MINES ALMA MATER CLASS OF 2020

The Mines Alma Mater, to the tune of “Aura Lee,” is played during Commencement to acknowledge graduates’ transition from Mines students to Mines alumni.

Lyrics for the Mines Alma Mater were written by Lois Moessner Leonard, wife of Weldon I. Leonard, Engineer of Mines, 1949.

Raise your voices engineers, your devotion sing

To the greatest School of Mines, let the chorus ring

Hail to thee, CSM to our hearts most dear

Ev’ry miner lauds thy name and ev’ry engineer.

Honor, glory to thy name, these we pledge anew

While we live to sing thy fame, Alma Mater true

Hail to thee School of Mines, silver and blue

Ev’ry Miner sings thy praise, O Alma Mater true.

GRADUATE STUDENT ADDRESS

Rania Pommer, from Sugar Land, Texas, is graduating from Mines with a doctorate in geology. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in geology from Mines in 2016. After graduation, Rania plans to work in the petroleum industry with BPX Energy in Denver.

During her time at Mines, Rania is particularly proud of writing and self-publishing two children’s books aimed at getting kids (particularly young girls) interested in STEM topics. While she’s had to put “MD and Finn” on hold for a couple of years, she’s looking forward to getting back to writing on the side.

One of Rania’s favorite Mines memories is participating in the Three-Minute Thesis during the Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS) last year – and winning first place and People’s Choice. She loved hearing how other students distilled their research into bite-size presentations, learning about the different research happening across campus, and seeing the campuswide support of the research community.

Evan LimBachelor of Science, Computer Science

Evan Lim, from Littleton, Colorado, is graduating from Mines with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in business and entrepreneurship. After graduation, he plans to continue on at Mines and work toward a master’s degree in computer science.

Among Evan’s top accomplishments at Mines was the work he and his teammates did on their Senior Design project, the Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). The student-designed solution to automate monitoring freshwater reservoirs for Pinyon Environmental won first place overall in the Spring 2020 Design Showcase.

Evan’s favorite Mines memories are from last year’s E-Days, when he and his team competed in the cardboard boat race and won the best themed category. He’ll never forget floating down Clear Creek in the snow and actually staying afloat!

Lauren MillerBachelor of Science, Geological Engineering

Lauren Miller, from Clear Lake, Texas, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in geology and geological engineering. After graduation, she has an internship with ExxonMobil in Houston that will lead to a full-time position.

Looking back at her time at Mines, Lauren is especially proud of the work she completed during field session, as well as the collection of poetry she created with the support of Professor Toni Lefton. Ultimately, she is most proud of the times she told herself to put schoolwork aside for a moment and just go live – camping, climbing, hiking, cycling and running were what helped her thrive at Mines.

Lauren’s favorite Mines moments include the post-fieldwork card games with the whole Geology crew at Golden City Brewery, late-night crunch session parties in the computer lab in Berthoud Hall, and writing poetry with her McBride class.

Aspen RichardsBachelor of Science, Engineering Physics

Aspen Richards, from Morrison, Colorado, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics and a minor in computational and applied mathematics. After graduation, Aspen will stay at Mines for a master’s degree in mechanical engineering before entering the aerospace industry. At some point in her career, she hopes to join the Peace Corps.

Aspen studied abroad in Norway the fall of her junior year, an experience of which she is immensely proud. It was the first time she traveled alone and outside the United States, opening up opportunities to learn about other cultures and herself.

Aspen’s favorite Mines memories include this past fall when she participated in the M Climb with Blue Key Honor Society and led a group of first-years students up Mount Zion. She loved seeing everyone lined up along the road and the first-year students making friendships within their group.

Molly WallaceBachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering

Molly Wallace, from Newman, California, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and a minor in metallurgical and materials engineering. After graduation, she will move to Houston to work for OxyChem as a process engineer in their PVC plant.

During her time at Mines, Molly never walked anywhere on campus without seeing – and typically greeting – someone that she knew. That sense of community is her favorite thing about Mines and something she is proud to have been involved enough with students at every level to contribute to.

Molly’s favorite Mines memory is getting dressed up to celebrate her 21st birthday over brunch surrounded by her closest friends from Mines.

COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES

22 | SPRING COMMENCEMENT

Colorado School of Mines is a public university focused on science and engineering, dedicated to educating and inspiring students, advancing knowledge and innovating to address the great challenges society faces today—particularly those related to the Earth, energy and the environment.

Founded in 1874 with specialties in mining and metallurgy, Mines’ scope and mission has expanded to meet the needs of industry and society, producing distinctive graduates and revolutionary innovations and becoming a world leader in advancing sustainable use of the Earth’s resources.

