running all night and water down the street drain. We are hoping this doesn’t happen again. We would like to encourage all residents to keep an eye out. Part of our association dues is used to pay for water usage, so it is our money down the drain as well. Plus the drought will likely worsen as summer approaches, wasting water just hurt all of us.

“SCHOOL’S OUT”Let’s be Careful and Watch Out for all the Children

At Play During the Summer Months

(BCS3) ANNUAL MEETING FOLLOW UP The Board would like to thank all the residents who either attended the Annual Meeting on May 20th or assigned their proxies so that they would be represented at the meeting. This annual event is a mandatory part of the neighborhood governance policies that allow our HOA to be a non-profit and legal entity.

One new director position was up for election at this year’s meet-ing - the results of this election, as well as the new Board positions for the five directors will be published in the July newsletter.

The Board would like to sincerely thank Maria Torres for volunteer-ing her time to serve on the Board of Directors over two years ago after a director resignation. During her period on the Board, Maria balanced her family and job with the various responsibilities associ-ated with being a Director. This included serving as Board President during 2010-2011 and handling the Welcoming Committee effort over the past year.

Bradford Colony Section 3WWW.BCS3.OrG

(BCS3) VOLUNTArY WATEr CONSErVATION: Each of us has received an insert in our Harris County MUD 102 water bill asking that we observe the voluntary water conservation program that they have laid out.

There are two simple rules with respect to this program:

1. Even numbered residences should water outdoors on Wednes-days and Sundays while odd numbered residences should water outdoors on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

2. Water should not be used outdoors between the hours of 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM and between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Despite the fact that we have had some significant rainfall and that the drought conditions have technically ended, it is anticipated that this will be another difficult summer season.

Let’s all work together to conserve our water resources while main-taining our yards within the guidelines outlined by the Harris County MUD District.

(BCS3) JULY 4Th CELEBrATIONEven though this holiday falls in the middle of the week this year, we are sure that everyone will be celebrating this special event. Barring a Harris County ban, there will be a lot of fireworks being used during this period.

As in the past, the Board would like to thank everyone ahead of time for making the effort to clean up all the fireworks debris in a timely fashion once their celebrations are completed.

(BCS3) 2012 BCS3 ASSESSMENT UPDATE Almost 90% of the BCS3 property owners have paid their 2012 Homeowners Assessment as of the writing of this newsletter update. This is an excellent situation for the HOA to be at this point in the year. The Board would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who taken the time to make their payments so far this year.

If as you read this newsletter item you still haven’t paid your 2012 Assessment or set up a payment plan, you are strongly encouraged to contact our management company (ACMP) at 281-855-9867 as soon as possible and talk to our agent (Theodora Daly) about making arrangements to address this issue.

(BCS3) YARD OF THE MONTHThis month’s award goes to the Mwakutuya Family at 6527 Horsepen Bayou Drive. Based on our records, this is the first time that the award has been given to Wellington and his family and it well earned. They have continually done a great job keeping their yard looking as good as possible, regardless of the sometimes brutal Houston weather. This effort is best exhibited by their ripping out their front lawn late last summer during the drought and restoring the entire lawn to its present top quality condition. Congratulation to Wellington and his family for all their hard work!

Despite last summer’s damaging drought conditions, the lawns and yards in BCS3 are looking great! A massive amount of work has been put in by our neighbors to restore their lawns and yards to great looking conditions.

(BCS3) WEBSITE REMINDER If you have time, please remember to get online and check out the neighborhood website at www.bcs3.org. The Board has been try-ing to keep this site as up-to-date as possible under the direction of Andy Nguyen.

Please take the time to check into this new and updated website - and feel free to contact any Board member with suggestions and comments pertaining to this site.

(BCS3) LANDSCAPING UPDATE - ESPLANADES: Hopefully, you have noticed how good the two esplanade areas are looking as you pull into the neighborhood off of Huffmiester Road. Ron Heydon and his people at Venture Landscaping have handled our landscaping issues for almost 10 years. This work includes handling all the trees, bushes and vegetation in these two public areas, as well as monitoring the efficiency of the sprinkler system with respect to timing and water coverage.

