Join our Explorer Camp for an unforgettable summer of fun! Themes change weekly and include some educational components taught by endorsed teachers, as well as art, physical activities and field trips. Camps run Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cost is $229 for five-day attendance or $65 for daily attendance. The week of July 5 is $185 for four-day attendance (no class July 4).

Teen X-Treme camps offer older students all-day experiences featuring some of the hottest topics in town! Class schedule is from 9 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Early (7 to 9 a.m.), lunch (noon to 1 p.m.) and late (2:50 to 6 p.m.) supervision is included. Classes are held on campus in Glen Ellyn in the Student Resource Center (SRC). Teen X-Treme Descriptions3D Animation and Printing This course introduces students to the fundamentals of 3D character design and animation. Each student will learn the mechanics of Maya, an industry-grade 3D software environment, and produce a moving character of their own. In addition, this studio offers 3D scanning and printing technologies.

Art StudioExplore your imagination through a variety of art media. Designed to inspire creativity, this course allows students to explore a variety of ideas and media through the arts. No previous art training is needed.

Black Rocket — App Attack!Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized game development tool, students explore the world of phone-based and tablet applications. Student-created apps are accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Parents may choose to publish apps if certain criteria are met, and final decisions are the sole discretion of Apple or Google. No prior

experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class.

Crime Scene InvestigationPut your detective skills to work while learning how forensic scientists use DNA, fiber samples and other evidence to identify crime suspects. Some of the class sessions will be held in the Homeland Security Education Center, where students learn first-hand how crime scenes are investigated.

Digital Art and Animation Learn how to design a 3D programming environment using Alice software. Develop a virtual world and animate its people, animals and vehicles. Use the animations to tell a story or create an interactive game.

Robotic TechnologyProgram computers and use mathematics to model the movements of robotic devices. Students mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In small teams, using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors, students build robots that can walk, draw, move objects

or find their own way and avoid obstacles. Students use a control console or computer to teach their robots to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges.

Strategies for School SuccessLearn the skills that lead to success in school, such as test-taking, goal setting, time management, note-taking and organizational skills. Participants gain a better understanding of their learning style and how it applies to their academic success.

Web DesignUse your design, layout and creativity skills like a web design professional. Students will gain an in-depth, real-world experience in developing a comprehensive business website using design software.

Writing WorkshopLearn the elements of effective writing through journaling, writing exercises and literary analysis. This class will concentrate on grammar, punctuation, paragraphs, the development of ideas and sentence structure. Students will gain experience in writing essays, poetry and speeches.

COUNSELOR TRAINING PROGRAM — Ages 13-15College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Student Resource Center (SRC), Glen Ellyn

If you have outgrown day camp, but are too young to get a job, the Counselor Training (CT) program may be just for you! Counselors in training work closely with Summer Explorer day campers, and will have the opportunity to organize and lead age-appropriate activities while under the supervision of a camp aide. The program runs Monday to Thursday (two-week intervals) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Participants may bring a sack lunch or purchase a lunch in the cafeteria.

Our enrichment program features classes that improve academic and language skills, develop an appreciation for art and drama, and provide opportunities to explore technology. All classes meet Monday to Friday, except for the week of July 4, which meets Tuesday to Friday.

Parents are responsible for escorting students to and from all classes, unless the student is enrolled in both a morning and afternoon class and registered for supervision ($30 per week).

Classes are scheduled in Naperville and Glen Ellyn.

PLEASE NOTE: No student under the age of 16 can be left unescorted on the campus.

Enrichment Class DescriptionsAdventures in ReadingUsing fairy tales, fables and current popular literature, students will be enchanted with their reading while improving phonics, word analysis skills, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Algebra BasicsPrepare for or review algebra basics in this comprehensive course that improves your comprehension of algebraic symbols and terms, equations, signed numbers, polynomials, inequalities and factoring.

Amusement Park PhysicsExperiment with forces and Newton’s three laws of motion by building and testing model rollercoasters and an array of other amusement park rides. Hands-on activities introduce friction, velocity, forces and types of energy.

