Bianca Andreescu Teenage SensationPrior to the 2019 season, Canadian Bianca Andreescu was

viewed by tennis analysts as a future star who would fulfill herpotential in seasons to come. But by the end of the 2019 season, hertalent was already fully realized as she became a household name. The magic began at the BNP Paribas Open, hosted at world-renowned Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where she defeatedAngelique Kerber for her first WTA title.

A few days later she injured her right shoulder during the fourthround of the Miami Open, leading to a three-month recovery. Sheattempted a comeback at the French Open but was forced to retirebefore her second-round match and missed the entire grass-courtseason. The comeback truly began during the U.S. Open series asAndreescu acquired her second WTA title, defeating SerenaWilliams at the 2019 Rogers Cup in Toronto—the first Canadian toclaim the championship in 50 years.

Two weeks later, the 19-year-old appeared in her very firstGrand Slam final, ultimately defeating Serena Williams, who wasseeking her record-tying 24th major championship, 6-3, 7-5.During the second set, Williams was down 5-1 but never gave up,ultimate losing only 7-5.

“I had some doubts because I’ve witnessed her come back frombeing 5-0 down,” Andreescu said at the time. “I just told myself tostick with my tactics.”

The tactics were certainly successful. She became the firstCanadian to win a Grand Slam singles title, the first female to winthe U.S. Open during her main-draw debut and the first player bornafter 2000 to claim victory at a Grand Slam championship. Inaddition, she rose to No. 5 in the WTA rankings, the highest rankingever achieved by a Canadian woman.

Not to mention, Andreescu also became just the sixth womanto win the BNP Paribas Open and the U.S. Open in the same year, joining such luminaries as Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and MonicaSeles. At the same time she also enjoyed another outstandingachievement, becoming the first teenager to win a Grand Slamsingles title in 13 years; the last was Maria Sharapova in the 2006U.S. Open.

“I’m beyond grateful and truly blessed. I’ve worked really, reallyhard for this moment,” Andreescu stated after winning the U.S.Open. “This year has been a dream come true.”

As hard as it may be to believe, we’re about to embark on the 2020 tennis season, one that’s expected toprovide fans plenty of entertainment as the game’s greatest players prepare to continue to break records

and up-and-comers hope to fulfill their potential and prove that the future of tennis is as bright as ever.

But first, let’s take a look back at the remarkable year that was 2019—a year full of incredible play, record performances, surprises and extraordinary headlines.

Rafael Nadal Back on Top Yet AgainIf you look up the word “longevity” in the

dictionary, you may eventually see a photographof Rafael “Rafa” Nadal next to the definition. Afterclinching the year-end No. 1 ATP ranking for thefirst time back in 2008, he achieved the feat yetagain 11 years later, the longest gap ever recordedin tennis history.

In November, he claimed the world No. 1ranking for the 196th week—exactly one yearafter he last held it. A 19-time Major champion, including two Grand Slams in 2019—the FrenchOpen and the U.S. Open—Nadal has earned morethan $115 million in on-court earnings.Additionally, he’s had eight stints at No. 1 in theworld (ranking thus far fourth place all time), hasearned the No. 1 world ranking during nine of thelast 12 years and is the second-oldest No. 1-rankedplayer in history, behind only Roger Federer.

“Rafa has made a habit of setting the highest ofstandards throughout his career and his return toNo. 1 is just the latest example,” says ChrisKermode, ATP executive chairman and president.“It’s an incredible achievement and he continuesto amaze me with his longevity at the top of thegame.”

At the same time, he is also the oldest playerever to be ranked the year-end No. 1 worldranking, has acquired the year-end No. 1 ATPranking five times (one year less than PeteSampras) and is the first player to finish year-endNo. 1 during five nonconsecutive years (2008,2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019).

Aside from winning two majors and regaininghis No. 1 world ranking, 33-year-old Nadal alsowon two other ATP tournaments and clinchedthe year-end No. 1 ATP ranking during the verylast tournament of the year, the Nitto ATPFinals—the ninth time during the last 19 yearsthat the year-end No 1 ATP ranking wasdetermined during the final tournament of theseason.

“Since the inception of the ATP rankings in1973, only 17 players can lay claim to finishingyear-end No. 1,” Kermode adds. “Rafa had anotherincredible season and fully deserves thisaccolade.”

Roger Federer Looking to the FutureLast fall, Roger Federer announced he had

invested in On, a Swiss trainer manufacturer. As aresult, he’ll become the public face of the company’ssneaker label. Due to his lack of a footwear contract forover a year, some tennis analysts have wonderedwhether Federer would retire soon.

But according to the 38-year-old living legendhimself, retirement is not yet being considered. In fact, during an interview with TODAY show hostSavannah Guthrie, he jokingly stated he will “neverretire.”

