Department of Human & Clinical Anatomy

PhD in Human & Clinical Anatomy The Department of Human and Clinical Anatomy serves three major functions: the performance of current topical anatomical research, the preparation of graduate students for scientific careers within academia and other related fields, and the teaching of anatomy of the human body to health professionals in training (medical, nursing, and allied health sciences students, Postgraduate residents).

The MSc in Biomedical science (Human Anatomy) has been developed to provide postgraduate training in human anatomy and is intended for students graduating from life science (such as BSc Anatomy, MD, MBBS) and related disciplines who wish to extend their knowledge of anatomy and/or who wish to pursue a career in the anatomical sciences. The primary aim of the programme is to educate and train individuals in human gross anatomy. The programme will be delivered using a combination of traditional methods and guided self-directed learning in which students use and develop transferable and subject-specific skills. The programme fulfils the requirements of a higher degree by ensuring that the students possess autonomy early in their studies to maximise their interests and develop new skills.

This two-year taught Masters programme provides a solid foundation in human anatomy as a basis for teaching as well as basic and applied research. It considers all aspects of gross anatomy, histology and embryology through direct examination and contextualization.

Department of Biochemistry

PhD in Biochemistry The PhD program in Biochemistry is open to holders of master (MSc) degrees, MD and MBBS subject to English proficiency tests, as well as other screening procedures. The latter would include a departmental interview and, in some cases, a qualifying oral examination. The program is based primarily on research, with the addition of limited coursework where deficiencies are identified by the Thesis Supervisory Committee (TSC). It includes at least three years of full-time supervised research and will also include the presentation of a detailed thesis proposal, and at least two seminars. Research includes genetics of single gene disorders, polygenic disease such as diabetes mellitus, obesity, inborn errors of metabolism and malaria parasites. Lipid metabolism, nutrition and antioxidant projects are also offered. Candidates are required to register on a full-time basis, and pay annual fees, which might be supported from a faculty member’s research grant or scholarship. In addition to national students, international students are encouraged to enroll in the programs. At successful completion of the program, PhD students are required to produce a thesis containing original work of suitable merit that demonstrates their command of the relevant research methodology and ability to undertake independent research.
