The major goal of this undergraduate program is to provide a degree in Clinical Leadership and Management (CLM) that will enable associate degree trained professionals to assume advanced leadership and managerial responsibilities in various healthcare settings. It also provides a bridge to graduate study in, for example, information technology, health services management, health policy or other careers. In addition, this program contributes to a more highly skilled healthcare workforce which ultimately serves patients better, resulting in improved quality of care. Historically, there have

been few opportunities in Kentucky for associate degree trained healthcare professionals to continue their undergraduate education and earn a baccalaureate degree in a health related discipline. This program allows trained healthcare professionals, for example, respiratory therapists, nurses, dental hygienists, who want to continue their studies on a graduate level to do so. The CLM program is also proud to offer coursework via distance learning to off-campus sites and offer evening courses so that students may work fulltime and complete their degree.

“Thanks to the diverse courses and leadership skills I acquired in the

Clinical Leadership and Management program, I now work as a leader in Clinical Informatics and have

continued on to Graduate School. One of the greatest aspects about the

program was that I could still work full-time and raise a young family

while completing my coursework. I appreciate everything the faculty and

program did to prepare me to be a clinical leader and to realize that there

are endless opportunities out there.”

Communication Sciences & Disorders

The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers both a pre-professional undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) and a masters degree program in speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathologists are healthcare professionals who evaluate and treat problems related to speech sound production, comprehension and production of language, voice, stuttering, swallowing, orofacial anomalies, and hearing for individuals across the lifespan. The program provides a student-run outpatient clinic as

well as inpatient and outpatient speech-language pathology servicesfor UK Chandler Medical Center and Kentucky Clinic. Students and faculty in this programare involved in the Rehabilitation Sciences Ph.D. program.Admission to graduate programs around the country is very competitive. To assure that BHS graduates will be competitive for the limited number of spaces in UK’s graduate program and other programs around the country, the University of Kentucky limits the number of undergraduate CSD majors.

“My decision to attend UK’s CSD undergraduate and graduate programs is

one I will never regret. In a field that allows for such a tremendous diversity

of career options-- with opportunities to work in the NICU or a nursing home--

this program equipped me to face each environment with a solid foundation of

knowledge. The small class size allowed me to eventually view my classmates

as co-workers and friends and the professors as accessible, invaluable resources. From the hands-on clinic

experiences and stimulating classroom environments to the challenging rotation

placements and opportunities for community involvement, this program

prepared me both academically and professionally to become an excellent

speech-language pathologist.”

Medical Laboratory Science

University of Kentucky / College of Health Sciences 7

Medical Laboratory Scientists are integral parts of the healthcare team. They use sophisticated instrumentation and technology to perform laboratory testing on blood and body fluids providing vital laboratory information that assists in patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as disease monitoring or prevention. For example, these test results may be used to detect cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, bacteria and viruses, as well as drug abuse.

The Medical Laboratory Science (formerly Clinical Laboratory Science) baccalaureate program at the University of Kentucky began in 1933 and was one of the first programs in the United States. The program has evolved over the years and has graduates worldwide who have worked in the field.

The 18-month program provides sequential instruction in laboratory medicine for the student who has been well prepared in science and mathematics during the first 2 years of study at the university.

Traditional students apply to the program in the second semester of the sophomore year and begin Medical Laboratory Science courses in the fall of the junior year. Students complete an intense curriculum that includes lectures and student laboratory classes, and then complete a 20-24 week clinical practicum in one of our affiliated clinical sites. Opportunities exist for the student who wishes to complete clinical practice at sites in rural Kentucky.

After completion of the MLS curriculum, students are well prepared for clinical practice in the modern, automated laboratory. Graduates are eligible to take national certification examinations as Medical Laboratory Scientists through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification.

The program is offered on both the Lexington campus of the University of Kentucky and at the Center for Excellence in Rural Health campus in Hazard, KY.

Physical therapy is about caring for people who are facing physical impairment. Through an established theoretical base and clinical care, a physical therapist’s goal is to restore a patient’s optimal physical function with support, knowledge and understanding.

The Physical Therapy (PT) program at UK has been educating physical therapists since 1967. The program is conducted at the Lexington, Kentucky campus and at the Center for Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) in Hazard, Kentucky. UK’s PT program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

The purpose of the Physical Therapy Program at the University of Kentucky is to meet the physical therapy needs of Kentucky and contribute to global needs overall by developing competent physical therapy practitioners who are analytical thinkers, educators and professionals. The Division of Physical Therapy strives to develop practitioners who are knowledgeable, ethical, independent, adaptable, reflective and service oriented. This practitioner development is accomplished through a wide variety of mechanisms:

1. Educational programs which are informed by scholarship and research and designed to provide excellence in instruction as well as accessibility to a diverse student body. These programs include the professional Doctorate of Physical Therapy (Lexington and CERH campuses), post-professional programs and continuing education courses. Students and faculty in this program are involved in the Rehabilitation Sciences Ph.D. program.

2. Scholarship, research, and creative activities that contribute to the discovery and expansion of knowledge in the health sciences.

3. Service to the public (in urban and rural communities), to other professional disciplines, and to the profession.

4. Professional socialization through participation in professional activities and organizations.

“ Entering the program as a physical therapist assistant, the PT program has allowed me to develop an even greater appreciation for the profession. The faculty and staff have provided me with the tools, support, and direction to become a successful physical therapy clinician. Being a student at the Center for Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard, KY has given me the opportunity to recognize the need for physical therapy services, particularly in the rural Kentucky setting. I believe the UK DPT program is very successful in developing outstanding, evidence based physical therapy practitioners designed to meet the growing needs of rural Kentucky, as well as the rest of the state and nation.”Heather McKnight
