ATHLETIC PRACTICE FIELDs AND HERITAGE GARDEN PROGRAM PLAN

COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY FORT COLLINS, COLORADO

July 5, 2016 Prepared by:

Colorado State University Facilities Management Department

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This document provides planning information for new outdoor practice fields and a Heritage Garden to be constructed between W. Pitkin and W. Lake St, directly west of the new Multipurpose Stadium. The fields are expected to be 125,000 gsf and the project includes tie-in to surrounding landscape and hardscape. The Heritage Garden is envisioned as an area that will celebrate and demonstrate CSU’s agricultural heritage, as well as providing a gateway to the existing arboretum. The overall schedule to complete project is 12 months, with an estimated cost of $2.5M-$4.0M. It is anticipated to be funded from either donations or stadium contingency funds.

The proposed project is envisioned as an opportunity to improve athletic operations by constructing new football practice fields directly west of the new stadium. On game days, the fields could be used for VIP events. The current football practice field at the corner of Shields St and South Dr could then be repurposed for NCAA women’s soccer. Women’s soccer is currently being played on Student Recreation fields, and the Rec Center needs them back to accommodate growth in their program. In anticipation of this project the existing Perennial Gardens have been relocated to an area adjacent to the University Center for the Arts.

2.0 JUSTIFICATION All football operations (locker rooms, equipment, training room and staff offices) will be moved to the new stadium upon completion. The current football practice field is approximately ½ mile from the new stadium, whereas the planned facility is directly adjacent. In addition, there will be the ability to use the new fields for VIP event space on game days, and there is a need to convert the current football practice field to Women’s Soccer.

3.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The practice field complex will consist of a synthetic turf area measuring approximately 340’ wide (east/west) by 385’ long (north/south). The synthetic turf area will contain one full football field with two end zones, and one half field with 2 end zones. The complex will be built to the

west of the new multipurpose stadium, on part of an existing parking lot and the old Perennial Gardens site. The Perennial Gardens were relocated to the University Center for the Arts in anticipation of this work. The Heritage Garden will be approximately 1.2 acres, for historical agricultural crop demonstration with interpretive signage and a pavilion.

for VIP events. The current football practice field at the corner of Shields St and South Dr could then be repurposed for NCAA women’s soccer. Women’s soccer is currently being played on Student Recreation fields, and the Rec Center needs them back to accommodate growth in their program. In anticipation of this project the existing Perennial Gardens have been relocated to an area adjacent to the University Center for the Arts, which is a much more visible location for the public. 5.0 FACILITIES NEEDS
