Teaching Related Grants • PI, 2008-2009 Instructional Mini Grant from Lamar University ($2,000) for “Accessing Modern

Computational Tools for Process Control Curriculum Improvement”. Get students exposed to latest simulation and control technologies, research frontiers, and new software tools.

• Co-PI, NSF CCLI grant ($149,897) for “Improving Engineering Curricula by Integrating PBL Pedagogy with Modern Manufacturing Case Studies. Jointly develop new process control lab and new teaching materials for undergraduate control courses.

• Co-PI, received supports from Lyondell Chemical Co. ($65,000), Lamar University, and College of Engineering to “Establish Advanced Process Control lab”. Jointly developed a new teaching module and implemented it in the undergraduate control lab course.

• Co-PI, applied and received support from ExxonMobil ($25,000) for “Bridging The Process Control, Troubleshooting And Optimization Gaps Between Academia And Industry.” Introduced real project experience and knowledge into my class teaching.

Quality of teaching • Very knowledgeable in related subjects of teaching courses. • Respect every student and be fair to every student in grading their homework, project, and

exams. • Apply multiple educational grants to improve teaching proficiency and effectiveness. • Rigorous follow office hour, class time, and student appointment schedule. • Introduce many vivid multimedia course materials into class teaching to enhance students

understanding of control principles and phenomenon. • Conduct interactive teaching during the class. Always be patient to answer any questions from

every student at any time, in any way that the students prefer.

• Solve example problems through various software tools (Control Station, Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, Matlab, GAMS, MS Excel, and etc.) to enhance student understanding and problem solving capabilities.

• Employ and encourage students to use the online teaching tool of Blackboard System (previously, use WebCT) for every offered course in regular teaching activities. Teaching materials including syllabus, lecture notes, reading materials, homework assignments and solutions, project descriptions and requirements, and etc., are timely uploaded. The use of online teaching tools has facilitated the students study for their courses.

• Use real case studies from research projects to enhance students understanding and enlarge student vision.

• Encourage student participate related academic lectures and activities. • Assign challengeable projects to students and encourage their team work. • Attend educational conference to enrich educational knowledge and experience to improve my

teaching quality and effectiveness. • Supervise multiple graduate students on high-quality research, which is demonstrated by winning

various best paper awards and travel awards. Other Exceptions Related to Research and Teaching

To enhance my teaching and research proficiency and effectiveness, I have attended 38 short-course trainings on various subjects from AspenTech Inc., John Zink Institute, Invensys SimSci-Esscor Inc., Lamar University, Carnegie Mellon University, NSF Summer Institute, Safety and Chemical Engineering Education, Ansys Inc., ISA Southeast Texas, The Society of Petroleum Engineers, FieldBus Foundation, HART Communication Foundation. In total, I have earned 30.95 continuing education units (12.35 since Associate Professor). These trainings keep me updated with the frontier of industrial technology development and applications; and have enriched my academic knowledge and class teaching materials, which finally benefits my teaching and research.
