CONFERENCES
BUS BARN NEWSUPCOMING EVENTS
A reminder from the Colton
School District Bus Garage:
Fall is here and as the days
continue to get shorter and
mornings darker, it is helpful for
parents to have some type of light
with students at their bus stop.
Reflective patches on coats help
too. This makes it easier for the
school bus drivers and other
drivers to see them. Let?s be safe
and visible this winter.
Thank you, from the Colton
School District Transportation
staff.

We have embarked upon a new program we call Walk to Read. After reviewing student data and considering the individual reading needs of each student, we have placed them in one of three reading programs designed to strengthen their reading skills. The reading programs we are currently implementing are Horizon's, Read Naturally, and Project Based Learning. These programs focus on basic reading skills, decoding/word attack, fluency and comprehension. The goal of the Horizon's program is to introduce basic reading strategies to improve phonemic awareness, decoding/word attack, as well as fluency. These skills give students the confidence to say, "I can read".The Read Naturally program is used to increase students's reading fluency, which strengthens a students ability to comprehend the text. In efforts to extend grade level work and challenge our students, teachers are also implementing a Project Based Learning program. Project based learning activities may include hands on experiences, Internet exploration, creative writing, and connections to real world. These activities are not uncommon in regular classrooms, however, this time set aside really allows students to dive deep into the activities. For more information see the principals message on the website.