Recently, the esplanades underwent their “Spring Tune Up.” This included changing out the bedding plants, as well as fertilizing and mulching the two flower beds ($317), fertilizing the entire esplanade lawn area plus trees and bushes ($38), replacing one almost dead crepe myrtle ($135 for 10’ tree) and mulching all the trees in the esplanades ($70).

Venture has also been approved to come in and professionally trim the oak trees in back esplanade ($160).

In addition to all this extra work, Venture handles the mowing and edging on the esplanades. At this time of year, this work is done every week. BCS3 is charged a total of slightly under $100 per month for these regular lawn maintenance services.

These esplanades are the first things that visitors see when they pull into our neighborhood. Keeping these areas looking as good as possible definitely has a positive impact on curb appeal and the overall aesthetic quality of our neighborhood.

DID YOU KNOW?

Back in 2002, there was nothing in the two esplanades except for overgrown weeds.

The initial Board coordinated a neighborhood effort to install all the oak trees and crepe myrtles on the esplanades, as well as the sprinkler system. Many of your present neighbors kicked in and helped out with this work in an effort to keep costs down and make the neighborhood look as good as possible. Venture Landscaping was then asked to install and maintain the two bedding plant areas.

Many of the men and women who worked on this early BCS3 proj-ect have moved on to other areas, but their hard work remains as a testament to their desires to make our neighborhood as nice a place as possible to live.

(BCS3) CONTACT THE BOARDAs is the case with everything in our small neighborhood, every resident should feel free to contact any Board member as to any issue or question that you have about BCS3. Contact information for all the Board members is located on the inside back cover of this publication.

(CHC) YARD Of THE MONTHOur May YOM winner is your neighbors at 13414 N. Towerglen Loop. What a transformation this yard has undergone! The new landscaping is beautiful. Landscaping that was not doing well has been replaced with new plantings. Existing plantings have been trimmed and freshened-up. It must be a joy to live across the street and look out at this beautiful yard. Many of the yards in the neighborhood have really come to life lately. The ample rain has kept the yards green. May’s Yard of the Month winner was actually nominated by a neighbor. Know an outstanding yard that should win? Feel free to contact a board member! As always, thanks to everyone for their wonderful efforts! Once again, the Yard of the Month program is sponsored by Cornelius Nursery. YOM winners receive a gift certificate to Cornelius Nursery.

(CHC) TiMElY Tip fOR JUNE GARDENERSAs we approach another hot and hopefully not dry summer, all our plants can use some help. Fertilizing regularly helps plant keep their color and vitality. Water soluble fertilizers can be mixed and applied with each watering. Controlled-released fertilizers can be worked into the soil and are activated by heat. Remember to check plants daily and water in the mornings when possible. Don’t leave water sitting in the saucers under potted plants as this becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes! Always top off any exposed soil with 2 to 3 inches of mulch!

(CHC) TRASH TAlkWhen you are at the park, please use the trashcans for any trash. Trash not put in its proper place ends up blowing into neighbors’ yards. We try to keep a neat appearance to the neighborhood. When you put recycling out, please try to put newspapers toward the bottom of the bin to keep these from blowing around the neighborhood.

(CHC) WATER CONSERvATiONEveryone should have received a letter in the water bill last month about water conservation. While these conservation measures are voluntary, we all need to be “water-wise.” Houses with even-num-bered addresses should only do outside watering on Wednesday

and Sunday. Those with odd-number addresses should only do outside watering on Tuesday and Saturday. Watering outdoors is recommended between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM or between of 6:00

Concord ColonyOn June 14th, we recognize the emblem of the land we love. The home of the free and the brave. June 14th is Flag Day.

Don’t forget to honor your Dad on Father’s Day,

June 17th and Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads

in the neighborhood.

Summer officially begins on June 20th even though kids have been out of school for nearly a month and the temperature has not waited for the ‘official’ day. When in the sun, try to wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and head and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Make a special effort to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly. Let’s not forget to stay mindful of the chil-dren in our community and be sure and drive with care around our neighborhood.

Also vacation time is in full swing and we ask everyone to be vigil, help out their neighbors and be on the alert for inappropriate activity around the neighborhood. Please report any suspicious happenings to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000. Let’s all try to work together to keep our neighborhood safe and crime free this summer and year round.

