Highlights
Career Services surveyed Penn undergraduates to gather information about their experiences over the summer. In the
Fall of 2009, career counselors distributed paper surveys at On-Campus Recruiting orientations and Career Services
workshops and emailed students and academic departments an online version of the survey.
A total of 828 College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) students participated in the survey, which is an 8% increase from last
year’s response rate. Out of the estimated 1,600 students in the Class of 2010, 352 responded to the survey, which is a
4% decrease from last year’s rising seniors.
Primary Activities in the summer of CAS students who responded to the survey: (Note: 47% of CAS respondents also reported a secondary activity)
Salary: The average weekly salary for rising seniors was $636.
Industries: The industries which had the most CAS interns are education (including higher education), financial services, and nonprofit.
Employers: More Penn students found summer positions at University of Pennsylvania (128), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (9), JPMorgan (7), Citi (6), UBS (6), and Ivy Insiders (5) than at any other employers.
International: Of students with U.S. citizenship, 50 reported working abroad over the summer. Of 94 international students who responded to the survey, 40 worked in the U.S. over the summer. In sum, a total of 89 students worked abroad last summer, which represent 12% of the survey respondents who worked (paid and unpaid).
Public Service: 56% of CAS students were employed in the education, nonprofit, healthcare, and government sectors, an increase from 42% the summer before. 10% of CAS students worked in the government industry.
Search Method: 29% of all CAS survey respondents found their positions through Career Services leads, including on-campus recruiting, an increase from 23% the summer before. 30% found their summer positions through personal contacts. Of rising seniors, 38% used Career Services to find their summer positions.
Search Timing: For rising juniors and seniors, most summer job offers came in April. For rising sophomores, most offers came in May. Overall, 26% of students secured a summer job offer by February.
