WHEN I RETURNED TO
Colorado at the end of
February for this fabulous
job, my husband, Chris,
remained in Kansas City
to sell our home—a task
that has not yet been
completed. But that’s
another story.
In the meantime, I’ve
been living with my sister-
in-law. She has gone above
and beyond the standard
hostess duties over the
past several months, and I
am forever grateful; our
family could never have
made this transition
without her generosity.
And she has a lovely home filled with lovely things. But as pretty and
clean and comfortable as it is, it’s her home, filled with her things.
I have to admit, I miss my things.
It feels a little inappropriate to say that. We’re not really supposed to
value things, are we? But I do. I’m not talking about basic stuff like
dishes or linens or lamps. I have missed the milk glass vases I inherited
from my grandmother, a quilt made from my late father’s work shirts
and the abstract painting we bought in Mexico on our 20th wedding
anniversary. These are the things I treasure and display where I can see
them every day. And they make me happy.
Chris and I have recently moved into a small apartment in Denver
while our Kansas City home languishes on the market. Downsizing gave
us the unique opportunity to decide which things were truly our
favorites. And I have to say, it was easier than I thought it would be.
Our August issue is all about beautiful, meaningful things. From “The
Goods,” which shows how you can mix antique furnishings with con-
temporary art and accessories (page 15), to our featured homes that all
contain exquisite art collections (starting on page 42), this issue is filled
with ideas to help you make the most of your collections. Because
every single thing you buy, collect or inherit should inspire happiness.

A Day at the Beach
A beach in the middle of the Rocky Mountains? You bet. Although completely manmade, the grounds of this Steamboat Springshome look completely natural, thanks to landscape archtect Scott Sones’s careful planning and knowledge of alpine-friendly plants.
27
Celebrate the parting daysof all-too-short summerwith a Steamboat Springslandscape that has everything—even a beach
DON’T BE FOOLED: this lush, serene landscape just 10 minutes out-side Steamboat Springs used to be a hay field. But the homeowners’ visionfor a tranquil outdoor space surrounding their new home led landscapearchitect Scott Sones to turn a once-blank meadow into a layered, naturallandscape in just three months.
The request for a mountain stream, waterfall and small lake—and theability to draw upon water sources on the property—was the starting pointfor this large project. Inspired by family trips to Cape Cod, Sones, whorecently merged his 15-year-old firm with Eagle County-based LandDesigns by Ellison to form Ceres+, developed the concept of a beach—right in the middle of the landlocked Rocky Mountains.

(above) Plantings include Miscanthus ornamental grass, alpine-friendly perennialsand more than 200 trees. “We like to plant large groves of aspen; it creates a natural sweep and sort of tucks the house in,” Sones says. (opposite) The stunningwaterfall and pond were created by David Duensing. “You must be able to standback and consider what it’s going to look like in a few years,” he says.
By building sand paths lined with ornamental grasses and “plantingpockets,” as well as several intimate seating areas, Sones created the feelingof a beachfront home. But where does one find enough sand to make ahigh-country beach? Sones got lucky at a quarry in Leadville.
The mountain stream that surrounds the home and the beautiful water-fall into which the stream feeds were conceptualized by Sones and broughtto life by designer David Duensing, who’s been constructing elaboratewater features all over the world for more than 20 years. For this project, hehauled in and arranged 100 tons of boulders to create a waterfall that looksas though it’s been there forever. “The key,” says Duensing, “is the randomplacement of the boulders. It’s not as easy as it looks; in fact, it’s an art.”
But that was the ultimate goal for both designers—to create the illusionthat the landscape and water features were there long before the home wasbuilt—and for that, the act of sculpting was worth the effort. “Most peoplehave no idea [the waterfall] was built,” says Duensing. “This was certainlyone of my most successful projects.”

