The College is pleased to announce that Dr. Don A. Dillman will be giving

the 2011 Tyner Lecture for the Department of Family and Child Sciences.

Dr. Dillman, founder of the Dillman Method of surveying, will be speaking

on The Future of Telephone, Mail and Internet Surveys.

For over 40 years, Dr. Dillman has conducted research programs on the improvement of survey

methods and how information technologies affect rural development. Social and Economic Sciences

Research Center at Washington State University reports in a biographical sketch, “He has served as

investigator on more than 80 grants and contracts worth approximately $12.5 million, and written 13

books and more than 235 other publications” (para. 3).

Dr. Kay Pasley, Chair of the Department of Family and Child Sciences and long-time friend of Dr.

Dillman says, “He is the person nationally and internationally known for survey research. When you

think of surveys, you think of the Dillman method.”

We look forward to seeing you in March.

Dear CHS Alumni and Friends,

As we begin a new academic year, we are excited about

new faces and activities around the College. Additions

to our faculty are highlighted and a new program and

institute in sports sciences are described in this issue.

All majors continue to be popular, with undergraduate

Dr. Wayne Denton

Dr. Wayne Denton, new Professor in Family and Child Sciences and the Director of

the Marriage and Family Therapy doctoral program, joins The College of Human

Sciences after 20 years on medical school faculties in North Carolina and Texas.

Denton is a board-certified psychiatrist as well as a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family

Therapy. He combines his two backgrounds by studying the role of the family,

particularly the marital/couple relationship, in health and illness, focusing on major

depressive disorders. In addition to his research, Denton says that being able to work

with graduate students, in his new role as Director of the Marriage and Family

Therapy doctoral program, is one of the main reasons he was eager to come to FSU. “I

have had the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of clinical and research

experiences and I look forward to sharing what I have learned with students at FSU,”

he adds. Denton looks forward to mentoring doctoral students towards developing clinical research careers

of their own.

Dr. Mark Kasper

Dr. Mark Kasper joins the College to direct the new Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine, as well as the M.S. major in Sports Sciences. Kasper has experience in exercise testing and training a variety of populations ranging from individuals with chronic diseases and illness, occupational fit-for-hire employees, and athletes of different abilities. He has also developed, implemented, and evaluated health education programs targeting the general public. Kasper has broad research interests in physical activity, exercise and health, athletic performance, tests and measurements, epidemiology, and health education. “We are very fortunate to have added Dr. Mark Kasper to the faculty of the Dept of Nutrition, Food, and Exercise Science. Already, his expertise and leadership have been demonstrated in the im-plementation and growth of several new initiatives including the Master's Degree in Exercise Science with a major in Sports Sciences, Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine, and Human Performance Lab at Mike Long Track. More importantly, Dr. Kasper has a sincere interest in students, program development and academic excellence. His professionalism, enthusiasm and sense of humor make every interaction with him enjoyable. I have no doubt that our Department and College will experience more success due to Dr. Kasper's positive contributions,” says Associate Director of ISSM, Dr. Angela Sehgal.

Dr. Michael Ormsbee Dr. Michael Ormsbee is a new Assistant Professor in Exercise Science in the

Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences. Ormsbee has a Ph.D. in

Bioenergetics from East Carolina University. He is also a Certified Sports

Nutritionist (CISSN) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA).

Ormsbee’s research has focused on training in eating to prevent obesity-related

diseases, achieving optimal body composition and optimizing athletic performance.

The College is excited to have Dr. Ormsbee on board and looks forward to his

contributions to the students and research. Ormsbee adds, “This is an exciting

college to be working in right now. Health and well-being are at the forefront of

national and international concern and I have the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best

and brightest minds in the field every day. It is a pleasure to be welcomed so warmly to CHS and FSU!”

The M.S. major in Sports Sciences provides

opportunities for students to gain advanced

knowledge and experience in sports sciences

through a combination of didactic instruction,

laboratory experiences, supervised practica, and

research projects oriented toward some aspect

of strength and conditioning, human & athletic

performance or athletic training.

"The Sports Sciences major combines course

work and practical experiences to prepare

graduate students to obtain a national credential as a sports science professional. The relationship

between the College of Human Sciences and the Athletic Department is pivotal in the success of this

program” says Michelle Garber, Associate Director of ISSM.

Some students in this program are currently Graduate Assistants for the FSU athletic department, ranging

from Athletic Trainers to Strength and Conditioning Coaches.

“The new Sports Sciences program will help provide the unique

blend of science and application necessary for those interested in

pursuing careers as Sports Medicine or Strength & Conditioning

professionals. The Florida State University now offers a unique

curriculum that will become the premier program in the nation

for those interested in sciences and it’s application to ath-

letes. The Sports Sciences program has already enhanced the

athletic department's graduate assistant Athletic Trainers and

Strength Coaches who are enrolled in the program,” adds Jon

Jost, Director of Strength and Condition, FSU.

ISSM The Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine (ISSM) serves as a multidisciplinary center for conducting research in sports sciences and medicine with an emphasis on athletic and human performance including the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. The Institute also provides educational outreach programs targeting the medical, scientific, and general community. "The Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine is a unique collaboration of scientists, practitioners (physicians, athletic trainers, therapists, coaches) and corporate members who come together to research human performance, injury prevention and long term health statuses of the active population," exclaims Michele Garber, Associate Director of ISSM.

Development

Support from our alumni donors has made it possible for the College to provide our students with the best

quality education for over 100 years. As we strive for excellence in Family & Child Sciences, Nutrition, Food

& Exercise Sciences, and Retail Merchandising and Product Development, your financial support enables

the College to prepare students to become inspired leaders of tomorrow. The College is helping to mold a

workforce of alumni that will help people function optimally in their everyday lives: interacting within

unique family dynamics, eating healthy and exercising (or not), spending within the tenets of consumer

responsibility and shopping with an eye for sustainability. We seek to not only discover and inform, but

also to motivate, engage with and support our community. We encourage our alumni and potential donors

to see the value of interventions and activities that lead to healthier lifestyles and a better use of individual

and family resources.

Currently, the College’s top fundraising priorities are:

Unrestricted operating funds are increasingly important as the College faces new budgetary challenges and deals with previous financial cuts. General support for students, with an emphasis on graduate students. Fellowships help us attract outstanding students pursuing graduate work and research opportunities. Scholarships and student resource funds allow us to provide merit scholarships for undergraduate students to offset their college expenses. Professorships to honor and reward faculty and Chairs to attract and retain outstanding educators and researchers as faculty members. Endowments for the centers and institutes at the College promote the research and extend the College’s outreach into the community, across the nation and around the globe.

Thank you for your tremendous support of the College of Human Sciences. We are inspired by your

passion for service and philanthropy to your alma mater!
