass body), some vintage racing MGAs, MGBs and Midgets that we could get. It would shame the other makes as we have

First Tour of the Year—January 1 By Donna McNabb

Even if we have COVID to deal with, we can still have a nice drive on New Year’s Day. We will gather in a nice open space, wave and shout at each other from 6 feet distance with our face coverings on, and then head out for a 90 minute drive. We will end up in another open space and wave goodbye to go home.

This year’s destination is Clark County Washington. There’s lots of good scenery out that way—please join us. Drive any vehicle you are comfortable with. We usually have good (but cold) weather.

such a history and so many cars. We could have an area for “Custom” MG’s, we have a MG-TD pickup and a MGB Pickup, there is a MGA that I know of that belongs in the roadster show, a beautiful car, what else is out there??? At the corner on the right side we could have other cool stuff from MG. I’ll bet we could find someone with a TC/TD/TF engine, another with an “A” series engine, I have the Visible “B” engine and recently

was given a MGA-Twin Cam engine that we are working to make into a display engine. John Dutra has a Magnet engine that would be a great display (if he doesn’t have it in his car by then).

From a past ABFM I have a double sided MG Octagon that is about 3 foot across and 5 inches thick in biscuit and cream, it would look great on a pole above the display. There are banners from MG 2013 (Welcome to Oregon) and I have a MG X-Power banner………...vintage Castrol banner, “welcome race fans” and what else do you know of??

Banquet night we could find the outfit that did it for the Mini ABFM…..the food was about the best we have had for many years.

Our MG clubs ain’t broke, we could subsidize each MG entry with a little money, that could reduce the cost so more cars and people would attend. Or a few buck toward the banquet for club members?

Maybe the MG Clubs could make their own fliers and posters, again we got the money. Glen Enright created a fantastic poster that the clubs could use.

How about a gift for every MG entered, something simple to remind owners of how much the clubs support their members and maybe get a few to become members.

Lets all add to the ideas and get rolling NOW for a fab-ulous MG event.
