Cover: CBC Students experiencing the Philippines Immersion.
International ImmersionAs always, there was much activity
associated with our College during the
recent term break. In addition to our
Year 12 students being engaged in their
exams, another group of staff and students
undertook an important excursion which
supports a critical programme at CBC
Fremantle.
Ten students were accompanied by
Mr Craig Jones and Ms Maria Garbin
to work with Edmund Rice Services in
Maasin City in the Philippines. In addition
to learning much about the community
they visited, the participants also acquired
greater knowledge of themselves.
One of the features of this immersion is
that the students were able to work with
the local people in settings which were
often very unfamiliar to our boys.
In addition to assisting with health
checks in primary schools, tree planting
and environmental programmes, the
boys also had the opportunity to engage
in some cultural exchange with students
their own age in two high schools. This
diversity of experience ensured that the
immersion was authentic and challenging.
As a College which professes a special
concern for the marginalised and
disadvantaged in our world, it is important
that our students have practical experience
in activity which seeks to relieve poverty,
From the Principal

promote human rights and support
local development.
An education in justice and equity and
the provision of diverse experiences are
two characteristics which are strongly
associated with CBC Fremantle. Despite
returning exhausted, our young men
received many accolades for their
conduct and participation on this tour
and I commend them for their willingness
to accept the challenges inherent in it.
An exciting development for the College
is an immersion to an Edmund Rice school
community in Lima, Peru during April next
year. This immersion is being overseen by
Mr Adrian Correia and will be attended by
an enthusiastic group of former students.
It is envisaged that this amazing
opportunity for cross-cultural learning
will be made available to students of the
College from 2018.
College EventsTwo important celebrations for our
community will be conducted at St Patrick’s
Basilica and in the Bob Rosé Meyer
Gymnasium at the end of next week.
The first is the annual Graduation Mass
and Ceremony which commences at
St Pat’s at 5.30pm on Friday 21 October.
This is obviously a very important occasion
for each of our Year 12 students and their
families and is a celebration of the many
achievements for which the Class of 2016
may be justifiably proud.
The second event is our annual Awards
Night on Sunday 23 October in the
gym. CBC is blessed by the calibre of its
students and it is important that we have
a culture of celebrating their success.
Congratulations to all of the boys who
have worked diligently throughout the
year and embraced the challenges offered
at the school.
Mr Shaun Kenny
Principal
Henry Scurry with the locals in the Philippines
“An education in justice and equity and the provision of diverse experiences are two characteristics which are strongly associated with CBC Fremantle.”

Black Dog on a Lead
On Sunday 16 October join the Black Dog on a Lead walk, raising money for Headspace while getting people to talk openly about
depression or ‘the black dog’ within our community.
Almost half (45.5%) of the total population experience a mental health disorder at some point in their life and although you may be one
of the lucky ones, there is a good chance that someone you LOVE, is or will be effected.
In Australia, eight lives are lost every day as a result of suicide and it is the number one cause of deaths for Australians aged 15 to 44.
Indigenous communities are up to eight times more likely to take their own life than non-Indigenous Australians and we currently have
the highest rate of suicide in the world for young Indigenous males.
We are ALL in this together and no one should have to suffer in silence.
To register for the walk click the link www.mycause.com.au/events/blackdogonalead.
Alternately if you’d like to avoid the walking bit and still support Headspace you can donate by sponsoring Mrs Petrina Brewer
at the following link: www.mycause.com.au/page/134220/black-dog-on-a-lead-petrina-richmond.