Artful Elegance
Inspired by a top-notch

homage to European

Colorado Homes & Lifestyles: Tell us what the homeowner had in mind when she called you in.
Interior designer Ingrid Fretheim: The homeowner bought the show model of this condo building so it already hadseveral nice features. But she wanted to make it hers. In fact, we took out walls, totally redid all the bathrooms, and added a butler’s pantry. The homeowner’s keyword was “elegant.” So that’s what drove the design.
CH&L: What was the starting point for the design?
IF: The homeowner fell in love with the piece of art that’s now hanging in the dining room. (Amazingly, thewoman in the picture resembles her, but that’s just a coincidence.) She loved not only the subject matter but alsothe colors. We used that palette to pick the iridescent silk for the dining room chairs and the lavender crystals thathang from the chandelier. Lavender is one of her favorite colors. That picture also works beautifully with theChagall that hangs directly opposite it.
CH&L: Since the homeowner bought everything new, how did you choose furniture that would enhance the art?
IF: I didn’t. When you pick out art that you love, it works on its own merit. That said, the real key to making itstand out is paying attention to scale—in other words, selecting the right floor plan and size of furniture.
We chose high-end French reproduction furniture that was just the right size to frame the art visually. For thedesigner, it’s a skill. For the viewer, it just feels right.
BY SALLY STICH PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD
(above, left) The front entry sets the tone for the rest of this 6,000-square-foot condo, with its ornate Louis XV reproductionconsole, Niermann Weeks bench and silk-covered walls. Nothing in the space is antique, but high-quality reproductions, mir-rors and chandeliers create the feeling of European sophistication. (above, right) A clear end table by Alan Knight keeps theliving room feeling airy and adds a modern touch; the painting over the fireplace, Silver Chalice, is by Canadian artist JohanneCullen. (opposite) Designer Ingrid Fretheim creatively mixes carefully selected pieces. The Asian-inspired desk, by Julia Gray, is paired with a boldly upholstered William Switzer chair. The abstract painting in the breakfast room is by Ivy Jones.
The artwork at the head of the tableinspired the color scheme throughoutthe dining room. Purchased in PalmSprings, the painting—Jeanette PasinSloan’s Solace—picks up the colors inthe iridescent silk-covered WilliamSwitzer chairs. The ornate mirror, also by Switzer, plays dramatically off theunframed painting. (above, right) Anoriginal Chagall is displayed betweentwo slender table lamps. Crystals inlavender (the homeowner’s favoritecolor) hang from the Schonbeck chandelier. A bright white porcelain bowlsits atop a gorgeous cream lacquer-and-metal Niermann Weeks console.
European Elegance Five Ways to Add Grace To Your SpaceMIRRORS These easy-to-find jewels add depth and light to a room.
If you don’t have wall space, consider a piece of mirrored furniture.ANIMAL PRINTS A very European touch, using leopard, zebra or tiger
prints—great as floor coverings—can provide a sense of connection tothe natural world. Smaller elements like animal-print pillows or anottoman can keep the look subtle.
GREEK MOTIFS The Greeks knew beauty, and traditional designs, such asthe Greek key pattern, add “wow” to draperies or chair coverings.
A TOUCH OF GOLD Overdo the gilt and you’ve gone gaudy, but addjust a little gold leaf on a piece of furniture or some molding, and elegance reigns.
SYMMETRY European design has always relied heavily on symmetry(two table lamps, two busts, two sconces) as of way of composingspace and bringing order. Overdone symmetry, however, can evokethe coldness of military precision. The goal is to appease the eye andcreate calm instead of chaos.
CH&L: Tell us about the design principles at play when mixing
contemporary and classical art.
IF: Mix away. But also look for elements in one piece that con-verse with another nearby. Maybe the paintings share a certaincolor. Or maybe you’ve framed them similarly. Notice in thiscondo that some pieces are framed ornately, some more simply, some are merely canvases. There are no rules except what the eyetells you. We may, at some point, frame some of the unframedpieces and move them somewhere else. That’s the beauty of art—it can be changed or left alone.

(top) Fit for royalty, the master bedroom is serene and comfortable. A Murano chandelier hangs above thecanopied bed, with embossed leather head- and footboards designed by Nancy Corzine. To shake things up,Fretheim chose contemporary William Switzer nightstands. (above, left) Touches of gold continue in theglamorous master bath. (above, right) Opposite the bed is a custom wall of cabinets and a desk from ModaAntica. The mirrored doors hide a television.
45
CH&L: The space looks so European, but with an updated twist. Besides scale,
what did you look for in furniture and architectural details to make this home
classical yet fresh?
IF: We gravitated toward reproductions of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI becausethose periods of design have stood the test of time. The French have alwaysbeen at the forefront of European design, and there are many wonderful variations on the French aesthetic. The three King Louis styles, in particular, mean gold leaf, detailed ornamentation, luscious animal skins and sparklingchandeliers. And when you use reproductions, you must buy the best because ofthe attention to detail and craftsmanship. This condo pays homage to both ofthose qualities, resulting in a sense of classical beauty.
(above) A Matti Berglund painting, commissioned by the homeowner, creates the focalpoint in the sunroom. The chandelier is by David Iatesta; the chairs are by Minton-Spidell.(below) Outdoor furniture designed by Bruce Eicher, Inc., creates a comfy seating area, which is surrounded by potted plants in the style of a European patio.