Renowned as an ironman who has never retiredduring a tennis match throughout his lengthy career,Federer experienced what life would be like aftertennis as he recovered from an MCL tear in 2016. Hedidn’t seem to mind it much.

“It was nice to be able to have schedules withfriends—lunch on Wednesday, dinner on Friday andfun on the weekends,” Federer says. “I’m really lookingforward to that.”

As the all-time men’s leader with 20 Grand Slamsingles titles, Federer has earned $116 million in on-court earnings. Yet, despite all his record-breakingperformances, he remains as passionate about playingas ever as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.

“The [On team] want me to keep playing, I want tokeep playing and my fans want me to keep playing,” hesays. “I’ll continue to play as long as the stars are stillaligned.”

From the start, the success story of Indian Wells TennisGarden (IWTG) has been about partnerships. Tennis greatCharlie Pasarell, who also owned the BNP Paribas Open,

envisioned a world-class tennis facility in the Coachella Valley. Butit wasn’t until he joined forces with former tennis player Ray Mooreand the late Mark McCormick that the vision evolved from dreamto reality.

When Indian Wells Tennis Garden opened in 2000, it usheredin a new era of tennis.

Moore and Pasarell took the vision as far as they could with thefunding they had, but IWTG wasn’t yet where it could be. Carryingout the full extent of Pasarell’s vision was handed over to Oracle co-founder and CEO, Larry Ellison, a passionate tennis fan with themillions required to carry IWTG to the next level; make that thenext multiple levels.

In 2009, Ellison bought both Indian Wells Tennis Garden andthe BNP Paribas Open, a pairing that has elevated the sport oftennis in almost every way. And it isn’t that he just handed overmoney; Ellison brought his own vision and an extraordinaryattention to detail to the work of making IWTG one of the toptennis facilities in the world. In fact, every year since he’s owned thetournament and IWTG, Ellison has overseen innovativeexpansions and additions. Ray Moore has continued to stayinvolved.

Stadium 2 opened in 2014, and there was an extensiverenovation prior to the 2017 BNP Paribas Open, whichtransformed Stadium 1, including new seating, a VIP ChampionsClub, remodeled suites and a lowered court surface toaccommodate recessed TV cameras. The Stadium Plaza was alsoadded and the Superwall was expanded to display five matches atonce.

Bringing fine dining to IWTG was another Ellison visionrealized when celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Nobu Matsuhisawere enticed to bring their signature restaurants to the BNPParibas Open—Spago and Nobu, respectively. Revered localrestaurants such as Piero’s PizzaVino and Fresh Agava, to name afew, are also part of the mix, giving Indian Wells Tennis Garden thatspecial ethos of global and local simultaneously, a place wherevisitors from around the world and around the valley can feel athome.

Pasarell has been quoted as saying that handing over the facilityand tournament to Ellison was one of the best decisions he and theother original partners made. He has said things keep getting bettereach year—and no one is arguing. What Ellison and his team havedone is to create an extraordinary experience for everyoneinvolved, right down to details of the landscaping.

It’s not called a garden for no reason. From Ellison’s first daysoverseeing IWTG he wanted to revamp the landscaping to create

testament to the unbeatable facilities and amenitiesavailable at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, as well as thededication of the staff who work tirelessly to ensure that theplayers are comfortable, happy and able to perform at theirbest during their time in the desert.”

Yet all that begs the question: If IWTG has reached“paradise” status now, is there anywhere else for it to go?Dore says yes.

“We can’t wait to welcome patrons to the Indian WellsTennis Garden for the 2020 BNP Paribas Open, and formany years to come. Every year, we strive to improve andensure an even better experience for everyone who attendsthe event, from players to fans to media and sponsors. Weare always considering new amenities and offerings that willenhance every aspect of the onsite experience so that wecan continue to be the premier destination for tennis fansaround the world, and the pre-eminent stop on Tour forplayers.”

It took Ellison’s millions to get IWTG to where it istoday, but money alone hasn’t made the difference. All of thepartners who dreamed big, who saw potential to create oneof the greatest tennis facilities in the world to serve as thevenue for what is fairly described as the greatesttournament outside of the Grand Slams, all of the teamswho put heart and soul into the work, have been as criticalas the funds.

We can all look forward to where Indian Wells TennisGardens will go in the next 20 years.

the perfect backdrop for his tournament, one matching the grandeur of what naturealready created in the valley and themountains framed in the distance. Dozensof palm trees, f lower gardens and waterfeatures were added throughout thevenue, giving credence to the facilitynickname the management team is fond of,“tennis paradise.”

But others have also noticed theparadise-like aspects of The Indian WellsTennis Garden; there’s no question that it’sa place fans, players, media, sponsors andVIPs want to be, thanks to all that Ellisonhas done in the 10 years he’s owned thevenue.