ArcheryLearn how to hold and successfully shoot a bow and arrow. Safety and attention to spatial relationships are stressed. All equipment is provided, but you may bring your own bow if you prefer. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions.

Art StartDevelop an artistic eye for color, shape, texture and form. Work with materials including chalk, paint, fabric and clay as you explore different media and techniques to express your creativity.

Authors’ WorkshopEngaging activities include a review of popular young adult books and poems that will inspire young writers to express their own creative ideas in stories and poems. Students will practice grammar, sentence structure and paragraph skills.

Candy ChefBecome a candy making expert as you learn simple recipes and techniques to make the tastiest of treats. Students will make scrumptious chocolates, caramels, and other chewy, gooey delights.

CeramicsStudents are introduced to materials, techniques and concepts in ceramics while working in a college ceramics lab. Students learn hand building, wheel throwing, glazing and firing.

CheMYSTERYExperiment with hands-on chemical reactions to explore the fascinating world of elements.

Competitive MathStretch your math abilities by using logic, analytical reasoning and mental math. Learn to quickly solve a variety of algebraic and geometric math problems through math competition.

Creating Cool WebsitesUse your design, layout and creativity skills like a web design professional. You will gain an in-depth, real world experience in developing a comprehensive business website using design software.

Creative Engineering How is a tower built? What makes a bridge strong? Turn on your creativity and think like an engineer. Engage in a variety of hands-on activities that challenge you to solve practical problems using experimentation, analysis and personal designs.

Creative WritingDiscover the joy of writing, the intrigue of language and the confidence of authorship. Students will learn to write stories and personal narratives among other creative forms.

Duct Tape ArtThis is your chance to explore the many uses for duct tape and how you can use it to design your own artwork. Learn to make items like flowers, bags, and wallets, as well as 3D sculptures and 2D collages.

Expository WritingThis form of writing is used primarily for research papers and essay exams. Explore the various types of expository writing and learn how to organize writing around a thesis or idea.

Famous ConspiraciesLearn about popular myths regarding the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations, the moon landing, Pearl Harbor and more.

EligibilityThe Talent Search program is offered in conjunction with the Illinois Regional Office of Education, DuPage County. Students who have tested in the 95th percentile or higher on an appropriate achievement test (MAT, ACT, SAT, Iowa, EXPLORE, etc.) are eligible to apply. Students who believe they are qualified but who do not have an appropriate test score may petition for enrollment by calling the Talent Search office (630) 942-2208.

Honors Class DescriptionsHonors Algebra IThis course offers the equivalent of two semesters of high school honors Algebra I, from algebraic expressions through quadratic equations and functions.

Honors Algebra II with TrigonometryThis course offers the equivalent of two semesters of high school honors Intermediate Algebra, from linear equations and inequalities through trigonometric functions. Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry

Honors American LiteratureThe course includes the study of the development of American literature. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical and analytical thinking skills through classroom discussion and compositions.

Honors GeometryThis course offers the equivalent of two semesters of high school honors Geometry (plane and coordinate). Proofs, triangle congruence, similarity, parallelism, circles and coordinates are among the topics covered.

Honors Pre-AlgebraFor Talent Search students entering grades 5 to 7, this course is the equivalent of the last three quarters of middle school pre-algebra and covers arithmetic operations through an introduction to algebraic concepts.

Honors Pre-CalculusThis course offers the equivalent of two semesters of high school honors pre-calculus, from algebraic relations through mathematical induction. Topics also include linear,

quadratic, exponential, rational, and logarithmic functions, graphing, conics and trigonometry.

Honors Writing WorkshopThis course offers opportunities for students to explore different writing genres: narrative, descriptive, creative, persuasive and expository modes of discourse. The students will study different writers and their writing styles. Students will have opportunities to improve writing proficiency through a complete study of the components of solid writing: fluency, style, diction, mechanics, grammar, imaginative expressions and details.

TALENT SEARCHHONORS CLASSESHomework is assigned and grades are given in these courses. Students are expected to spend at least 50 percent independent study hours outside of class reading their text and preparing for class. Class time is spent on application and problem solving. The Honors Math, Biology, Writing Workshop and American Literature classes run Monday to Friday.

