Making a list— and checking it twiceWhat better place for lists than

sports. What is a lineupor adepth chart if not a list? Polls

and rankings and standings. Some-one is always climbing an all-timelist for yards or tackles or touch-downs.Drafts are lists, often in thewrongorder. Rosters are theultimate list—organizedby class orposition or number or last name.

For our annual college footballpreview, the one that’s in your handsor onyour screen, wewanted toexplore the idea of lists— to-do lists, rankings, goals, rules. Youname it.

Turns out coachChris Petersenand theBoise State football coachesare big fans of lists aswell.

“It’s the structure,” Petersen said.College football’s very essence is

built around lists. They are releasedeachSunday, compiled by sportswriters and coaches and computersaround thenation.

Asmuch aswehate polls—whycan’t they just settle it on the field?— they give the sport its backbone.

Its starting point. Its debate parameters. Now, finally, it’s time to scramble

those lists. To find thenextRobertGriffin III,who comes fromnowhere to the topof everyone’sHeisman list. To find the team tobreak the SoutheasternConference’sstring of six consecutiveBCS titles, ifpossible.

Here’smy list for the fall, amixof

to-dos,must-sees and things to avoid:ÆTodo: East Lansing at night.

Boise State ventures intoBigTenterritory for another prime-timeseasonopener.Will thegameanswerlingeringquestions about theBron-cosor exposemoreweaknesses?

ÆMust see: Exiled coaches returnand thePac-12 getsmore interesting.RichRodriguez andMikeLeach, twoof the game’smost creative offensiveminds, are back atArizona andWashingtonState, respectively.Hope thePac-12 invested someof itsTVmoney in scoreboard light bulbs.

ÆToavoid:Another year of BCSnonsense.Yes, a playoff is coming. But not soon enough. We’ve still gottwoyears of BCSblather.

ÆTodo:Albuquerque. It’s theonlycityonBoiseState’s schedule that Ihaven’t been to.There’s got tobesomegreatMexican food there, right?

ÆMust see: ESPN’sCollege

GameDay. It should be evenbetterwith ScottVanPelt.

ÆTo avoid: Another seasonofhearing howgreat the SEC is. Theleague is fantastic, no doubt. Its fansare themost passionate in collegefootball. Its teams are great and itscoaches are awesome.Weget it.

ÆMust see:Watching a newquarterback start for Boise State. No long-termcontracts in collegefootballmeans someonenew isalways getting a chance.

ÆToavoid:Watching a newquarterback start for Boise State.AfterKellenMoore’s excellence, watching theBroncos play offensewon’t be quite the same.

ÆTodo: Stay out of trouble. I’mtalking to youPennState,Ohio State,NorthCarolina,HoneyBadger,IsaiahCrowell and everyone else.

invaluable.

PROTECT THE FOOTBALLBoise State hasn’t had aQB throw more than
