Important Information

Student Course

Selection for 2021

Years 9 - 12 From today (Friday 31 July) students will begin getting access to online course selection for 2021. Over the next week or so all students in year 9 - 12 will be shown how to select their courses for next year in an assembly, after which they will be given access to enable them to make selections. As a parent/caregiver you have a vital role to play in helping your child(ren) make informed decisions that keep their possible career pathways open while also keeping them engaged and interested in their learning.

There is an opportunity to discuss possible subjects/Courses with Heads of Faculty (HoF), Teachers in Charge (TiC), Deans and our Careers Advisor Brenda Helliwell on

Monday 10th August from 4.30 to 5.30pm in the Garin School Library. Subject Selection will initially close on Monday 17 August at 9.00 am. Selection and application for courses will again take place online, accessed through the KAMAR Portal. The Course Selection component of the KAMAR portal shows you how to select subjects as well as gives you subject descriptions and related information about each course by using the menu on the left hand side under Useful information and Courses. I hope you enjoy this opportunity to sit down with your child(ren) to help shape and plan their future pathway. Paul Bucknall, Timetabler

This Sunday is the 13th Sunday in Ord

“Faith Facts" week 2- Term 3

This Sunday is the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time: “Many people are fed”.

Isaiah 55:1-3, Psalm 144, Romans 8:35, 37-39, Matthew 14:13-21 In today’s reading, Jesus is able to share a small quantity of food with thousands of people because of the power of God. It is this same power that allows him to share himself with us through the Eucharist - the priest blesses the bread and wine just as Jesus blessed the food at this time. How do you think the disciples felt as they saw this miracle taking place in front of them? Even though they had seen many miracles they didn’t cease to be amazed by the power of Jesus, proving once again that he was truly God’s Son.

Snippets from Year 11 assignments: Catholic Ethical Principles as they apply to the issue of Racism. On the 3rd of June, 2020, Pope Francis publicly spoke out on racism, the Black Lives Matter protests around the world, and the killing of George Floyd. He stated that “We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life”. Pope Francis is speaking out against the acts of racism and the exclusions of innocent peoples. He points out the irony of claiming to live out the values a Christian should uphold, yet not doing anything in defense of the lives of people that are subject to racism. As an extremely respected and influential man, Pope Francis is acting on racism by leading the Catholic Church and its followers into the direction they talk about whenever quoting the Catholic Ethical Principles; consequentially ‘walking the talk’.

From the Sports Desk … Sport, as with other co-curricular activities at Garin College, provides an opportunity for staff, students and community alike to live the Garin values. Generosity is a fine example of this, with our entire sports programme being delivered by a team of volunteer coaches and managers. These people willingly give their time and expertise to invest in the development of our students in and through sport. They exemplify generosity and we value each and every one of them for the massive contribution they make to our school. This week one of our volunteers, Ms O'Brien - Teacher in Charge of Netball, won the coveted Cadbury Netball New Zealand Volunteer of the Month Award from Netball New Zealand. This awesome achievement recognises Ms O'Brien's outstanding contribution to all facets of netball at Garin. We congratulate Ms O'Brien on this richly deserved recognition. Well done!

Another example of the Garin spirit of generosity is evident in the Garin College and Nelson Netball Shoe Swap. The shoe swap, which started at the beginning of the netball season, promotes recycling and has enabled college students to acquire or upgrade their netball shoes at no cost. We commend Ms Rankin and the Garin Senior A netball team for this initiative, and thank the team for their generosity in running the shoe swap table each Saturday from 9am - 1pm. Nice work!

Best wishes to players, coaches, managers and supporters for the games this weekend and during the week ahead.

Kia ora koutou This week I have been in Year 12 classes educating them about careers, the importance of Year 12 in terms of academic achievement and NZQA university entrance requirements and having some great discussions about the eight options they can go on to when they leave school - University, Polytechnic, Apprenticeship, Wananga, Private Training Provider, Work, GAP Year, NZ Defence Force. We have many universities returning to Garin College this term for course planning sessions now that our Year 13s have finalised their plans for next year. These visits are also for any seniors wishing to learn about what the universities have to offer their future students. I have emailed all Year 11-13 students and parents with visit dates of a range of study providers for the calendar. I am regularly sharing career ideas with our students and letting them know of future opportunities available to them via emails to their school email addresses. Most of these opportunities are targeted at Year 11-13 students. I encourage you to ask your student to share these emails with you and discuss their interest and suitability. Upcoming event: New Zealand Defence Force Information Evening - open to all

Applications are now open for: Hands-On Otago - summer holiday event for Year 12/13 2021. Please email me asap if your teen is interested in applying for this programme.

NEW BUS ROUTE (Public Service) I’m getting in touch to share some information about the new Richmond Bus Service which starts from Monday 3 August and may be of interest to your school community as it passes right by you. The route map and times are in the flier available from the school office, along with some other information. It's a loop service that starts and finishes in Queen Street to make it easy to visit shops and services in Richmond and to connect to the Nelson and Stoke bus routes. The route travels to Hill Street and Champion Road in the east and to Lower Queen Street and Three Brothers Corner in the west. It’s a “Hail and Ride” route so there are only a few formal stops but you can wave down the bus anywhere along the route where it is safe and legal for the bus to stop. Just make sure the driver can see you. The introduction of this service coincides with the arrival of Bee Card in our region. It’s a new electronic card that makes travel by bus easier and smarter. Please give us a call on 543 8400 if you have any questions about the service or the new Bee Card.

WELLBEING CORNER Kia ora Garin Whānau

Wellbeing is a huge focus for us here at Garin College. Many of you would have noticed the posters we have around the school, including the Five Ways to Wellbeing posters. The Five Ways to Wellbeing is an initiative from the Mental Health Foundation, and it reminds us of ways we can look after ourselves, and take care of our wellbeing. You can read more here: https://www.allright.org.nz/articles/five-ways-to-wellbeing.

The focus this week from the Five Ways to Wellbeing is connectedness.

Connectedness is important all through life, but particularly in adolescence. Finding ways to connect both on and offline is really important for wellbeing and staying happy. We as humans are naturally pack animals, so it is actually a survival instinct to find our place with those around us. This means that being unable to, or finding it hard to do so, can cause as real emotional distress. This can sometimes look like loneliness. Loneliness can be really hard to deal with, but is also really common. Here is a website for anyone who is feeling a little lonely - https://letsendloneliness.co.nz/ And remember "He waka eke noa" - we are all in this together. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people! Ngā Mihi, Kate the Counsellor