Art and CraftA dark and dated
bungalow is
transformed into
a sleek, modern
space filled with
light and art
BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY J CURTIS
IT’S NOT EASY TO WEAVE TOGETHER THE OLD AND THE NEW.But the owner of this 1914 Boulder home wanted to create a dialoguebetween modern living and historic roots, so he hired architects E.J.Meade and Claire Jordan of Arch 11 and builder Rich Sands ofHammerwell, Inc. to make it happen. Walls came down, ceilings wereraised and windows greatly expanded to create a contemporary interior.“Our client wanted the living space to unfold from indoors to outdoors, with some memory of the Craftsman bungalow,” Meade says. WarmDouglas fir and an original brick fireplace speak to the vintage aesthetic;modern spaces, furnishings and a striking collection of regional, contem-porary art place the home squarely in the present.
Open spacesWhere the main level was once broken up into smaller spaces, it now flowsfrom living room to kitchen in a clean, unbroken sweep. “The direction ofthe wood floor helps elongate the space,” Jordan notes. Furniture-likekitchen cabinetry is raised on legs to keep the look feeling light. A bay window in the dining space was reinterpreted into a floor-to-ceilingexpanse of glass, while walls of windows and glass doors in the kitchenextend the connection to the outdoors. Clean-lined, neutral furnishingsfrom Room & Board, HW Home and Design Within Reach recede, allowing the art to pop, and also add warmth to the space.
Bobbi Walker of Walker Fine Art in Denver pulled together a diversemix of abstract and non-representational art for the home. “We didn’twant to compete with nature, but accentuate the vision of bringing theoutdoors in,” she says. Color-field pieces by Sabin Aell and MianiCarnevale add vibrancy to the kitchen, while the signature piece that hangsbetween the living and dining rooms—made by Roland Bernier of carvedwood letters covered with photographic images—provides color, texture, and drama.
48
Hints of the past“The house is a blend ofclean lines and comfortablematerials,” says builderRich Sands. That blend isespecially evident in theliving room, where theoriginal brick fireplace wasrefurbished and toppedwith a sleek wood mantel.A Ben Strawn abstract oilpainting pulls together allthe colors in the room.“The windows are a nod tothe original two-by-two-foot windows,” Meade says.“The small section on top isa little memory of what wasonce there.” A wood sculp-ture by Anne Shutan bringsout the rich tone of theDouglas fir floor and addsdrama to the fireplace.
Treetop retreatThe second floor addition, which replaced asmaller attic, is perched like a treehouse tocapture panoramic views of Boulder and theFlatirons. Clerestory windows above the bedmaintain privacy while allowing light tostream into the master bedroom. Neutral bed-ding and upholstery set a quiet tone and letnature become the focus of the room. SabinAell’s experimental photography of floralimages is framed in 100-year-old fence woodthat speaks to the homeowner’s interest inrecycling. “I always recommend very still ormeditative art to bring a sense of peace to abedroom,” gallery owner Bobbi Walker says.
The upstairs office is wrapped in windowson three sides, offering views from the mountains to the eastern plains. A built-indesk and bookshelves help keep order, whileartwork offers a relaxing counterpoint. “Byplacing sculpture [by Anne Shutan] on thedesk, the room becomes more livable and notjust a functional space,” Walker says. “Abovethe sofa, we chose a whimsical mixed-mediapiece by Don Quade with neutral colors, shapes and forms to add serenity.”
Outdoor connectionSet at the base of Flagstaff Mountain, the house is on a spacious dou-ble lot. The rectangular form of the addition is a clear departure fromthe original clipped gable roof; a new stucco finish contrasts with theold brick. “We are firm believers in a real distinction between old andnew, where the passage of time is understood,” Meade says. “We areunapologetic in the contrast of geometries.” The rear facade bringstogether the original brick-and-stone walls with large expanses ofglass. “The old bones are still there and what was added serves thespace like an exclamation point,” Sands explains.
Landscape architect Luke Sanzone planted a green roof of grassesand wild iris atop the dining room and added new landscape elements to the venerable fruit trees in the yard. A bronze floralsculpture by James Dixon “looks like it grew under the tree as part ofthe landscape,” Walker says. “The scale is perfect.” Further back, asteel sculpture by Mark Castator anchors the garden with height, weight and a bit of urban punch.

