College Recruiting Handbook Premier is the leader in college placement for high school basketball players in the RockyMountainRegion.
Thispackethasbeencreatedforyourconveniencetohelpguideyouthroughanimportanttime in your life. Continuing your academic and athletic career requires atremendousamountofwork.While thisrecruitingpacket can assist you through the college recruitingandadmissionsprocess,YOUarethegeneratingforcetoassurethatthenecessarytasksgetaccomplished.The coachesat Premierarealwayshere tohelp.The successof thisprocessalsodependsuponrealisticevaluationsofyourability,bothintheclassroomandonthecourt.
Thekeystosuccessaresimple.Firstofall,youhavetobeproactive.Takesomeinitiativeandputyourselfouttheretocolleges.Sendemails,makephonecalls,andvisitschools.Don’twaitforaschooltocontactyoufirst.Secondly,youhavetoberealistic.NotallplayerscanplayattheDivision I level. Fortunately, therearedifferent levelsof collegebasketball. Finding therightfitforyouisveryimportant.Finally,followtheenclosedgameplan.Itisdesignedtogiveyouthebestchancetogetnoticedandgetrecruited.

Berealistic-CanIcompeteatthecollegelevel?
Let'sberealistic. Collegesportpositionsandathleticscholarshipsaren'tavailabletoeveryone.YoushouldbeawarethatmoststudentathleteswillNOTbeabletoplayDivisionIsports.TherearetoomanyathletesandonlysomanyDivision1schools.However,thevastmajorityofcollegesoruniversitiesarenotDivision1schoolsandtheyhaveverycompetitivesportsprograms.
Youwillhavetomeetsomeimportantconditionstogettothenextlevel.Youmaybethe“star”athleteatyourhighschool,butyouwillneedtoknowhowyoumatchupwithotherstarhighschoolathletesaroundthecountry. You’llneedtoevaluateyouracademicandathleticabilitiesand determinewhat division level student athlete you are so you can target the right schoolswhereyouhavethebestchanceofreceivinganathleticscholarshiporincentivepackage.
Askallofyourcoachesandothersyouknowthatwillbehonestandcandidwithyou.Askthemwhat they think of your athletic abilities and at what division level they believe you couldcompetein.Youmayfindthatthetruthhurts,orperhapsyou’llbesurprisedtofindthatyouhaveunderestimatedyourabilities.Thisisacriticalfirststepintheprocess.Youmaywasteyourtimeif you focus your efforts on colleges in the wrong athletic division and with the incorrectacademicrequirements. Youwanttomakesureyouaretargetingtherightacademicschoolsintherightathletictalentdivision.
To compete at the college level, coaches are looking for a student athlete who possesses theapplicable academic and sport specific tools. After that, they look at character and mentaltoughnessthatmakeupthewill-to-winattitude following failure,performanceunderpressure,andrespectforfamilyandteammates.

Averysmallpercentageofhighschoolstudentathletesreceivecollegeopportunities,scholarshipsorincentivepackagesbecausethecoach“happenedtofindthem.”Onlytheeliteathletes,generallythetop100nationally,receiveenoughmediacoverageandrecognitionthattheyareautomaticallyrecruitedwithouthavingtomakeaneffort.Theother99%havetotaketheinitiativetocontactthecollegesandcoacheswheretheyhaveaninterest.
Most schools’ recruiting budgets are small, and coaches rely on YOU to contact them. Collegecoachesareverybusy;theydon’thavethetimeorbudgettotravelaroundthecountrytoseeyoucompete.Phonecalls,emails,CaptainU,stats,videoandreferencesbecomekeytoolsforthecoachintherecruitingandevaluatingprocess.Youmightthinkthatit’stooself-promotingtomaketheinitialcontactwithacoachandto“market”yourself,however,thisisthenorm.Ifyoudon’tdoit,otherstudentathleteswilltakeadvantageoftheopportunity,getnoticedandgetrecruitedbecausetheyhavemadetheeffortandreceivedtheattention.
College Coaches expect you to prepare academically. They expect that you understand thatpreparation academically is of primary importance to the recruiting process. This meanspreparingintheclassroomasmuchasonthefield.Failuretotakecareofyouracademicstandingoftenmeansfailuretoachieveathleticgoals. Asanexample,sinceDivisionIIIinstitutionsdonotofferathleticscholarships,academicperformance is justasvaluedasathleticperformance intherecruitingprocess.

Keepinmindmostcoachesareworkingwithlimitedbudgetsandverylittletime,staffandresources.Youhave tobepersistent,prepared, andpolite togetnoticedat anydivision. Ifnothingelse, everycoachwantsplayerswhocanenhancetheirprogram.Characterisakeycomponentofintegrity.Showyourcharacter!
•Beaneffectivecommunicator.Thestudentathlete(NOTTHEPARENTS)shouldwriteoremailthecoachwhenappropriate.Thestudentathleteshouldalwayscallthecoachbackwhentheycallyou.
•Littlethingscount.Besuretoreviewyourlettersand/ore-mailmessagesandspelltheirnameandtheirschool’snamecorrectly.
•Behonest.Ifyouareinterestedintheirprogram,tellthem.Ifnot,sayso.Don’twastetheirtimeoryours.
•Provideyourcontactinformation.Makesuretonotewhenyouareavailable.Shareyourcellphonenumberande-mailaddress.
•CompleteApplications.Follow-up;sendgradesandteacherrecommendationstoschoolsinwhichyouhaveaninterest.Getallthepaperworktakencareofasearlyaspossible.
•BePrepared.Prepareyourquestionsforthemsowhentheycallorwhenyouvisityou’reprepared,andhavesomethingtotalkabout.Thisshowsthatyouareinterested.

GAMEPLANCONTINUEDTheNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation(NCAA)governsthreedivisionsofcollegeathleticsand requires that students interested in playing on either Division I or Division II teams fileformsforcertificationofathleticeligibility.
TheformandtheNCAAGuidefortheCollegeBoundStudentAthlete,apublicationthatexplainstherulesandregulationsthatgovernrecruiting,eligibility,andfinancialaid,canbefoundattheNCAAwebsite atwww.ncaa.org. Studentswhowant to participate in Division I or Division IIsportsshouldstartthecertificationprocessbySeptemberoftheirsenioryear.Theprocedureisasfollows:IfyouwishtoparticipateinDivisionIorDivisionIIsports,youmustsubmityourSAT/ACTscoresdirectlytotheClearing-house.TheClearing-housecodeis9999.Youmustfillouta“DomesticStudentReleaseForm”(SRF)inSeptemberofyoursenioryear. NCAAELIGIBILITYFAQsCONTINUEDCanstudentshavetheregistrationfeewaived?Students who have received a waiver for the SAT or ACT are eligible for a waiver of theregistration fee. NationalLetterofIntent:ANational Letter of Intent (NLI) is signed by a PSAwhen the student-athlete agrees toattend a Division I or II college or university for one academic year. Participatinginstitutionsagreetoprovidefinancialaidforoneacademicyeartothestudent-athleteaslongasthestudent-athleteisadmittedtotheschoolandiseligibleforfinancialaidunderNCAArules.Otherformsoffinancialaiddonotguaranteethestudent-athletefinancialaid.TheNationalLetterofIntentisvoluntaryandnotrequiredforastudent-athletetoreceivefinancialaidorparticipateinsports.SigningaNationalLetterofIntentendstherecruitingprocess since participating schools are prohibited from recruiting student-athleteswhohave already signed letters with other participating schools.
