June - July

The entry form for this year's Colorado Blues Challenge will be on our website, www.coloradoblues.org very soon. Remember, any act entering the challenge must be a business member of the Colorado Blues Society as well. Any further inquiries concerning the Colorado Blues Challenge can be directed to the IBC Chair, Kyle Deibler at [email protected].

ORI NAFTALY BAND COLORADO DEBUT The Ori Naftaly band became the first Israeli band to reach the Semi Finals in the International Blues Challenge competition (IBC) in Memphis this year. At the IBCs the band was definitely a fan favorite and actually sold the largest amount of CD's during IBC week. Along with cheering for our own 3rd place winner Dan Treanor & Afrosippi featuring Erica Brown, the Colorado delegation adopted the Ori Naftaly Band as well. The band clearly made a bunch of Colorado Blues Society friends and are now playing here in Colorado for the 1st time with shows at the Boulder Outlook (Fri June 21) and the Winter Park Pub (Sat June 22).

The album they sold in Memphis even had an old CBS friend on it - Tempa Singer- who did several songs with Ori & the Band. They have now released their 2nd CD--"Happy For Good"--and it's a killer, consisting of eight new original songs. AND, these are great people,

Page 3: Colorado Blues Society - Bandzooglecontent.bandzoogle.com/users/ColoradoBluesSociety/... · Bad Brad and the Fat Cats featuring Nic Clark as their CD, "Eyes on the Prize," has been

not just great performers. They heard about the fires here in Colorado and quickly have volunteered to help at a Jewish camp damaged by the Black Canyon fire. Try and catch these newest members of the Colorado Blues Society, and our 1st International member. They are a tight young band steeped in the blues with Ori offering up killer licks on his axe and Eleanor Tsaig's voice is something you won't ever forget. You will be hearing a lot more from this band!

FREE TIX to the BLUE STAR FESTIVAL!! FREE CBS MEMBERSHIPS!! HOW????? Free tickets for a major Festival? Free memberships to Colorado Blues Society? Yep it's true! CBS is launching a giant instrument drive to help out Blue Star Connection. In case you didn't know, Blue Star is a local organization started by Grand County Blues Society that puts musical instruments into the hands of kids with cancer and life threatening diseases. Musical instruments become a major part of their healing therapy. BSC has provided kids with instruments, as well as furnishing entire Therapy rooms in hospitals.

The problem is BSC needs more instruments. BSC can use most any instrument as long as it is in working order and in good shape. So here is the deal on how you can help and get yourself a nice perk, as well as getting that good feeling from helping these kids. You can donate two ways:

FREE FESTIVAL TICKETS--donate your instrument at the Blue Star Festival in Littleton on August 3 and get FREE admission into the Festival!!! The BSF has Paul Thorn, Jimmy Hall/Reese Wynans/Kate Moss/Andy Irvine/Scotty Rivera/Greg Martin(Kentucky Headhunters), Curtis Salgado, Ryan McGarvey, Steepwater Band, Mary Louise Lee Band, Paula Nelson (Willie's daughter) Austin Young Band, Dustin Pittsley, Cedar Avenue Blues Band with Robert Wilson.

FREE 1 Year CBS MEMBERSHIP--If you aren't going to the Festival, you can also get a hold of us here at CBS ([email protected] or [email protected]) and we will give you a FREE individual membership to the Colorado Blues Society ( $30 value). Give us your address and we'll even arrange the pickup - if we have a Board member in the area. And you bands/musicians looking for a Business membership for the IBC, we will give you that membership for two or more working instruments.

BSC can always use your cash donations as well, and if want to do that, we will gladly take your checks! Think of this like a canned food drive at Christmas except with musical instruments. Get those unused instruments out of your basement and closets and put them into the hands of some kids who will play the heck out of them. BSC is proof that music can really change lives...and save lives. Its healing powers are amazing!