Academic Regalia: Caps, Gowns and Hoods The academic dress worn by today’s graduates reflects a tradition begun in the late 12th century, when universities were first taking form, and codified in the U.S. in 1895 under the Academic Costume Code. Originally, the dress may have had a practical purpose—to keep the student warm in unheated buildings—but today it is ceremonial and divided into three parts: caps, gowns and hoods.

The traditional cap is the mortarboard with colored tassels to identify the graduate’s discipline or field of study. Graduates earning a PhD wear a silver tassel, Master of Science a yellow tassel, Master of Engineering an orange tassel and Bachelor of Science a navy and silver commemorative tassel.

Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed, but doctoral gowns are faced down the front with velvet and trimmed with three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet facing and bars are black or the color of the field of study.

Hoods are also black, lined with silver and blue, the official school colors. The velvet border identifies the field of study to which the degree pertains. Mines hoods have yellow velvet borders for masters of science, orange velvet borders for masters of engineering and blue velvet borders for doctors of philosophy.

Conferred Degrees Departmental degrees are awarded at Mines according to the order in which the department or program originally conferred a degree, dating back to the first Mines commencement in 1883, at which two mining degrees were awarded.

Silver DiplomasWhile the degrees granted by Mines are valuable and unique, so are the diplomas themselves. The Mines silver diploma is a long-standing tradition dating back to 1933, when Charles A. Hull engraved a silver diploma as a gift for his son, a recent graduate. The diploma caught the eye of then-President Melville F. Coolbaugh, who asked that silver diplomas be made for all Mines graduates.

Starting with the commencement of 1934, Mines began issuing silver diplomas, measuring 5 by 6 inches and etched in pure sterling silver. Creating these diplomas required two workers spending six weeks (or 500 hours) making 19 delicate etchings in each diploma.

Honor Cords and StolesAt Mines, we hold all of our graduates in high esteem and recognize their achievements at commencement. In addition to the traditional cap and gown regalia worn at this event, graduates may wear stoles and honor cords to recognize academic honors, honors programs and honor societies; an international affiliation; membership in Mines-recognized Greek letter societies; status as varsity student-athletes; and service as military and veteran students.

Honor cords signify specific academic achievement or membership in a recognized academic honor group or society. A graduation stole is a decorative vestment worn over the shoulders by students who are members of college organizations for the purpose of recognizing academic achievement or association with an international group or program.

A public research university with a global reach, engaging innovative thinkers to create solutions for today’s earth, energy and environmental challenges.

The Book: De Re Metallica The Mines faculty senate president leads the academic portion of the commencement procession, carrying a replica of the 16th-century treatise De Re Metallica. Widely regarded as the seminal text on mining and the science of metallurgy, this historic volume serves as a symbol of the body of knowledge shared by Mines’ faculty and students.

The book’s opening marks the start of the commencement ceremony and also recalls the beginning of the students’ education at the school. The ceremony’s end is signified by the closing of the book.

A first edition of De Re Metallica, written by Georg Bauer under the pseudonym Agricola and printed in 1556, resides in the vault of Mines’ Arthur Lakes Library, as does a subsequent edition printed in 1621. In addition to these original texts, the library also houses several copies of Herbert Hoover’s 1912 translation from Latin.

Presidential Medallion The silver medallion, worn only by the Mines president, was designed by Rex Bull, an emeritus professor in the George S. Ansell Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department, and cast by students using silver donated by the Mines Alumni Association. It was first used at George S. Ansell’s inauguration as the 13th president of the school on February 8, 1985.

University Mace The Mines faculty senate distinguished lecturer carries the mace, which has a rich history as a symbol of authority going back to the 13th century. In commencement processions, the mace is carried before the president and the dignitaries in the platform party. The mace’s core is a rosewood staff, covered by fitted brass and cast bronze, silver-plated and topped by Mines’ mascot, Blaster. Mines Professor Emeritus Robert Taylor executed the design and Mr. Emil Dangreau produced the finished standard with the official school seal photoengraved on the base of the staff.

ProspectorA retrospective memento, the Prospector is Mines’ yearbook and commemorates each school year with photos and articles detailing some of the best moments of the year. The Prospector was published for decades before taking a brief hiatus in the early 2000s.

I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three hundred pounds,

The college bell to mix it in and a clapper to stir it ‘round.

Like every honest fellow, I take my whiskey clear,

I’m a ramblin’ wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva engineer,

A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva engineer,

Like every honest fellow, I take my whiskey clear,

I’m a ramblin’ wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.

Hail, hail, the gang’s all here.

What the hell do we care as long as we get our share.

Hail, hail, the gang’s all here.

M-I-N-E-S

What the hell do we care now?
