has researched the biographies of people to be interviewed; to Heather Huyck who provided oral history techniques and training, to Lorrie Rogers who researched transcription services; and to all those who have already conducted oral history interviews —Jim Rogers, Sue Evans, Charlie Clapper, and Don Zelman. These interviews begin to provide a different perspective on Collington, its history, and people. This project is intended to be an ongoing and lasting gift from the 30th anniversary. We appreciate everyone who has assisted us and especially those individuals who have been generous with their time and been interviewed. We’ve now interviewed six people and want a variety of voices in our history. Thirty years from now these interviews will be precious – – and probably even before then! If you’re interested in being part of this project, please contact Larry Harris at [email protected]. Happy Birthday, Collington! retired from Trinity, Wall Street, New York City before coming to Collington. Come spend a delightful hour with her and learn about the extraordinary gift of our David Moore organ. VETERINARIAN AT COLLINGTON: Our Collington Veterinarian will be here on November 5. If you wish a doctor’s visit, you must call for an appointment. Call the Pet Committee Chair, Pat Kirkham and state why with enough information to give to the Vet, so your pet’s previous file(this does not apply to a new animal patient) and correct equipment can accompany both the Vet and her technician on the day of their visit. It is important to call for the appointment at least three days before so the number of animal patients can be known before-hand by the Vet team. In advance, my thanks and I await your call. - Pat Kirkham, x7292. SAVE THE DATE: District 4000 will meet at 11AM on Monday, October 22. We will hear from Jerome Perry, the new director of facilities. PARTY BRIDGE: If there is a bridge person at Collington who would like to play (party bridge) on Saturday afternoon please call Peg McQuarrie at x7593. PET POLICY: It has again come to my attention that some residents (living not only in apartments but within all four districts and villas, both within various clusters and behind, around all the open areas) are letting mainly cats out whenever they or their owners wish their animals to be out and free. This continues to be not only a problem for those residents without any animals of their own but is also against the Collington regulations stated now many times in the Courier All dogs, cats, and any other like animal must be leashed. It is as simple as this. If those who are affected continue with this behavior, I will have already discussed this situation with security. The regulation is as important for the health of our community, as is the picking up of one’s animal’s waste product, which also continues as a happening against

another Collington regulation. If anyone has a complaint in return I am more than happy to listen, debate, and discuss. -Thank you. POST-ITS AND NOTEPADS: What a response! Thanks to you we are now well stocked. HELPFUL HINT FROM THE LIBRARY: If you cannot find your card in the Author File, just put your returning book in the Return Book box and someone will take care of it. OVERDUE NOTICES: Expect to see one in your mail slot any time after October 22nd if you have had a book signed out before July 1st. Either return it or renew it now. WEIGHT WATCHERS AT COLLINGTON: A Weight Watches (now WW) professional leader will join us weekly in the privacy and convenience of the Collington campus, when a total of 15 residents and Village neighbors express an interest. We now need eight more. So, let's join each other, meeting in a Collington classroom, to learn from and support each other. Call resident Jeannie Bessmer at ext. 7283 or email her at [email protected]. And Kim Rivers, the Vitalize 360 Coach, has contacted WW Corporate, helping us make this a reality. COMMUNITY OUTREACH: The Community Outreach Committee and the Bowie Food Bank thank all the kind Collington residents who have so generously contributed food and toiletries to those who struggle with budgets that do not always stretch to some basic needs. So please continue putting a few extra items in your grocery shopping cart. It makes all the difference to those in need. -Nadine Hathaway and Gretta Estey Community Outreach Committee Food Bank GOOD READS IN OUR LIBRARY: It’s WW ll. fighter appears alongside—and escorts the B-17 to safety beyond the German ack-ack guns. Why? Read the story in “A Higher Calling,” by Adam Makos. Find the book in our library’s History-US WW ll section. Do you know that elephants can climb? “Elephant Company” by Vicki Constantine Croke tells the story of this feat and others in her inspiring story of elephants saving lives and helping turn the war tide in Burma during WW ll. The first part of the book sets the background for the war years. You can find this book in the History-USWW ll section of our library. FROM THE COUNTRY STORE: So Little Ms Muffett sat on her Tuffett til the days of the month were near gone. Then she went to the store thinking to buy more but all the shelves were bare. She sat on her Tuffett and cried and cried thinking it all unfair. But she could have gone early and then most surely her larder would not be so spare.

Yoo-hoo…..Holiday Bazaar? The annual holiday bazaar is fast approaching, and I have not heard from many people as to whether or not they want to participate, need a table (or more than one), will be contributing items to sell (e.g. baked goods, other food, crafts, etc.) and if anyone would like to volunteer to wo/man the tables. As always, most of the proceeds go to the Residents’ Association; the cost of materials may be retained by the participants. The Auditorium is reserved for Friday, 9 November from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM for the 2018 Holiday Bazaar. Tables will be set up by 9:00, so those dropping off food, etc. can do so between 9:00 and 10:00. Please let me know ASAP, if you have not done so already, if you are contributing items and if you will need a table (or two), so I can plan the layout and give the information to Jerome and Charlene. And, if you told me in passing in a hallway, please tell me again. Many thanks. Maja (I Live to Nag) Keech [email protected] Cottage 2004, x7253