More importantly, perhaps, his visionfor IWTG and the BNP Paribas Open and

the improvements he’s made have drivenchanges in tennis facilities andtournaments worldwide. Players and fanswho experience IWTG want the sameamenities and atmosphere at other tennisstadiums. Ellison has raised the bar higherand higher and other facilities andtournaments know have to keep up or beviewed as hopelessly outdated andinsufficient.

One Coachella Valley resident andTennis Hall of Fame champion put itsuccinctly when considering all thatEllison has done so far. “He has been goodfor tennis, period.”

Philippe Dore, marketing director forthe BNP Paribas Open, says IWTG hasremained true to the original vision. “TheIndian Wells Tennis Garden was built toref lect the world-class event it hosts andthe majestic backdrop of the CoachellaValley that surrounds it. It was built as aplace for fans to enjoy world-class tennismatches, unparalleled dining options andsome of the most scenic views anywhere inthe world—and the recent renovations andimprovement ensure that it remains assuch.”

He’s also proud that the BNP ParibasOpen has been voted Tournament of theYear for six years running by both the ATPand WTA players. “This honor is a

The world of golf has lost a legend.Pete Dye, the genius responsiblefor designing golf courses such as

PGA West Stadium Course in La Quintaand The Westin Mission Hills Resort & SpaSouth Course in Rancho Mirage, passedaway on January 9, 2020, at the age of 94.He spent his last days in the DominicanRepublic, the site of several Dye familycourses.

Dye is considered one of the mostinf luential course architects in the world. As a matter of fact, he’s often referred to asthe Picasso of golf-course architecture.Often collaborating with his wife,Alice, who died in 2019 at age 91, and inlater years with their two sons, Perry andPaul Burke (known as P.B.), Dye designedmore than 100 courses in two dozen U.S.

states, Europe and around the world.Small greens and the use of railroad

ties to hold bunkers were among thehallmarks of his designs. His plan for theBrickyard Crossing golf course atIndianapolis Motor Speedway utilized thedismantled outer retaining wall from theracetrack. Dye’s designs have been creditedwith returning short- and medium-lengthpar 4s to golf.

Dye and his wife were best known forthe “island green,” the par-3, 17th hole atTPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach,Florida. The green instills fear in even themost skilled golfers, especially at thePlayers Championship, an unofficial fifthmajor tournament, even though the greenis only 135 yards from the tee. Surroundedby water and connected to the rest of the

course by a narrow land bridge, it’s one ofthe most photographed images in thesport.

Dye began playing golf as a boy inFlorida. He went on to win the Ohio statehigh-school golf championship, and whileserving in the Army during World War II,he continued to play in Georgia and NorthCarolina. He and Alice were married in1950, settled in Indiana and sold insurance.

Dye played in the United States Openin 1957, and in 1959 the couple designedtheir first course, the nine-hole El DoradoGolf Club in Indianapolis. With noprofessional training, they struggled withthe design aspect at first. Then in 1963,after Dye competed in the British amateurchampionship on the Old Course at St.Andrews in Scotland, he and Alice made abreakthrough. Dye’s memoir states, “Mynew understanding of the use of smallgreens, wide fairways, the impression thatground-level greens were elevated, contrasting grass mixes, severe undulationsin the fairways, pot bunkers, railroad ties, blind holes and the inclusion of gorse-likevegetation to frame holes would affect allour future designs.”

Dye collaborated with Jack Nicklaus indesigning the Harbour Town Golf Linkson Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.Nicklaus said in a statement, “It was Petewho inspired me to start designing coursesmore than 50 years ago, and so in manyways I owe my second career to him.”

Dye liked to create courses thatref lected a sense of adventure and there’sno doubt he was a risk taker. In addition toa multitude of awards throughout hiscareer, he received the PGA Tour LifetimeAchievement Award in 2005 and wasinducted into the World Golf Hall of Famein 2008.

Dye suffered from Alzheimer’s diseasein his final years, a cruel irony thatprevented him from fully embracing theextent to which he defined the golfexperience for thousands of golfers aroundthe globe. He impacted the sport of golf forgenerations to come, and golfers who playon his courses can pay tribute to him eachtime they take a swing.

When patrons turn out for this year’s ANA Inspiration, they won’t notice many changes; if it ain’t broke, as theysay, don’t fix it.

Aside from a couple of minor operational tweaks, a JapaneseLPGA Tour exemption, a couple of new ticket options and theknowledge that Augusta National Golf Club is having its nibble atthe field, the tournament will be immediately familiar to the loyalfans who return year after year. When the championship iscontested April 2-5, they’ll see that the features that make theANA the ANA are all in place.

Food options, player access, covered grandstands on No. 18,Poppie’s Pond and more, all centered around the acclaimed DinahShore Tournament Course, will be there again in 2020 just as long-timers remember them. Did we mention a field that includes ahuge percentage of the best female golfers on the planet?