Please note: Talent Search honors classes are not eligible for high school credit. For high school credit classes, see your school guidance counselor.

After researching newspapers and other sources, improve your critical thinking and public speaking skills by debating controversial and newsworthy topics in a lively team format with expert guidance.

Persuasive WritingLearn how to organize your ideas, support your opinions with facts and write strong conclusions to get your point across. Students will explore persuasive writing techniques and read examples of effective writing to improve their skills.

Pre-algebra PreviewStudents build arithmetic skills as they apply to algebra. Explore pre-algebra properties of rational numbers,algebraic equations, geometric figures, ratio, proportion, percent, exponents/radicals, probability and statistics.

Public SpeakingBecome a poised and confident speaker as you practice writing and presenting several types of speeches. Speech team basics and impromptu speaking are also covered.

Puzzles and Problem SolvingStudents will participate in activities that will help them develop and enhance their problem solving abilities. They will learn to analyze and solve non-routine mathematical problems, identify key words, and use diagrams and tables. They will also identify patterns and develop estimation and deductive reasoning skills.

Robotic TechnologyProgram computers and use mathematics to model the movements of robotic devices. Use robotics kits to learn to control computerized systems.

Science Fiction WritingLet your imagination go wild. Science fiction writing is the “literature of ideas.” Develop plot, character, setting, theme and writing skills in the genre of science fiction.

SketchUp ProgrammingLearn the basics of 3D modelling with SketchUp. Students will have the opportunity to design buildings or other objects.

Statistics/ProbabilityStatistics and probabilities give us information about the world around us and the likelihood that something is going to happen. Come to this exciting class to learn how to analyze and interpret the numbers. Bring T1-84 graphing calculator to class.

Structural EngineeringExperiment with the tools used by structural engineers in designing buildings, dams, bridges and more. Learn what it takes to create safe structures through hands-on activities and computer simulations.

Study StrategiesStrengthening your mastery of a topic may not require more time studying—it might require studying more efficiently. This course will offer an assortment of useful strategies that will demonstrate how to better manage study time, improve concentration and remember more. Note-taking techniques, test-taking skills, memory tricks, and presenting effective oral and written reports will be some of the topics covered.

Video Game DesignUse game development tools like GameMaker to learn basic game design elements from game flow and sprite creation to backgrounds and sound all wrapped into basic programming exercises.

Writing EffectivelyPolish your skills as an author, poet and essayist. Explore new ways to animate ideas with attention-getting devices and imaginative language. Learn the proper structure for school essays and how to apply techniques used by

experienced writers, as you craft and edit short stories, articles and poems in styles uniquely yours.

Young EinsteinsBe amazed and amused as you investigate how things work and why things happen. The principles of basic physics are explored through hands-on experiments in this mind-bending course.

Black Rocket Class DescriptionsApp Attack!Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized game development tool, students explore the world of phone-based and tablet applications. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, also see firsthand how the world of App’s publishing functions. Student-created apps are accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class.

Code BreakersCalling all future coders, programmers and designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML5 through

a series of web projects and design challenges each day, and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Student projects are available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Make Your Own Video Game Unlock the keys to game design by choosing your own adventure! Unlike with any other Black Rocket game design course, students in this program make special top-down adventure games like Pokémon or Zelda to compete with their friends. Design unlimited rooms and levels as you continue your quest in becoming a game design master. Student-created games are available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Minecraft ModdersUse your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding is also taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects are available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students work in teams for most of the program.

You may also register by writing to the Continuing Education office at [email protected]. Parents/students will need to use the registration form at the back of this catalog to register for classes when mailing or faxing. Complete all the information requested on the form.

The Louise M. Beem Early Childhood Center (ECC) offers full-time classes for toddlers through kindergarten, and part-time classes for 3- and 4-year-old preschoolers.

Our program emphasizes the value of play in the development of young children. Teachers who are degreed in Early Childhood Education plan meaningful classroom activities that engage children’s curiosity.

Located on campus in Glen Ellyn, the Center is licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