Soft color blendswith neutral fabrics to createa cozy frameworkfor cherishedantiques andcontemporary art
BY PATRICK SORAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD
WHEN MOST INTERIOR DESIGNERSsay they start with a painting, they usually meanthey take a piece of art and select colors from itto create the color story for a room. That’s notthe case with Sandra Reichborn-Kjennerud,Denver-based designer and art consultant. When she starts with painting, she literallystarts with painting—buckets of paint and a crewwith brushes in hand. “I never pick paint colorfrom art,” she insists. “The art stands by itself.”
The eye-popping red entry doorhints at the brilliance of the art within. The reds in the Amy Metierpainting collude with Martha Daniels’sculpture, Red Nike, and the lacquered walls of the dining room to bring fresh life to this historichome. The dining room furniture isfrom Henkel Harris.
54
When choosing colors for her clients, Reichborn-Kjennerud takesan intuitive approach. She looks at the furnishings they will be bring-ing into their new rooms. What have they already chosen to live with? What hues seem to resonate with them based on existing fabrics, rugsand accessories? From this the designer makes a perceptive leap intoher clients’ psyche. “All of us have a palette of colors that we loveinside our heads,” she says. “I discover what’s on that palette.” Thenshe works to select colors from that inner sense, knowing that anyfuture art they buy will fit right in.
The process works. Reichborn-Kjennerud selected paint colorsfor this historic Denver home, for instance, that would create the perfect landscape for both furniture and art. The buttery ecru shechose for the entry, living area and sunroom is a hue similar to oneshe has often paired successfully with traditional furniture. She shifted to a slightly warmer tone for the kitchen, breakfast nook andbedrooms to accompany Chinese antiques. And the dining room? “Iknew I wanted a red lacquer so I went to my manicurist,” she chuckles. Benjamin Moore matched an Orly nail polish color called“Forever Crimson.”
(above) The house has a classic Georgian planwith the addition of an arch-windowed solariumsupporting a deck off the master bedroom.(right) Stephen Dinsmore’s This Side of the Riverdominates the living room’s west wall. The ownerselected landscape paintings for the living roomfor their soothing quality, and because the largepaintings fit the expansive wall area.
(above) The quiet wall color andtreasured furniture create a cozyfeeling in the living room. Beneaththe coffee table are two antiqueTibetan boxes that the owner uses to store her children’s art supplies. (opposite, clockwise from top left) The dining room is furnished with traditional furnitureand a crystal chandelier, brought up to the moment by contemporary art. In a cornerof the entry hall, a Lauri LynnxeMurphy piece is paired with anantique Chinese chest. AmyMetier’s Secondary Light anchorsthe second-level landing, and a chandelier adds drama to the smallspace. The island carries the redmotif into the kitchen; halogenpendants add sparkle.
56
{{A New HistorySandra Reichborn-Kjennerud, a long-time collector and art consultant, offers advice about living with antiques:Simply the Best Buy the best antiques you can afford. That
might mean trolling garage sales during your twenties orbidding at auction as your earning power expands. Owninghigh-quality pieces enhances your love of them—and theywill always hold their value.
Not So Fussy Reichborn-Kjennerud has two words of advicefor antique owners: use them. Don’t think of your pieces asrare stow-away items; think of them as part of the house.Plus, with daily use, older pieces take on a wonderful patina.
Hang On When a piece begins to lose its thrill after a few years, don’t get rid of it. Reichborn-Kjennerud suggests storing it fora while; if you liked it once you’ll probably like it again. You canrefinish and reupholster a piece after a couple years, and it willfeel new—er, old—again, but freshly repurposed.
Soft Touch Caring for antiques can feel burdensome, and inColorado’s dry climate things are likely to have cracks. Makesure that the furniture you buy has been in the state for awhile, so you can detect any damage. To care for old wood,Reichborn-Kjennerud suggests dabbing it with a barely-moistsoft cloth, then quickly wiping away any moisture left behind.