“One of the great things about the ANA Inspiration is we neverhave to worry about our field,” says Chris Garrett, the tournamentdirector. “We’re going to end up with 50 of the top 50 players in theworld, and probably on down further than that. As long as playersare healthy enough to play, no one is skipping the ANA Inspirationfor a number of reasons. Obviously, it’s the first majorchampionship of the year, [it has] a great purse, people love comingout to the desert and they love the tournament course at MissionHills.”

Adding a Japanese LPGA Tour exemption for 2020, Garrettnotes, was an easy decision, and not just because thechampionship’s title sponsor is based in Japan. The exemption wasan intentional move toward global recognition and inclusion, and

Garrett cites reigning Women’s British Open champion, HinakoShibuno, as a primary reason for specifically singling out Japan andthe JLPGA.

“If you watched the Women’s British Open last year and caughtthe winner, the Japanese girl that won that event, wow, what anunbelievable performance,” he says. “But better than that, shesmiled and high-fived her way all the way around. It was anincredible scene to witness, and if we can extend an invitation tosomeone like that, we’re happy to do so.”

The new realty for the ANA Inspiration is that it must competewith Augusta National Golf Club’s women’s amateur tournament, which is played on the same weekend. However, Garrett says, theANA has already issued its amateur invitations for this year’s eventand the response has been more than satisfying. The amateur fieldwill be announced in early February and, once again, the winner of

the ANA Junior Inspiration, played the week before the actualchampionship, will also play her way into the field.

“We’ve extended our amateur invitations and we’re very happywith the field we have,” Garrett says. “Obviously, Augusta’s going tocontinue to do its event, and it is going to get a number of players. But there’s also a group of players that look forward to theopportunity to play in a major championship on a tour wherethey’re going to make their living in the future.”

Garrett and his team were pleasantly surprised by the numberof players who told them if they got an invite, they’d choose to playthe ANA.

“That’s not to take away from what Augusta’s doing; they’redoing something wonderful there,” he adds. ‘But I think the idea

According to Warburton, localorganizer Clarke Rheney deserves a heftypat on the back as well. “Between ClarkeRheney and our board, and all the peopleout in the desert, we’ve had really greatresults. And we all feel blessed for that,” hesays.

“The projection this year is very high. It’s the 10th year and we’re all feeling thepressure on that. But we wanna keep itgoing. I don’t think any of us expectedresults like this. Everyone has worked hardand it’s all worked out well. Clarke is a realpro and knows what he’s doing. We werefortunate to get him involved. He’s workedreally hard for 10 years and that’s why weare where we are.”

Because the format has been sosuccessful, Warburton and Rheney plan toadhere to the script when it comes to the10th anniversary event—with thepossibility of a few new wrinkles.

“We’re pretty much sticking with whatworks,” Warburton says. “There’s a coupleof ridiculous things going on, we’ll see whathappens there. We’ve got some silly ideasfor some new things and we’ll see if theycome to fruition. Other than that, wealways work really hard on the music, andonce again this year we should have somereally fantastic acts that perhaps we haven’thad or seen before.”

When “The Warburton” convenes for the 10th timeMarch 5-8 at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert, participants will once again get together to sing, dance,

play golf and share good times. They’ll also celebrate adding another chunk to the grand total

the tournament has raised for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitalin those years, a total that blew past the $10 million mark last year.

Tournament namesake and spearhead, Patrick Warburton, who shot to fame as the character Puddy on the Seinfeld televisionsitcom, says the whole thing—the passing of time, the success ofthe tournament and the funds raised for St. Jude—is all prettyf labbergasting.

“It’s hard to believe. It’s gone by fast but it’s been such aspectacular grand experience for us all,” he says. “We’ve got themost worthy beneficiary anywhere in St. Jude, and St. Jude is suchan inspiration.”

In 10 years The Warburton has gone from a loose gathering ofwell-meaning celebrities testing the waters to see if they could makea charitable impact, to one of the most successful and anticipatedcelebrity events on the desert calendar—or any calendar.

In fact, it has become so popular, the golf tournament has goneto an invitation-only format and still sold out the JW Marriott’s

Palm Course, along with the Classic Club in Rancho Mirage, in just24 hours. The Warburton also continues to be the highest grossinggolf tournament for St. Jude nationwide.

Part of the tournament’s success has stemmed from its format, which includes a Songwriter’s Night, The Jam (affectionatelyknown as Rheneypalooza), two rounds of golf with a celebrityplayer and The Soiree on the Saturday evening of the event.Celebrity participants for The Jam, Songwriter’s Night and golf willbe announced in late January or early February.

The Songwriters Night, scheduled for March 5, is just that; anintimate gathering where songwriters tell the stories behind thesongs. The Jam features an all-star lineup of musicians and singersfrom across the musical spectrum, all coming together on one stagethe night of March 6. The Soiree on March 7 serves as the event’sformal affair with a red-carpet cocktail party, dinner, silent auctionand entertainment by Sixwire and Friends. The rounds of golf arescheduled for March 7-8.

