Colors that you LOVE! They should be rewarding both visually and
emotionally. Don’t worry about the latest trends and what’s
in or out. Everyone has their own natural color palette !
Blue
• Overwhelmingly a favorite • Serene, classic, conservative• Nautical• Sky , heaven, infinity• If you like it, you love it!
Red
• Exciting and energetic• Power and strength• Hot, seductive, passionate• Aggressive and dangerous
Yellow
• Happiness, light, sun• Friendly, joyful, open • Warms a space• Lifts spirits• Its sister Gold conveys wealth & success
Orange
• Strong associations: juvenile, pumpkins, warning• Radiant, vibrant, friendly• Harvest and autumn• Spiritual color in other countries
Green
•Refreshing, tranquil, and calm• Pervasive in nature makes it a natural backdrop for interiors• Relaxes retina•‘Institutional color’
Purple
• Balances blue & red• Regal, sophisticated, rich• Dignified, spiritual• Mysterious and exotic
Neutrals
• Taupe, beige, creams, grays
• Adds flexibility

Light Effects Color
• Natural vs. Artificial light
• Incandescent light – intensifies warm colors
• CFLs – amplifies cool colors
• Halogen – very bright light
• LED – closest to natural light

• Color changes as day progresses
• Weather can change the appearance of colors
• Direction of room (east, etc.) effects color
Tips
• Use paint swatches or paint boards
• View colors in various light
• Darker values and warmer colors come toward you
• Lighter and cooler colors recede
Tips
• Don’t forget floors, ceilings, window treatments, counters, backsplashes
• Mix textures to modulate your color palette & add interest
• Support the natural focal point
• Use pillows, throws & similar to add flexibility in adding color