(left) Homeowner and designer agree that while antiques are indeed precious theyshould also be useful. Collected over many years, the Chinese table and chairs are
used for breakfast every morning and homework every night. (above) The sunroommixes bright liveliness and cozy comfort. Window coverings are Brunschwig & Fils
Pillars of India cotton; artwork is by Joellyn Duesberry and Robert Kelly.
59
After the painting was done, the homeowner set her furniture in place andhung the art. Right away, everything blended beautifully; elements comple-mented each other without competing. “I didn’t have that sense of being trulyhome until the paintings were hung,” the homeowner says. “The art is such apart of our family.”
Homeowner and designer both agree that contemporary art makes abrilliant counterpoint to antique furniture and traditional fabrics. “[Thatmix] creates an edge,” says Reichborn-Kjennerud. “It says, ‘wow.’” Thishomeowner’s inner palette seems to guide her to Colorado artists; manyworks are by Amy Metier, Emilio Lobato and Stephen Dinsmore, all represented at William Havu Gallery in downtown Denver.
The designer’s strategy works similarly for fabrics and lighting. For thisclient, who already owned much of her furniture, Reichborn-Kjennerudselected fresh upholstery and window coverings. She gathered dozens of
samples from sources at the Denver Design District, edited them based onher knowledge of the client, and then together they made final selections.Lighting was selected from Trog de Lights, a local showroom that importstraditional European-style fixtures from South America.
Adding to her collection of new art and old furniture, the homeownermixed in Chinese antiques and ceramics. Her father spent time in Chinaduring World War II and passed on his passion for the culture to his children. She has been collecting for years, but has avoided the pitfall ofpurchasing pieces too precious to use day to day. The family draws yoke-back chairs up to a carved elm table for breakfast. And in the living room, two antique Tibetan chests contain art supplies. Art and antiques bringmeaning into their everyday life, the homeowner says: “These pieces giveme and my children an appreciation of what came before us, and of howdifferent people have lived and created things in the world.”

STARS 2011 STEAMBOAT WINE FESTIVAL BENEFICIARY
STEAMBOAT ADAPTIVE RECREATIONAL SPORTS’ (STARS) mission is to empower and enrich the lives of
people with physical or cognitive disabilities in Colorado’s
Yampa Valley and beyond by providing them with recre-
ational opportunities. The organization began in 2006 as an
adaptive winter ski program, and today offers winter and
summer skiing, biking and kayaking programs, as well as
numerous specialized adaptive recreational sports camps
throughout the year. Participating in recreational sports
gives people with disabilities a chance to be on an equal play-
ing field with their able-bodied peers, and to experience fun,
healthy activities.
Last year, STARS’ 120 volunteers and instructors provided
more than 300 winter participants with 1,000-plus days of
adaptive ski lessons. In 2011, The Steamboat Wine Festival
will donate 5 percent of ticket sales and 100 percent of auc-
tion proceeds to this important nonprofit organization.

Distinctly HistoricLiving in one of
Denver’s historic
neighborhoods can
be pure pleasure, but
know the pros and
cons before you buy
BY PATRICK SORAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSEPH FLORES
ALTHOUGH DENVER OFFERS A STUNNING VARIETY of established neighborhoodsand old houses, the city has set aside 51 districts as being so architecturally significant they deservespecial treatment. “Historically designated neighborhoods are full of wonderful older homes,” saysreal estate agent Merlin Parker with Home Real Estate. “And no one can ever ruin them.”
These historic districts—some barely comprising a full block, others encompassing entireneighborhoods—are protected by law from being changed in any way without the approval ofDenver’s Landmark Preservation Commission.
Neighborhoods become districts in a multi-step process, beginning with a few passionateneighbors taking pictures and collecting historic data, and ending with a formal applicationprocess and hearings with the Landmark Preservation Commission, the Denver Planning Boardand the City Council. (You can learn more about this process by visiting denvergov.org.)
So what are the pros and cons of buying into one of these exclusive enclaves? The houses themselves offer the biggest upside. They’re old. They have history and personality.
Many are awash in hardwood and high ceilings, paneling and pantries. More importantly, no onecan ever wreck the value or the visuals by building an odd addition or popping a top next door.
For the downside, look at the opposite face of the same coin. Anytime you want to do anythingto the exterior of your own home—even put on a new roof—you must fill out forms and submitthem to the Commission, which can lead to several weeks (or even months) of lag time, dependingon the complexity of the issues. Commission members can often be history-loving nitpickers. For instance, while homeowners in standard neighborhoods may choose any replacement window