Another key element in the tournament’s success is the lure ofmaking a significant charitable contribution to St. Jude, whichtreats all of its patients free of charge. St. Jude describes its work as,“leading the way the world understands, treats and defeatschildhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.”

There are a lot of celebritytournaments out there to choosefrom, all raising funds for worthy

causes. But Grant Fuhr would like you toknow this: If you play in the first annualGrant Fuhr Celebrity Invitational, yourmoney will stay right here in the CoachellaValley.

Fuhr, who had his name etched on theStanley Cup five times during his 10 years asa goaltender with the Edmonton Oilers, knows there are a lot of charity tournamentchoices because he participates in his shareof them annually. He has a lot of experiencewhen it comes to being a celebrity at acelebrity golf fundraiser, and he knows whatparticipants want and enjoy when theythrow their money down.

So it stands to reason his event, scheduledfor April 5-7 at Desert Hot Springs’ DesertDunes Golf Club, will generate the best oftimes with the best of celebrities in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere.

“It’s going to be a little more laid back,”says Fuhr, now the director of golf at DesertDunes. “There’s not going to be a whole lotof heavy lifting for the celebrities; we wantthem to have a good time and we wantthem to entertain the people who aregoing to play in the tournament. We wanteveryone to have fun and have a good time. It’s very casual so that the people who payto play in the tournament actually getsome time to spend with the celebrities.”

And which lucky local charity will bethe beneficiary?

“The (Hazelden) Betty FordFoundation,” Fuhr says. “It’s anopportunity for me to give back to thecommunity. If we can give back a couple ofhundred thousand dollars the first year, Ithink that’d be a huge win.”

Fuhr notes he probably plays in 20 to25 charity tournaments each year. “And italways seems to be for somewhere else, never for where I’m living,” he says. “Someof the tournaments I play here, but themoney always goes out of Palm Springs; itdoesn’t stay here. So this is a chance to giveback to where I’m actually living.”

And who will the lucky participantsget to play and socialize with? The currentlist of celebrity golfers includes Steve Azar,

Dave Brock, Kelly Chase, Johnny Damon,Seth Joyner, Brittany Lincicome, JimMcMahon, John O’Hurley, Sterling Sharpeand Reggie Smith. But there’s more.

“Tentatively we’ve got  Wayne(Gretzky) and Wayne’s wife, Janet,” Fuhrsays. “But the biggest thing we’d like toaccomplish is that we have a full field andthat everybody has a good time, everyonehas fun. If everyone does that, we’ll raise alot of money for charity.”

Highlights of the tournament include apairings party on Sunday, April 5, and onTuesday, April 7, Fuhr will host a celebrities-only skins game at Desert Dunes. Thetournament itself is scheduled for Monday,April 6, with an awards dinner followingthe round of golf.

Foursomes and individuals are eligible tocompete; teams will consist of four amateursand one celebrity. The tournament alsooffers six levels of sponsorship. For more sign-up or sponsorship information, visit usat  desertdunesgc.com and click the “Events”tab.

In the 1970s, nine brave women boldly broke away from thebody that governed the sport of tennis and risked their careersto fight for equality on and off the tennis courts. They were

suspended from participating in the Grand Slam tournaments aswell as their own national and team tournaments as punishmentfor bucking the establishment.

Ultimately the Original Nine, with tennis legends Billie JeanKing and Rosie Casals at the eye of the social hurricane, triumphedagainst the odds and launched the women’s professional tennistour known as the Virginia Slims Circuit. It became the mostsuccessful in the world with the highest prize money for women. In1971, Billie Jean King became the first female athlete to win$100,000 in one year.

This year marks 50 years since the Original Nine changed thecourse of women’s tennis, leveling the field so that women canenjoy equal prize money in all Grand Slam tournaments and ATPand WTA events. In addition to King and Casals, other members ofthe Original Nine were Valerie Ziegenfuss (Bradshaw), NancyRichey, Jane “Peaches” Bartkowicz, Kristy Pigeon, Judy Tegart-Dalton, Kerry Melville Reid and Gladys Heldman.

The Love & Love Tennis Foundation, established in 2015 byCasals and Tory Fretz, will celebrate this historic developmentwith a tribute to Billie Jean King at the Annalee Thurston Awardfundraiser on Sunday, March 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the IndianWells Tennis Garden. Organized by Tennis Hall of Famer Casals, the event will be presented by sponsors RumChata Foundation,Joan Oloff Shoes and Rodney Strong Vineyards.

