Name _____________________________________________ Date: _______________English I Period _______English I Personal Playlist Project
Unit 5: The Construction of Identity and Family Values: MemoirEssential Questions:
What is the purpose and value of writing a memoir? What is the significance of personal history on an individuals self-awareness? What significance does the past have on the present and future? How do events in our past effect our growth and development into adulthood? How do cultural and societal norms affect our view of the community in which we are a partof? Why does McBride use interwoven voices in writing his memoir? What was the value of self-reliance in African American and Jewish culture? What informs ones search for identityand how does exclusion based on race affect that
identity? What are some effects of keeping secrets?
Music is often an essential part of cultural and individual expression. Music speaks to the individual
in the same way that the individual speaks through music. As a way to reflect what James McBride
shared about his mothers and his own life through his memoir, you are going to make a music
playlist for either Ruth or James that reflects their own personality, problems they experienced and
the world that they lived in throughout The Color of Water. Then you will write a one page ( 500
word) justification for the songs that you included on your playlist.DUE: Wednesday, February 29thRequirements:
Choose a character on which to focus your playlist and writing - Rachel Shilsky/ RuthMcBride OR James McBride.
Compose and burn a music playlist of at least 8 songs that you believe reflect anaspect of your characters personality and life.
Write a one page analysis of the character playlist in CCEJEJ structure that justifieseach track why you selected the track and how it reflects the characters
personality, problems and/ or setting. The songs may also reflect a universal theme
that you feel applies to your character.
EX:Claudia MacTeers Playlist includes a track like Firework by Katy Perry because Claudia is an
independent thinker for her time. She would enjoy the message of a song that suggest that you are
beautiful just the way you are. Claudia would also share this message with her sister and Pecola
because she knows that they internalized the self-loathing of the time in their loveof Shirley Temple.
Claudia recognizes that they would need encouragement to accept themselves and reject what the
world around them is teaching them to think about their appearance.