they want, new windows in these districts must be appropriate to the historicdesign, which can drive up the cost significantly.
But while repairs and upgrades might burden the bank, historic-homeowners can breathe easy knowing the value of their gem isn’t as susceptibleto dips in the market as conventional homes may be. From an investment perspective, these neighborhoods are rock solid. “Historic homes are laborsof love,” says Parker. “People move in and never leave.” Which means thereare few opportunities to buy. “The recession has hit everyone,” he says, “butthese areas held a lot of their value.”
If buying a slice of the past is sounding like a good idea, turn to thesebeloved historic districts.
HUMBOLDT ISLAND, COUNTRY CLUB AND 7TH AVE. These neighbor-hoods represent the grandes dames of Denver’s historic districts. Statelyhomes by important local architects such as Jacques Benedict and FrankEdbrooke flank tree-lined, flagstone sidewalks. Each is perfectly perchedbetween the hustle and bustle of downtown and the chic shops of CherryCreek. “Two words—tranquil and elegant,” Parker says.
CURTIS PARK Urban hipsters with a penchant for Queen Anne painted-lady homes find themselves hopping on the light rail for the short commute downtown from these sometimes-gritty, but on-the-mend districts north of downtown. Seven little historic enclaves havebeen designated here since 1995, and another is in the works.
HIGHLANDS The Highlands neighborhood also contains a number of historic districts within its broader borders. The advantages here are thedazzling views of downtown and the mountains, the eclectic mix of Victorian and bungalow architectural styles, and some of the best restaurants in town. Plus, Sloan’s Lake is within skipping distance.
ALAMO PLACITA “The best kept secret in Denver,” says Parker. Here,bungalow-style homes with loads of built-ins surround the flower-bedecked acreage of Alamo Placita Park on Speer Boulevard betweenOgden and Emerson Streets.

In 2011, the Durango Arts Center
sponsored its first 10-Minute Play Contest.
Referred to as the “haiku of the American
stage,” 10-minute plays have become a
fun genre for today’s audiences and play-
wrights. The Center will perform the five
finalists’ plays on September 16 and 17.
Although coloratura soprano Dolores
Mae Wilson performed all over the world,
she is best known for originating the title
role in the world premiere of Douglas
Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe at
Colorado’s Central City Opera in 1956.
After a $92 million overhaul in 2005,
Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House has
become renowned as one of the world’s
finest acoustical venues. The sound is so
good that performers don’t need (or use)
microphones to carry their voices to every
single one of the 2,225 seats.
Seventy-five years ago, in a resort town
with a population of 35,000, philanthropist
Alice Bemis Taylor financed the opening
of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts
Center—one of the first institutions in the
country to offer facilities for both the
visual and performing arts.
While other symphony orchestras
around the country may be struggling,
the Colorado Symphony Orchestra is
reporting record-breaking ticket sales.
Every 21-week season, approximately
220,000 patrons get gussied up to hear
a wide variety of performances, including
the star-studded Pops Series.
After naming Red Rocks Amphitheatre
the “Best Small Outdoor Venue” for eleven
years straight, Pollstar magazine eliminated
the venue from the running. The award is
now called the Red Rocks Award.
The Denver Performing Arts Complex
spans four city blocks (12 acres) and
features 10 performance spaces
connected by an 80-foot-tall glass roof.
It is the world’s largest performing arts
facility under one roof.
Colorado’s performing arts
Denver has long been a place of culture,
hosting a performance of Shakespeare’s
Macbeth in the 1860s before the city even
had a school or a hospital to its name.
Not far away, the Central City Opera house
opened its doors in 1878, making it the
fifth oldest opera program in the nation.
Built by local publishing giant Walter
Walker in 1923, the Avalon Theatre in
Grand Junction has hosted such colorful
artists as John Philip Sousa, Al Jolson
and Lyle Lovett.
Having just concluded its 50th season,
the Colorado Ballet is a nationally recog-
nized regional dance company that was
conceived as a ballet school by Denver
natives Freidann Parker and Lillian Covillo.
The Colorado Ballet Academy continues
today, honing the skills of future ballerinas.