This year on July 4th, we celebrate the 236th birthday of the country we are blessed to live in. Don’t forget the holiday this year falls on a Wednesday. We hope everyone enjoys a safe and happy Fourth of July celebration. Please exercise responsibility in your festivities. You can visit the Harris County Fire Marshall website (www.hcfmo.net/fireworks.aspx) for information on fireworks usage. This then, is the state of the union: free and restless, growing and full of hope. So it was in the beginning. So it shall always be, while God is willing and we are strong enough to keep the faith. ~Lyndon B. Johnson

(CC) IMPORTANT NEIGHBORHOOD INFORMATION

Some of the neighborhood signs including speed limit signs, street signs and deed restriction enforcement signs have been vandalized, broken and/or stolen from our neighborhood roadways. These reflective signs plus the labor to install them are not cheap and are costing us all money that could be put to better use elsewhere for the neighborhood. If you see any improper activity in our neighbor-hood, please report it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Department at 713-221-6000.

We still have a problem with people putting trash out at the curb before it should be. It should be Sunday NIGHT for Monday Morn-ing and Wednesday NIGHT for Thursday Morning. Then you need to put your trash can out of sight the rest of the time. They should not be stored at the side of your house, in front of your garage, etc. OUT OF SIGHT!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!

We also have a problem with trash flying all over the neighborhood as some people are not putting trash items in bags or in trash cans. Newspapers for recycling should have something put over them so that the wind does not blow them all over the neighborhood. Please help keep our neighborhood clean and help your neighbor so they do not have to pick up your trash. Thank you!!!!

CY-FALLS high SChooLCYPRESS FALLS KEY CLUB WiNS hoNoRS AT

2012 DiSTRiCT CoNVENTioNFrom April 12th to 15th, the Cypress Falls Key Club traveled to Dallas to attend the annual Texas-Oklahoma District Convention. Each year, over one thousand Key Club members from the two states learn to become valuable leaders, earn awards for their service to their communities and celebrate a year of successes.

This year, the Cypress Falls Key Club earned many honors. Based on monthly reports that reflect the club’s performance, it ranked as the fifth Key Club in the entire Texas-Oklahoma district. The Cypress Falls volunteers also earned a variety of other awards. Cypress Falls won the first place award and a patch for the Dis-trict Project. Roshni Chandwani, former Vice President and future President, won third place in Original Oratory. Their website, www.cfallskeyclub.webs.com, earned a Distinguished Website Patch. The Cypress Falls Key Club also won the Governor’s Project Patch and UNICEF’s ELIMINATE Patch.

In addition, two of the Cypress Falls Key Club officers from the 2011-2012 school year will go on to serve district positions during the upcoming school year. Carolina Hernandez, the school Key Club’s former president, was appointed to be the 3N Lieutenant Governor. Next year, Hernandez will preside over the Key Clubs in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and Katy ISD. Kevin Duong, the secretary from the 2011-2012 school year, was elected as the Texas-Oklaho-ma District Secretary of Key Club International. Duong will preside over the three hundred clubs and seventeen thousand members throughout the Texas-Oklahoma district to manage monthly reports and records.

The Cypress Falls Key Club definitely appreciated the honors it received at the District Convention this year. “I am so proud of all of our clubs,” said the organization’s sponsor, Kathie Kiklas. “Although we all compete against each other, we cheer each on knowing how much it takes to make the top 25. Congratulations to each and every Key Clubber.”

Though the club won big at DCON, it’s members have been able to keep their eye on the real prize - making an impact on their

community. Just recently, the Cypress Falls Key Club teamed up with other local Key Clubs to hold a Kiwanis Bake Sale. All proceeds went toward Eliminate, an organization that works to stop neonatal tetanus. The Cypress Falls Key Club is looking for even more events where they can lend a helping hand. If your organization is in need of devoted volunteers, be sure to contact the Cypress Falls Key Club.

CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIRWhat a great year! From the ice cream social, pj party, men’s bbq, spaghetti dinner and auction, concerts, appearances, parties, to the fundraising, banquet and everything in between: It’s been fantastic! Thank you to everyone for helping our choir men and women have a year full of memories that will last a lifetime. The Spring Trip to Dallas was a load of fun - supporting the jousting men of the sections at Medieval Times, dining at Hard Rock Cafe and playing at Fiesta Texas was enjoyment for all. The chaperones and the students came home equally happy and exhausted! A round of applause for all involved in carrying out such a huge event so successfully! Our graduating seniors are thrilled to continue on their journey, their presence will surely be missed. They were recognized in the most harmonious of ways at the Spring concert. We would like to take this moment to wish them great encouragement on their future accomplishments as we note them by name: Kortland Allen, Jordan Ashworth, Jake Bracher, Madison Burt, Jake Hermida, Cameron Hussey, Kendrea Johnson, Kayley Jones, Eleni Kotzabassis, Elizabeth Lopez, Issiah Miles, James Nguyen, Amanda Sheriff, Kari Sterner and Taylor White. Along with the students graduating, their supportive parents will leave our fold with them. The executive board will be losing some very dedicated and loving parents as well. We recognize Marcely Burt and Debbie Mandola, along with long time executive board members, Heidi and Warren Hussey. You have been the backbone of the choir’s extracurricular activities and Ms. Douglas’s right hand. Your countless dedicated hours of your many selfless efforts will forever be seen in the continued success of our choir students. You have loved and been loved and we hope you will carry that love with you and remember your time at Cy-Falls with fondness. Thank you seems so inadequate, but it is said with full, heavy, grateful, heartfelt and warmth. Thank you. Our men’s choir had a command performance for the CFISD Execu-tive Board. They sang in front of the board and resounded beautifully as they presented a sample of their vocal excellence that was enjoyed at TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association). Congratulations to this honors choir for a job well done. The banquet ‘Denim and Diamonds’ was held at the Northwest Conference Center. It is said that presentation is everything and the presentation was outstanding! A big Thank you to Sandra Greer, Banquet Chairman. Awards presented by the students were heart felt and hilarious, as the slideshow showcased just how much humor this group has!

CFEF EARNS SPOT ON TOP 20 NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS LIST

A recent study conducted by Dewey and Associates looked at the

50 largest school districts in the nation to determine which of the

districts’ Educational Foundations were doing the best job of sup-

porting education. Cy-Fair Educational Foundation made the list,

coming in at number 15 in the nation!

CFISD RECEIVES H-E-B EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was named the large district winner during

the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony honoring out-

standing public schools. Recognized for outstanding commitment

to student achievement, parental and community involvement and

professional development opportunities for teachers and adminis-

trators, CFISD was chosen for the award among five large district

finalists and earned a $100,000 cash award.

“I’m fortunate to be a part of a district with a lot of special people

who make a large school system feel like a tight-knit community,”

said Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools. “It’s gratifying to

accept an award that recognizes the positive impact of public edu-

cation in Texas.”

During the ceremony, Hamilton Elementary School principal Dr.

Catherine Bartlett was chosen among 10 finalists as the winner for

the statewide Principal Award, honoring the top campus leaders

and achievers in the state. Bartlett, who was selected as a finalist for

the award in March, received a $10,000 cash prize and a $25,000

grant for Hamilton Elementary. “It is an honor to receive the H-E-B

Excellence in Education award. I am so proud of our Hamilton staff

and students and I love having this opportunity to brag on them a little

more,” said Bartlett. “Next week we will begin gathering student ideas

for the use of our school’s prize money. I love visiting with the children

and working with them to make Hamilton the best school it can be.”

H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education awards program in 2002

in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators

(TASA) as a positive way to support public education in Texas. In its

11 years, the program has generated more than $5.5 million to

educators, schools and districts across the state. More than 4,000

nominations were submitted at the beginning of the year for the

award, which resulted in 800 completed applications submitted by

nominees that were reviewed by judges from the Colleges of Educa-

tion at Trinity University and Texas State University. Judges narrowed

the field to 148 teachers, 47 principals, 19 early childhood facilities

and 25 school districts, which competed in the regional judging

process in February. Five regional judging panels comprised of for-

mer winners, administrators and university and community leaders

selected the 40 individual statewide finalists, while the district final-

ists were selected by separate judging panels that reviewed their

written applications and conducted individual site visits.

All finalists were invited to Houston for the awards celebration and

special reception in their honor. During their stay, the teachers and

principals participated in personal interviews with the statewide

judging panel to determine a winner.

CRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADEWritten by Melissa M. Williams

an Iggy the Iguana Book

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.
