Standings
East High Angels v Littleton Eagles
On as fine as a spring Colorado evening as you’re likely to see, Littleton Eagles swooped into East Angels
homegrounds, Heaven, with a will to rugby. Slightly more than an hour past Referee Tim Luscombe’s
opening whistle, and 11 trys in total later on, one side soared off on the wings of well-earned victory.
It did not start well for the travelers as a misplayed kickoff catch had an East scrum outside the Littleton 22
meter line. That set piece won, the Angels worked their way into their guests business district in three
pounding phases from breakdown until second row, C J Cade, snatched ball from out the loose and
stormed across goal for his grounding, flyhalf Jack Bock converted and East were up by seven in the early
goings.
Littleton roared back upfield at re-start, claiming the turnover inside East 10 meter line. A pair of hungry
rolls off the maul to stabilize the service platform and ball spun swiftly wide by halfback Kurt Werner found
flyer, Greg Pearson, with a bit of space and that was all the quick man required to dot the corner score
that made it 7-5 homeys with five minutes off the clock.
Now lads got down to it with territorial kicks by East, countering action from the capable Littleton back-
three, and turnovers begetting fast attacks all making for exciting rugby in the cooling night air.
East were to realize the next numbers as Cade, once again, proved unstoppable inclose, carrying a would-
be stopper into goal for the try that, along with Bock’s added deuce, extended the host margin to nine at
14-5 in the 11th minute.
Then it was Littleton’s chance to feature as their light and mobile forwards exacted the turnover and
rushed into East 22 meter zone and on down to the business district before Werner swift-tapped a penalty
awarded eight meters from goal and the quickster’s swervy little scamper enabled the cross-and-dot for
fullback Luke Ryan’s conversion and it tightened to 14-12 midway through the first half.
Littleton were back on attack within the Angles 22 when #10, Zach Melphy, scythed into space, crossed
and grounded the go-ahead score in the 18th minute; with Ryan’s conversion, 19-12 to Eagles.
Melphy was back in the zone half-dozen ticks on as he slipped a tackle five meters from goal, struggled
some for possession, and lunged over the paint to ground for Ryan’s completion and it was 24-14 Littleton
with 24 gone by.
Werner got Littleton’s last shout of the initial period, looping behind the scrum along the weak sideline
before stepping past a pair of defenders to score in the corner: 31-14 Eagles as Luscombe sounded the
break and the players went off for strategic enlightenment.
East were the serious rugby business in the first fifteen while Eagle owned the latter stages of the first half.
Quickfire service of Eagles’ American International College scholar awardee Werner, rapid distribution by
pivot Melphy, meant relentless front foot action and much offense by the visitors in the second, 15-
minute, segment.
The second stanza was all Littleton Eagles with formidable five-eighths, Cam Glon, slicing into goal for a try
converted by Ryan: 38-14 five minutes into the last half.
Eagles redoubtable hooker, Michael Thompson, was next on the scoresheet with a grounding at 42
minutes to make the tallies 43-14.
Melphy touched down his tryple two minutes before time: 48-14; and 8-man Takuma Matsutani finished
well to end scoring on the night and a final of 53-14 was recorded at Luscombe’s last blast.
