No.11 Principal’s Update

Dear Families, Students and

Community members

Successful Open Events

Last week we held two very

success ful open events for

prospective students and parents, with up to 300 visitors to our Open

Afternoon in the Year 7 Learning

Centre on Saturday 16 April and over 400 visitors to our Open Night to see

the whole school in action on Tuesday 19 April. The success of

such events is testament to our sense of community where staff,

students and parent representatives

from our College Council all played important roles at these events. The

level of support and enthusiasm from all involved was extremely positive

and affirming. My sincere thanks to

Mr George Tzimourtas, Director of Middle School and Miss Jennifer

Roep, Assistant Principal who were the main organisers. I would also like

to thank all staff for their attendance

out of school hours for both events and for organising some terrific

displays and highly engaging interactive workshops; to all the

students who acted as tour guides or assisted with the interactive

workshops, they were so proud to

showcase their school; and to the

parent representatives from College

Council, who were very enthusiastic and proud to speak about Mordialloc

College to prospective parents.

A special thanks to our student

speakers in the formal presentation

part of the evening. They all did an outstanding job articulating what it

means to them to be a student of

Mordialloc College. Congratulations to Jure Plestina and Gabrielle Howes

speaking in their capacity as School Captains; Tahlia Peacock and Liam

Johnson representing the Year 7

cohort and speaking so well about their experiences to date; and Sam

Bloxham representing Year 7 SEAL and Alex Vujicic, Dilara Isikli and

Annie Ea representing the Year 10 SEAL class and speaking at the SEAL

presentations.

Please see the feedback summary on

page 5 containing lots of positive comments from prospective parents.

Congratulations to Lisa Holloway who won the $100 Myer gift voucher. She

was one of many who went into the draw for completing the learning

journey passport on the night.

On Thursday 21 April we held the

SEAL entrance exam and we were

again overwhelmed with the interest in this program and the very high

calibre of applicants.

Curiosity and Powerful Learning

Mordialloc College is part of the “Improving Practice, Improving

Outcomes” Project over the next

three to five years. Wayne Craig (McREL International and former

Regional Director) is the project manager for the life of the project

and it is being partly funded by the

Myer Foundation. Last year we formally signed an agreement with

the Mitchell Institute in partnership with Monash University to join this

project along with 100 other schools across four networks in Victoria and

Queensland. The Curiosity and

Powerful Learning initiative provides an excellent framework that is

researched and evidence based. Leadership teams across all schools

have participated in a number of

Professional Development days leading to the development of

implementation action plans. We are part of the Monash network of

schools which includes a number of

our feeder pr imary schools promoting greater alignment of

Teaching & Learning practices.

A key strength of this project for

Mordialloc College is that it is going

to build upon the work we have already been doing with staff as part

of our Professional Development

program for the past five years on our Instructional Model and coaching

program and this project will become the focus for us for the next three to

five years. We have achieved so much over the past 5 years which we

can all be proud of and this is the

next step in our journey of continuous improvement.

Continued from page 1

Mordialloc College will also become a

teaching academy (thus a teaching school for future teachers!) through

our involvement in this project in

partnership with Monash University. We have two pre-service teachers

who are volunteering to spend one day a week in the school for a year on

top of their block placements. Lyn Ockerby (Maths, Science – Physics)

has been assigned to the Year 8 team

and Georgia Davey (Engl ish, Psychology) to the Year 7 team as an

extra resource for staff and students.

The Curiosity and Powerful Learning

initiative provides an opportunity for

us to revisit key aspects of our Instructional Model over the next 3 to

5 years with a six month focus on

precision of teacher practice across each theory of action. As such, it will

be the main focus for our whole school PD staff workshops on a

Tuesday afternoon and will see the

introduction of new triad coaching model.

There are four whole school theories

of action: High Expectations & Authentic Relationships, Inquiry

Focused Teaching, Consistent Teaching Protocols and Consistent

Learning Protocols; and six theories of

action for teachers; Harnessing Learning Intentions, Narrative and

Pace, Set Challenging Learning Tasks, Frame Higher Order Questions,

Connect Feedback to Data, Commit to

Assessment for Learning and Implement Cooperative Groups.

Our first area of focus for 2016 has

been on High Expectations and Authentic Relationships. Late last year

all parents and students were sent a link to a short survey which we used

to establish some baseline data. We

had 116 parent responses and 327 student responses and although the

data overall was very positive at a whole school level, this year all

teachers have administered a student pe r ce p t i on su r vey on H i g h

E xpe c t a t i o n s a nd A u t he n t i c

Relationships to identify areas to improve upon at a class by class level.

Teachers are about to begin our first round of triad coaching visits to get

feedback on identified areas they

would like to improve upon.

When schools and teachers prioritise

high expectations and authentic

relationships then curiosity will flourish. It will increase a student’s

feeling of confidence and curiosity, energising their commitment to

learning. High achievement by every

student depends on the environment we create for learning. We need to

provide positive learning environments that are optimistic and rigorous,

valuing all students through building authentic relationships. It is important

that all students are treated in the

same way and that we have high expectations of all students so that

they can achieve to their potential. High expectations are challenging,

demanding and constant and can only

be sustained within a school’s culture when relationships are authentic, thus

reliable, transparent, supportive and respectful. They are also consistent –

being modelled, practiced and reinforced across the whole school.

High expectations apply to all

members of the school community, students, teachers and parents and

we are all responsible for maintaining authentic relationships.

Cross Country

On Wednesday 20 April the College

Cross Country was held on a very

warm and sunny autumn afternoon. Congratulations go to Yerlonga (Blue

House) on their great win, closely followed by Kalura (Green House). It

was a terrific contest between the

four houses with a high participation rate across the whole school, and

shows how important it is to participate to the best of your ability

whether running or walking the course. Congratulations to Sports

Coordinators, Cory Watters and Tim

Wischusen, for their excellent organisation of this event and all

students and staff for their positive involvement during the afternoon.

House and individual results are continued on page 4.

Anzac Day Assembly

On Tuesday 26th April, the College

held a whole school assembly to

recognise Anzac Day and to commemorate the 101st year of the

landing at Gallipoli. This was run by

our School Captains and Middle School captains, including the readings and

PowerPoint presentation. They did a wonderful job and I congratulate all

students for their exemplary behaviour during the assembly.

N A P L A N : N a t i o n a l Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy

On the mornings of Tuesday 10,

Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May all students in Years 7 and 9 will be

sitting the national tests in Reading, Wr i t i ng , Spe l l i ng , Grammar ,

Punctuation and Numeracy. It is

important that students treat these tests seriously and strive to achieve

their Personal Best.

The results will be used to:

help teachers identify students

who require greater challenges

or additional support

help the College identify

strengths and if any gaps in

teaching programs and to set goals in Literacy and Numeracy

provide additional feedback to

students and parents about individual achievements and

progress

All parents of students in Year 7 and 9

will receive a NAPLAN report on their child’s progress later this year. The

report is only one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting

process, and does not replace the more extensive and informed

judgements made about your child by

teachers.
