MISSION ACCOMPLISHED—2014 COLTS BASEBALL

All to often success in youth sports is measured only by wins ver-sus losses and that’s certainly important to the Chillicothe 757 Colts Baseball Program too. As Colts players move on to the next stage of their lives it is very obvious that wins/losses are only a small part of success in youth sports….. To quote one of the good guys that has since passed on:

“Post 757 has not only strived over the years to coach and teach fun-damental baseball but has encouraged the players to be aware of the importance of their high school GPA, work ethics and to be teacha-ble.”

- Dick Stewart

As we put the 2014 season to bed and look forward to the 46th consecutive year of the program it’s very rewarding to know that these young men have been provided a solid foundation for success by their parents, teachers, coaches, pastors and others. The Colts program is blessed to play a small role in the future success of these men!

FALL TRYOUTS NOW COMPLETE

We were very pleased with the talented baseball players that came out for the fall tryouts.

For our summer teams we conduct two sets of tryouts, in the fall where we identify the core players for our teams and then a second tryout in May to complete rosters.

THANK YOU to all of the players that tried out for the 2015 Colts Baseball Teams!

JADWIN COMMITTEE

Due to the continued growth of the Jadwin Memorial tournament, a Jadwin Committee will be started this fall to help with organizing and running the tournament.

The Jadwin Committee will consists of Jim’s family, Colts coaches, former players, parents, umpires and others.

There’s no shortage of help needed, anyone interested please contact the coaching staff.

4TH ANNUAL JADWIN MEMORIAL

The 4th Annual Jim Jadwin Memorial tournament is scheduled for June19-21, 2015. After another successful tournament we have been overwhelmed with American Legion programs eager to enter the tournament field.

Next week tournament information will be sent out to previous participating teams as well as the list of teams that asked to be contacted as details became final.

LIGHTING UP HOFFMAN FIELD

As featured 9/28/14 in the Chillicothe Gazette, the program is focused on bringing lights to Hoffman Field. Below are some highlights from the article with quotes from Colts GM Art DeVore who has been with Post 757 since its inception:

Discussions about putting up lights at Hoffman Field began when the field was first constructed in 1970.

With the addition of another lighted diamond in Chillicothe, the Colts' annual Jim Jadwin Memorial Tournament could draw a larger pool of teams.

"This is not an American Legion drive; this is a community project," DeVore said at a meeting of likely project volunteers.

Among those helping DeVore with the project are John Herrnstein, a former MLB player, and Ron Shoemaker, whose son, John, is a former Legion star and now a coach in the LA Dodgers organization.

The group still needs to pin down a budget for the project, but estimates range between $60,000 and $100,000 depending on how donated supplies and labor. The fundraising campaign will seek corporate and individual donations, as well as grant funding, DeVore said.

COLTS WINTER WORKOUTS

As we’ve done the last several years, the Colts will be conducting winter workouts on Sundays in December, January & February. This is open to current and former Colts players. Players not playing a winter sport are encouraged to attend.

WINTER HITTING LEAGUE

The Colts program will once again be participating in a fall hitting league at Mannino’s Grand Slam located in Dublin, OH. Players available to play Saturdays January 10—February 14 should contact their Colts coach.

COLTS 2014 FALL HARDBALLERS

The Colts Fall team is participating in the South Central Ohio HS Fall league this year as well as playing some other non-league teams. The Colts are focused on fundamentals and repetition in the fall with the number one priority being to help players get ready for their 2015 school and summer seasons.

We have a great group of kids that are putting in a lot of extra work this fall. We’ve had 4 coaches working with the fall team: Tom Barr, Chuck Greathouse, Bret Mavis & Brad Wilburn. The roster consists of the following 14 players from 8 different high schools:

Collin Cory Caleb Felts Braden Wilburn Nick Rinehart Dalton Conley Dylan Conley Zack Stapleton Evan Long Cody Hendershot Noah Bost Tyler McFerren Drew Barr Jonah Bilek Josh George

This group of players came together very quickly as one team and have worked very hard to improve as baseball players. Their work is paying off as we are seeing improvement in every player and the team is off to a 10-0 record!

The picture above is a birthday celebration for Tyler McFerren’s 17th birthday. Big thanks to Tyler’s Mom for bringing in pizza & cake for the fall team.