Established in 2011, this is the tenth annual Annalee ThurstonAward reception. For seven years the reception supported ascholarship fund at the University of Oregon. Two years ago, withthe fund becoming fully endowed, the event took on a newbeneficiary, the Love & Love Tennis Foundation (LLTF), whichprovides grant donations to academies, individuals andorganizations that support youth tennis throughout the CoachellaValley.

Annalee Thurston served as a senior consultant to the VirginiaSlims Tour and was a sports executive for the Indio Chamber ofCommerce. Her impact on the world of tennis is still widely felt,

despite her sudden passing in 2007 at the age of 55 from a brainaneurysm.

The reception will again be held in conjunction with the BNPParibas Open. Billie Jean King, this year’s recipient of the annualAnnalee Thurston Award, is a former world No. 1 tennisprofessional, the winner of 39 Grand Slam Titles and widelycelebrated for defeating Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes”tennis match at the Houston Astrodome in 1973. King and herlifelong partner, Ilana Kloss, established the Billie Jean KingLeadership Initiative to address the issue of inclusiveness in theworkplace.

As for powerhouse Casals, her tennis career spans more thanthree decades starting in the early 1960s. She was involved in theestablishment of the WTA in 1973. Best known for doubles, Casalswon 12 Grand Slam titles, seven Wimbledon championships (fivewith Billie Jean King) and four U.S. Open mixed doubleschampionships. Her 112 doubles titles are second only to MartinaNavratilova. She’s also a desert resident, clearing the path for theadvancement of youth tennis programs in the Coachella Valleythrough her foundation.

This year, Lydia Rodriguez, No. 1 at the Coachella Valley HighSchool Girls Tennis Team, will receive the Vicki Berner “Heart &Spirit” Award.

The evening will include live and silent auctions and a raff le,and Mary Carillo will serve as the emcee for the dinner andreception. Those wishing to attend or support the event canpurchase tickets for $250 each or tables of ten for $2,500 bycontacting [email protected] or calling 760.772.9411. Thanks to the efforts of the Original Nine, women—and men—around the world can continue to proudly declare, “We’ve come along way, baby!”

Forward Swing – FinishThe key to executing great wedge shots is through impact. My ability to f lush the ball on the clubface helps me control my ballf light. The main element that I try to feel through impact is for my hands to “shallow off” inside of the clubface. This helps mekeep the shaft leaning forward and controls the depth of my clubface. In the photo sequence, I look for my hands staying insidethe clubface all the way to my finish. That way there is no “f lip” in my hands and I can very easily control the toe of the club.

42 DesertGolf&tennis • februaryMarch2020

The 16th Hole on the Stadium Course at PGA WEST is a very difficult par 5 with a small multi-level green. When executing the approach shot to this difficult green, I like to hit a slight cut shot to help me control the

distance the ball is traveling to the f lag. Here’s how I execute that shot.

Setup – BackswingOn my setup, I want to aim slightly left of my target to allow the ball to launch left of my target, knowing that I’m going to spin theball from left to right through the air.

As I make my takeaway from the ball through a good core turn, I like to have my club swing path slightly outside my hands, makingthe path slightly vertical or steep on that backswing. That swing path takeaway opens up a lot of space for my transition into theforward swing for the golf club to drop and transition my clubface swing to go through my right arm.

Conformis, designed a customizedimplant to address the shortcomings oftraditional off-the-shelf implants. I wasfortunate to be part of that design team.We developed a method to moreaccurately shape the bone, using a CT scanto create a 3-D model of each patient’s leg.We calculate the correct alignment of eachpatient’s leg. A 3-D printer is used to makethe cutting tools that snap onto thepatient’s bone like a Lego and areextremely accurate. Then the implant, using the same 3-D information from theCT scan, is manufactured to be a perfectsize and shape fit of the patient’s bone, recreating the individual anatomy andbiomechanics.

With over 100,000 implantations,we’ve dropped the dissatisfaction rate tounder 10 percent for the first time, and 91percent of patients even forget which kneewas replaced! One study showed that 100percent of these customized implants fallwithin a two-degree margin of alignmenterror. That’s better than an intraoperativerobot (which uses an implant designed in1997) or intraoperative computers, whichonly reach 90 to 95 percent. Anotherstudy showed that the custom kneeimplant reproduces natural motion moreso than any off-the-shelf implant. Lastly, the United Kingdom registry, whichfollows all surgeons and all kneereplacements implanted, shows that thecustom knee implant has the lowestinfection rate and lowest re-operation rateof any implant.

It stands to reason: If you make theimplant to recreate the patient’s individualshape and size, you avoid the reasons weknow lead to residual pain and stiffness. And most insurers cover the implant as itdoesn’t cost any more than off-the-shelfvarieties. So for the latest kneereplacement technology proven toimprove function by following form, thechoice is clearly iTotal by Conformis, exclusively designed and available at STAROrthopaedics.

