Mintel Beauty & Personal Care forecasts key beauty trend for 2014

Home / Press Centre / Beauty and Personal Care / Mintel Beauty & Personal Care forecasts Mixologiste as key beauty trend for 2014

In Beauty and Personal Care // on December 10th, 2013

Mixologiste. Blurred lines between beauty technology are becoming increasingly common, with overlaps between skincare, hair care and colour cosmetics. Combining the most exciting technology and marketing from more than one category, manufacturers are creating new combinations with new products, packaging, marketing and merchandise.

Jane Henderson, Global President of Mintels Beauty and Personal Care Division says:

Mixologiste is fast becoming the stand-out trend that spans all beauty and personal care categories. This is a key mega trend, in development for the last year or so, but we are set to see it really accelerating in 2014. While manufacturers have worked with multifunctionality for a number of years, we are now seeing them take inspiration from completely different categories to create new products and marketing messages..

Mintel says the the mixologiste trend will impact hair care, skin care, colour cosmetics and fragrance in a variety of

    ways in 2014:

    > Hair chalks, for example, blend make-up with temporary

colourants, primers now extend to pre-styling treatments

and CC creams have moved beyond facial colour

cosmetics in to nail care, lipsticks and even hair care.

    > The company's Global Fragrance Analyst, Emmanuelle

Moeglin, even added: In the fragrance field, there is room to innovate by extending the category to new

formats and added benefits. We expect hair fragrances to

offer more than scent with targeted and time-release

delivery of specific benefits such as antioxidants,

    vitamins, pigments and UV filters.

    WHY A COLOR, ONLY ONE?

Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has been designating a Color of the Year to express in color what is taking place in the global zeitgeist. A color that will resonate around the world, the PANTONE Color of the Year is a reflection of what people are looking for, what they feel they need that color can help to answer. Not necessarily the hot fashion color of the moment, but a color crossing all areas of design which is an expression of a mood, an attitude, on the part of the consumers.

To distill the prevailing mood into a single hue, the PCI team, led by executive director Leatrice Eiseman, combs the world looking for future design and color influences, watching out for that one color seen as ascending and building in importance through all creative sectors. Influences can include the entertainment industry, upcoming films, art, emerging artists, travel destinations and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from technology, lifestyles + playstyles, new textures and effects that impact color, and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.

For the first time, Color Marketing Group debuts its World Palette Next, considering 2015+.

The palette is comprised of four key colors that resonate

around the globe and are comfortable no matter where they

    are used.

Spring Forever (Asia Pacific) A natural green that is healthy, vibrant and vigorous. Spring Forever reminds us that growth

is eternal and despite occasional setback, confidence

continues to grow around the world.

CU2 (Europe) A warm glow that casts a sense of authority and heritage. CU2 serves as a

bridge color that spans old and new; industrial

    or medicinal.

Malagueta (Latin America) An international color of passion and good health as red

berries, vegetables and blood sustain us.

Smoky Cashmere (North America) A blend of gray and brown that will evolve between now

and the coming years. Smoky Cashmere is

strong enough to stand on its own, though

offers balance when used as a backdrop from

which the other NEXT colors can emerge.

    Blue Eyeshadow

BLUE eyeshadow has always conjured up

images of Eighties disco divas, schoolgirls

who have just discovered make-up and the

    perennially unused shades in beauty

palettes - but not any more. For

    spring/summer 2014, make-up artists took

shades of azure, aqua, sapphire and sky

and made them new again, whether as a

flash of electric blue on the lower lash line

or in bold blocks of opaque colour across

    the lids.

The trick, for making the look modern?

Dick Page, who created the blue-eyed

looks at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tess

Giberson, kept other make-up to a

minimum to let the eyes really stand out,

whilst Pat McGrath applied the colour in

graphic blocks across the lids to prevent it

    from looking too retro.

    After the Alphabet successful creams

    Review

    Blur Cream

The "optical diffusing cream , a new step in your daily makeup routine. Depending on the brand, you can use blurring cream before foundation, or after liquid foundation as a finishing step before setting powder.

Why Should I? You ask. Using a blurring cream is like a having a soft focus shield on your face. It will erase fine lines and some wrinkles, and even out your skin tone. Some will address and hide shine as well.

Sounds Like a BB Or CC Cream: You're not wrong but it is very different, white in colour and feels more like a primer than the liquid consistency of an alphabet cream. Think of it as a filling cream that smooths the base.

Now it Sounds Like a Primer. . . No. But it is kind of in that family .It is a vital step in your beauty routine, and the crazy thing about blur cream, is you'll also be able to use one on top of your foundation as a finishing step, or as a touch-up product during the day. That amazing soft focus look will need some maintenance. And because blur cream is slightly thicker than a normal liquid product, it has to potential to move on your face. But be warned - use too much and you'll move your foundation.

Who Will Release One? While we expect many, many blurring creams to hit shelves this year, two new ones we definitely know about are from Garnier and L'Oral Paris. Garnier Skin Naturals Perfect Blur (available in February) has been developed through the brand's strong investment into advanced light reflecting technology, while L'Oral Paris Magic Blur (available in March) has powerful anti-ageing properties thanks to Revitalift.
