Medical Conditions
How does someone inherit it?• Color blindness is usually
passed down from mother to son.
• It is also a recessive X-sex-linked gene.
Possible Genotypes• The possible genotypes of
parents could be….
Chromosomal Abnormality• Color blindness is a
disease that is caused from either the “L” or “M” cone being defected or destroyed and cannot see color in the visible spectrum.
Karyotype • Colorblindness doesn’t
show in a karyotype because the mutation happens to the gene, not the chromosome.
Statistics • 10% of the male
population, and 0.5% of the female population is affected by color blindness in North America.
Examples
•If the father is color blind, and the mother isn’t, there is a 100% chance the daughter will be a carrier and 0% chance the son will be affected.
•If the daughter from the first example mates with a non-affected male, there is a 50% chance the daughter will be a carrier, and 50% the son will be affected.
Therapy• Test One: Two sets of
colored dots are set up, and the person is to try and pick out the pattern in it which is either a letter or number.
• Test Two: Colored chips are arranged in order according to how similar the colors are.
• The person is to try and arrange them in order to how similar the colors are.
Physical Symptoms• See some colors but not
all.• She only a few shades of a
color.• In some rare cases,
someone might only be able to see black and white.
Life Expectancy • There is no shorter life
expectancy.• Although not being able to
see the color of a traffic light could be treacherous……
Treatment• Some people say wearing
colored contacts help.• Wearing glasses that block
glares also help people out.
Personal Life
Everyday Life• Same as anyone else,
except for the fact that they may need there mommy’s to pick out there clothes for them!
Limitations• Traffic lights.• Noticing sunburns.• Being able to tell if meat is
done. • For children coloring
would be big.• Clothing choices.
The Cure! • Color blindness is
currently impossible because curing it would require some type of gene therapy which does not exist.