Total knee replacement has beenpopular since the early 1970s. Atfirst, surgeons worked to prove that

it provided pain relief. But there was an issuewith the limited number of implant sizes, somanufacturers catalogued the variety ofsizes of the human femur and tibia bonesthat make up the knee. Based on averages, most manufacturers offer eight to 10 sizes, all with a single shape, and the surgeonchooses the best fit during surgery.

During the 1980s, surgeons andresearchers focused on developingaccurate instruments to shape the boneand make the operation reproducible inmost surgeons’ hands. Fortunately, thesetools were quite good and are commonlyused today. But during the 1990s, welearned that some manufacturingtechniques resulted in implants thatweren’t durable. Surgeons and researchersthen focused on how to improve durability,

with good success. Today’s implants areexpected to last 20 to 30 years.

Over the past two decades, we’ve foundthat 15 to 20 percent of knee-replacementpatients have residual pain and stiffness, and thus are dissatisfied with their surgery.Clearly, we need to improve that rate.Research has revealed several potentialissues: implants that are too small canresult in instability and pain; implants thatare too large can result in stiffness and pain;mal-positioned implants can cause painand stiffness; if the metal overhangs pastthe bone, it impinges on the surroundingtissue, causing pain and stiffness; if theimplant shape is too different from thepatient’s natural bone shape, it causesstiffness. Thus, to achieve better outcomes,we need to be more accurate in positioningimplants. Implants need to fit the bone wellwithout overhang, and they need torecreate the natural shape of the patient’sbone so that the replaced knee can movemore like a native knee.

To make the operation more accurate,we first tried intra-operative computersand robots, but the patient dissatisfactionrate was unchanged. We tried implantsthat could accommodate higher degrees off lexion, but the dissatisfaction rate was stillunchanged. Then we tried more sizes ofimplants. Again the dissatisfaction rate wasunchanged. We even tried betteranesthesia and pain control, but—youguessed it—the same 15 to 20 percent ofpatients remained unhappy due to residualpain and stiffness. The only logicalconclusion was that the metal and plasticimplants, as designed, were the rate-limiting factor.

In response, a group of surgeons, alongwith a small implant manufacturer named

Coachella Valley is also a hit with thosesearching for a quiet, remote environmentwhile remaining within easy reach of cityconveniences. La Quinta, Indio andCoachella are home to sprawlingproperties that offer privacy and room toroam. Some present a rustic country vibe, while others are luxurious estatescomplete with putting greens, lakes, guesthouses and more.

Families looking for an idealneighborhood in which they can raise theirkids, live close to excellent schools andbuild lasting friendships with neighborsalso have many options. Cathedral City,Palm Springs, Indio and Bermuda Dunesfeatures a variety of single-family-homeneighborhoods that are within minutes ofshopping, schools, restaurants and sportsparks.

You’re going to need a moment. That’s all you can say whengazing upon the new Bugatti Chiron. A moment for theChiron is a lifetime for other lesser machines.

The Chiron delivers 1,479 horsepower in its 8.0 liter, 16-cylinder engine. Yes, you read that correctly: 1,479 horsepower.

Now take a moment to consider these startling facts: TheChiron will accelerate from 0-62 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, 0-124 mph in less than 6.5 and 0-186 mph in under 13.6. At aconstant top speed, the Chiron will drain its entire fuel tank in nineminutes.

The Chiron replaces Bugatti’s Veyron model, but it’s no stand-in.Rather, it carves a new legacy for the family name. In fact, it unseatedthe Veyron as the fastest production car ever made, clocking anastonishing 304 mph after a weeklong series of test runs.

“We have shown several times that we build the fastest cars inthe world,” says Stephen Winkelmann, Bugatti president, in theofficial release on the record. “Bugatti was the first to exceed 300mph. Its name will go down in the history books and it will stay thatway forever.”

The Chiron goes big—and that may be the understatement of2020. More than 60,000 liters of air per minute are pumpedthrough the engine via cooling ducts and fans. Ten radiators pumpmore than 800 liters of coolant per minute through the Chironengine housing.

The tires are uniquely made for the Bugatti. The 20-inchwheels in the front and 21-inch in the back are also wider than the

Veyron’s. They must withstand up to 3.8Gs of force from the monster beneath thehood. We’re talking a rocket on wheels.Much of that force is created by fourturbos working together through 70percent of the engine’s operating RPM. Inother words, when you punch it, you go.No questions asked.

Those turbos, combined with state-of-the-art exhaust, are the recipe for powerdelivered. The exhaust is made fromtitanium. Six tail pipes rid the car of backpressure, four terminating out the rear ofthe car and two exiting directly under thecar to create more down force. This samedesign structure was banned in Formula 1racing machines.

