WHAT IS IN ASIA THAT EUROPEANS WOULD WANT?
The spirit of the Renaissance helped fuel
what came to be know as the Age of
Exploration.
Why?
Leonardo Da Vinci
Galileo Galilei
The Duomo in Florence, Italy
Trade with Asia had been going on for centuries over land trade routes to Europe, with most trade going through Constantinople.
In 1453 the city of Constantinople fell to the Islamic Turkish army, and slammed the door shut on trade to the European Christian countries.
In order to continue trade with Asia and supply Europe with the items that they had grown to love like pepper and silk, the Europeans had to find trade routes by sea.
Fueled by an adventurous spirit, profit and curiosity the European countries would eventually circle the globe, discover new lands and new peoples.
Death of Ferdinand Magellan in the Phillippines 1521
The European countries of Spain, Portugal, England, France and the Netherlands took the lead in overseas exploration and trade.