And don't forget Grand County Blue's Society presents Blues From the Top next weekend June 28-29-30 in beautiful downtown Winter park. BFTT was voted the Favorite Blues Festival at this year's CBS Members Choice Awards. The line-up includes: Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, Mud Morganfield, Lucky Peterson (w/Shawn Kellerman), Ronnie Baker Brooks, Albert Castiglia, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Sena Ehrnhardt, and Southern Hospitality (JP Soars, Damon Fowler, Victor Wainwright), Austin Young, and Zac Harmon. The fun starts Friday with prefest shows in the square plus a showcase at Smoking Moes

Friday night. There are also shows in downtown Winter Park Saturday night after the festival.

CBS BEST SELF-PRODUCED CD (BSPCD) COMPETITION

The Colorado Blues Society is announcing its, Best Self-Produced CD competition. The winning CD will be the CBS entry into the Blues Foundation's BSPCD competition. The IBC has been the measure of excellence for live performances while the Best Self Produced CD (BSPCD) honors excellence achieved in the studio. Acts can be bands, solo acts, duo acts, trios, full choirs or any other combination. The purpose of this award is to assist our local Blues musicians in the pursuit of their professional goals.

The local entry DEADLINE is September 20, 2013 so that we have time to select our winner, and get copies to Memphis to meet their deadline.

Compilations are not eligible. Singer, band, society or local producer may produce the actual CD as long as the performer is a singer, band or other individual entity. Recordings with established or "known" producers within the industry are eligible as long as the recording is on the artist's independent label and not on an established national blues label. If a recording was produced independently but an established blues label has purchased the master for distribution, the recording is still eligible until such time as the established blues label releases the recording.

By the way, the first CBS entry, in 2010, Crime Scene Queen by The Informants took 1st place in the Memphis BSPCD competition. For information on how to enter and complete rules contact [email protected].

LOCAL CD ENTERED INTO THE BMA NOMINATION PROCESS

Bad Brad and the Fat Cats featuring Nic Clark as their CD, "Eyes on the Prize," has been entered into the nomination process for the 2014 BMAs. There is a definite Colorado Blues Society/IBC history to the performers on this CD. Bad Brad & the Fat Cats are CBS members and Brad is on the CBS Board of Directors. In Feb 2012, CBS sent the Fat Cats to Memphis as our Youth Showcase performers giving Brad his 1st taste of Beale Street. The rhythm section of Jodie Woodard and Peter Gregory were members of Boa & the Constrictors, the 2010 CBS entry in Memphis. And Nic Clark had his initial success with Memphis IBC finalist, Another Kind of Magick, a band that CBS helped discover and promote with letters to Wyoming newspapers and finally convincing the Wyoming Jazz & Blues Society to participate in the IBC with AKM as their 1st ever IBC entry. Good luck to the band and their CD!

CBS would like to encourage any and all Colorado musicians to submit their CDs to the Blues Foundation for consideration into their nomination process. The details can be found in the BMA section of the blues.org website under the Nomination process and pretty much anyone can submit for a nomination. The CD must have been released after Nov.1, 2012. This is not to be confused with the Colorado Blues Society Best Self Produced CD competition that is mentioned above. They are two separate competitions and it would be a good idea for all local musicians to enter their CDs into BOTH as long as they meet the criteria for both.

DID YOU KNOW?

John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson integrated the blues harmonica into blues singing, so that the two became one continuous voice. His Skinny Woman (1937), Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (1937) and Hoodoo Hoodoo (1946) became early blues standards.

Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter was discovered in 1933 in a prison by Alan Lomax. He later became a celebrity of New York's folk revival, becoming the symbolic bridge between black and white folk music. Leadbelly popularized Goodnight Irene (1933), Midnight Special (1934), Rock Island Line (1936), Pick A Bale Of Cotton (1940) and Cottonfields (1941).

The word "mojo" comes from the hoodoo tradition. It's a cloth bag worn under the clothes as a charm, often times containing herbs, curios, animal bones and other items. A mojo is believed to convey good luck, protect the wearer from evil, or to attract money or love. Obviously it's a good idea to "have your mojo working." Also known as a ,"mojo hand" or, in Louisiana, as a "gri-gri," the charm is referred to often in blues songs. Mojo also refers to male virility, another common blues subject.
