Message from Chairman Board of Governors Bacha Khan Medical College

Pakistan faces an acute shortage of different cadres of healthcare workers, which is bound to

escalate further because of high population growth rate, inequitable distribution and out-

migration of the healthcare workforce. Along with members of other disciplines, the role of

Allied Health Professionals is equally imperative in the delivery of healthcare and

related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases

and disorders. All health professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care

as members of an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice,

quality improvement approaches, and informatics.

In this regard, BKMC added a new pillar in the field of health services and medical education

by initiating College of Medical Technology. I really appreciate the determined efforts of all

members associated with the College of Medical Technology, Mardan in any capacity. I assure

my continuous help and support to the College.

INTRODUCTION:

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is the pioneer field of Allied Health Sciences which basically deals with Laboratory investigation in terms of diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases. With the current advancement in the field of science and technology, MLT has also evolved greatly. Initially, there used to be 6 months training to become a certified laboratory technician. Then, in 1961 for the first time a School of Medical Technology was established in Pakistan by the government in order to meet with the increasing demand of well educated, trained and competent laboratory personnel.

The Significance of MLT can be understood from the fact that around 70% of all decisions regarding diagnosis, treatment, admission in the hospitals and discharge are solely based on the laboratory results. In UK, the workforce of Laboratory personnel along with other allied health professionals comprises of only 5% but their work underpins around 80% of entire diagnosis and clinical decision.

CAREER:

A Medical Laboratory Technologist (now a days known as Medical Laboratory Scientist) possesses advance knowledge and skills and perform complex test or assays. Laboratory Technologists may be Generalists or a Specialists depending upon the skills and lab they are working in. As per reports, majority of the technologists work fulltime in hospital’s laboratory, reference and research labs or private labs. However, they may also have opportunities of employment in forensic, food and environmental labs. Moreover, numerous manufacturer and supplier of laboratory equipment and diagnostic kits also prefer experience Technologists for development of new products, sales and marketing of their products.

CMT offers a four-year BS MLT program, where students will strongly be educated theoretically along with a robust emphasis on developing practical skills via rigorous training in the different labs of Mardan Medical Complex in order to meet the required challenges of modern health care system.

INTRODUCTION

The Anesthesiologist is often only a vaguely remembered actor from the surrealistic scenes

that precede and follow surgery. With all the powers of Morpheus, the Greek god of sleep and

dreams, the anesthesiologist seems to delight in his role as he smiles down on his vulnerable

patients. Anesthesia was used in 95% of Civil War surgeries. Sulfuric ether had been

discovered in Europe in the 1830's and was first used as an anesthetic in 1846.

The Significance of Anesthesia enables the painless performance of medical procedure that

would otherwise cause severe or intolerable pain to an unanesthetized patient, or would

otherwise be technically unfeasible. Modern medicine would not be possible without

anesthesia. The Department of Anesthesiology provides state-of-the-art-care for patients

undergoing all types of surgical procedures. Because the discipline has become so specialized,

we have subspecialty trained anesthesia Technologist available in areas such as Cardiac,

General, Gynae & Obs, Critical care, Neuro-anesthesia, Pain medicine and trauma.

CAREER:

Career in Anesthesiology is one of the most useful areas in the field of healthcare. There are

many job opportunities for the Anesthesia Technologist. They will get the employment in

medical universities, public sectors, outpatient care center, specialty hospital, Operation

Theater (OR,OT), Post-op Recovery room, Emergency Room, Intensive care Unit, Emergency

Ambulatory Vehicle. After gaining experience, one can work as a teacher in the area of

anesthesiology in national & international universities.

CMT offers a four-year BS Anesthesia Program. The mission of the Department of

Anesthesiology is to advance the CMT of BKMC Mardan by providing the best technologist,

and by advancing the field of anesthesiology through our educational and research efforts. The

Department of Anesthesiology values visionary leadership at all ranks that promotes and

safeguards an organizational culture of respect for all individual’s collaboration and shared

knowledge among all caregivers.

INTRODUCTION

Radiology is the field of Allied Health Sciences which uses X rays, gamma rays, and other forms

of ionizing radiation in the treatment of diseases. In more recent years, radiology has come

to embrace diagnosis by a method of organ scanning with the use of radioactive isotopes and

nonionizing radiations, such as ultrasound and radiofrequency waves. Similarly, the scope of

radiotherapy has extended to include, in the treatment of cancer, such agents as hormones

and chemotherapeutic drugs.

The significance of Radiology can be understood from the disease management, with a wide

choice of tools and techniques available for the detection, staging and treatment. Diagnostic

imaging provides detailed information about structural or disease related changes. Early

diagnosis saves lives. Without diagnosis there can be no treatment, there can be no cure.

CAREER:

With an immediate and sustainable demand for educated radiologic technologists in

hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices, the field of radiography should continue to show

higher than average job growth into the future. Job seekers can stand out in a growing field

of qualified professionals by completing a four-year degree in radiology technology and by

gaining as much hands-on experience as possible prior to their career in radiology.

CMT (College of Medical Technology) offers four-year BS Radiology program, where the

students will completely educate theoretically as well as practically via proper training in the

different section of Radiology department in Mardan Medical Complex in order to meet the

required challenges of modern health care system.

INTRODUCTION

Cardiology Technology is an emerging field of Allied Health Sciences. It is the study of heart,

its functions, disorders and diseases associated with cardiovascular system. This field basically

utilizes invasive and non-invasive procedures for diagnostics, therapeutic and preventive

purposes in cardiovascular care. The main procedures involved in cardiology technology are

electrocardiography and stress ECG, echocardiography, electrophysiology, interventional

cardiology, preventive cardiology, nuclear cardiology, cardiopulmonary diseases and cardiac

surgery.

CAREER:

After successful completion of four years BS degree in cardiology technology, The Cardiology

technologists have opportunities both in universities and hospitals, as lecturer and clinically

as cardiology technologist to assist invasive procedures such as implanting cardiac catheters

during angiographic and angioplasty procedures, inserting pacemakers, assisting

electrophysiology procedures and assisting Cardiac surgeon during cardiac surgery.

Cardiology technologists also perform and report on noninvasive procedures such as

echocardiography, electrocardiography and exercise tolerance test (ETT). They will also be

able to work in all public and private sector hospital.

The CMT will be able to play a major role in producing professional Cardiac Technologist

through a taught course of four-year BS degree program in Cardiology Technology. During

studies the student will be allowed for clinical exposure in different hospitals to learn clinical

aspects of different diseases related to cardiology and to utilize their knowledge in diagnostic

procedures such as ECG, Echocardiography, ambulatory B.P monitoring, ECG Event/loop

Monitoring and angiography and stress testing etc.