The electronic steering is a thing ofgenius, more the Einstein type thanMichelangelo. Seven algorithms combineto make the rack respond exactly as itshould at 200-plus miles per hour. The all-wheel-drive shuff les the power betweenwheels so there’s no need to think aboutwhich tire is losing grip and which isholding. The Chiron puts it all together toshow the world that another level inautomotive experience exists.

Imagine the sound of four turbochargers whirring and the W16 growling. The sound of the Chiron has beendescribed as everything from angry tonaughty. Both are probably excellentdescriptors and the split personality is a

compliment in this setting. The Chiron’sbrilliant sound dampening and glazedwindows do their best to keep the rightamount of “angry” out while cruising. However, as the owner of a Chiron, youwant the world to know that this gentlebeast is capable of something shocking.

In an elegant move, Bugatti chose tomake the speedometer analog. It tops outat an even 500 KM/H, 310 MPH. The restof the cabin is a stylized, minimalist work ofart. The stereo system is literally diamondplated; the tweeters use a diamond ring toamplify the right notes. The electronics areintuitive and beautiful and the cabin is evenfunctional, which is saying somethingcompared to other cars at 1/10th thehorsepower.

Owning a Chiron will be a moment inthe imagination for most. The price tag ofover $3 million—again you may need amoment to process that information—putsthe car into the category of unicorns andsnow leopards. Bugatti will make fewer than500 for the entire production model. Thecompany says 120 are already accountedfor. If you’re lucky, you’ll see one on the streetand recognize it as something so rare thatyou’ll take a moment to admire it. _______________________________

The human brain is wired tofunction by habit. One of thesehabits is to acquire items like

luggage, handbags, designer clothing, furniture and jewelry, exhaust their useuntil they are worn and finally discard orreplace them. When Jim Shreve, president, CEO, Baccarat North America, took the helm at his position in New YorkCity nearly four years ago, he realized thatsuch is not the case with fine crystal. Whenit comes to ornamental crystal bowls, glassware and décor, he observed thatthese pieces were being coveted to thepoint of rarely seeing the light of day frominside the storage cabinet.

Shreve embarked on a refocus toencourage people to use Baccarat crystal intheir everyday lives. True, there was a linecalled Everyday Baccarat, but he took themessaging further by reframing theBaccarat product line into something

compatible with a seize-the-day lifestyleapproach.

Whether it’s “for a smoothie, a glass oforange juice or Scotch, Baccarat should beused to drink out of, not just look at,”Shreve says. Many people wait for thatfancy occasion before bringing out thequality serving ware. The reality is,according to Shreve, we don’t know whattomorrow holds in store. That specialevent may never happen, making it all themore important that we live every day likeit’s a celebration, especially with finecrystal.

Baccarat crystal has a rich history, having started in Lorraine, France, in 1764.Its crystal blowers, cutters, engravers andgilders have been honing their skills toattain sheer perfection for 255 years, andevery piece of full-lead crystal is made byhand. The glamourous designs of Baccaratlight up and accessorize the interiors of

some of the world’s most exquisite hotels, restaurants and public spaces, includingThe Studio Harrods in London, TheBaccarat Hotel in New York, George VHotel in Paris and Restaurant Luis Dias inCologne, in addition to numerous privateresidences, yachts and jets.

One other prominent showcase for thebeauty of Baccarat is on center court each

March at the award ceremonies ofchampionship matches at the BNP ParibasOpen in Indian Wells, California. A solidlead-crystal “Shooting Star” trophy, weighing close to 40 lbs. and valued at$45,000 retail, is presented to each maleand female champion, thanks to apartnership between Baccarat and thetournament formed 15 years ago.Spectators can again expect to see thestunning trophies awarded at the 2020BNP Open championships, in addition to adisplay of prominent chandelierspositioned on the court for the trophyceremonies.

According to Shreve, the productsmost adored by American customersinclude the Papillon Lucky Butterf ly(available in 11 colors); barware from theHarmonie collection; and vases, votives, frames and lamps from the Eye Collection.

Shreve notes that Baccarat CEO,Daniela Riccardi, has given him latitude toexert his creativity, especially inreawakening the American interest in thebrand. “It’s a process of looking differentlyat the things in our homes, and in essenceeveryone becomes an ambassador forBaccarat,” he says. “It’s exciting to see thepositive inf luence that results.”

Working with large retailers such asNeiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Geary’sand others helps clients to visualize a guide

for using fine crystal, augmenting the revival. “Our team is proud tohelp serve as style editors for homeware,” he notes, “to help makesure people are comfortable mixing and matching styles and colorsof crystal. It’s easier to implement when it’s modeled in a templatethat can be customized.”

In an era of mass production, Baccarat has maintained itstradition of hand-crafted elegance and excellence. The global brand

remains synonymous with luxury but should never be consideredprecious. The team behind its success wants to banish the conceptof “don’t touch.”

As Shreve says, “Every day is all we have.” Words to live by andcheers to a resplendent new habit.
