CDRMISSIONTheCollegeDiversityRoundtable(CDR)isstructuredasastudent-centeredtaskforcewherecampusclimateandqualityoflifeissuesand/orconcernscanbevoiced,heard,andactedupon,especiallythoseaffectingracial,ethnicandculturalgroupsoncampus.TheCDRisalsoafocalpointfordiversitydiscussions,initiativesandbestpractices.
CURRENTBIAS-RELATEDINCIDENTDISCUSSIONIncident#1–BusRiderEtiquetteSignsRepresentativesfromtheURCSAE-BoardwereinvitedtojoinmembersoftheCDRtoparticipateinadiscussionregardingarecentBias-RelatedIncidentwheresignswerepostedonbusshuttlesaskingriderstoadheretoa“BusRiderEtiquette.”ThesesignswerepoorlywritteninEnglishandonlytranslatedintoChinese.Theimpactofthesesignsledtoover60UofRcommunitymemberstofilloutBias-RelatedIncidentReports,alertingtheBias-RelatedIncidentExecutiveTeamtotheincident.ACTIONITEM:DeanRunnerandDeanBurnsbothmentionedthattheywouldworktogethertohaveastatementsentouttoourcommunityregardingtheincident.UPDATE:OnSeptember23,thefollowingemailwassenttotheundergraduateandgraduatestudentswithintheCollege:

DearStudentsoftheAS&ECommunity:IthasbeenbroughttoourattentionthatthispastThursday,noticesentitled“BusRiderEtiquette”werepostedonsomeUniversityshuttlebuses.OneversionoftheposterwasinEnglish,andtheotherinChinese.Whilethesenoticeswereofficiallooking,theywerenotofficialuniversitystatementsandtheyshouldnothavebeenpostedatall.ThefactthattheyweretranslatedintoChinese,andnootherlanguage,sendsanoffensiveandunacceptablemessage.Wewouldliketoapologizetoanyonewhomthesemessagesharmed,especiallymembersofourChineseandChineseAmericancommunities,whowereunderstandablyupsetandangeredbythem.Thisincidentdoesnotreflectwhatweseektoconveyasaninstitutionandembodyasacommunity.Pleaseunderstandthatwearedoingeverythingwecantoinvestigatethisincident.Whilewestilldonotknowwhowasresponsibleforpostingthefliers,theinvestigationintothismatterisongoingandserious.TheDepartmentofPublicSafetyhasalreadyinterviewedmanyofthoseclosesttotheoperationoftheseshuttles,andwillcontinuetheinvestigationuntilallsourcesofpossibleinformationareexhausted.Ifyouhaveanyinformationthatmaybehelpfultotheinvestigation(eveninformationthatmaynotseemsignificant),weurgeyoutocontacttheDepartmentofPublicSafetyat(585)275-3333.Wetakeveryseriouslyourandothers’responsibilityasinstitutionalleaderstoinvestigatethismatterinordertofindoutwhen,how,andwhythisoccurred,andwhoisresponsible,andtoholdhimorheraccountable.OurUniversityvaluesincludesidealssuchas“equity,integrity,respect,”andofcourse,Meliora.Inthecomingdays,wehopetodiscoverhowandwhythisincidentoccurred,tolearnandtohealtogether,andtocreateanever-bettercommunity.Sincerely,MattBurns–DeanofStudentsBethOlivares–DeanforDiversityJeffRunner–DeanoftheCollegeMelissaSturge-Apple–DeanofGraduateStudiesIncident#2–SwastikasfoundonRiverCampusandEastmanSchoolofMusicCDRMemberswerealsoalertedtoanotherBias-RelatedIncidentthatinvolvedSwastikasbeingfoundintheSusanB.AnthonyResidentialHallandontheEastmanSchoolofMusiccampus.BothincidentswerealertedtotheBias-RelatedIncidentExecutiveTeam.PublicSafetywasdispatchedtodocumentandinvestigateandfacilitiesweresenttoremovethegraffiti.UPDATE:MatthewBurns,DeanofStudentssentanemailonSeptember13toresidentslivinginSusanB.AnthonyHallandGeneseeHallregardingtheincident.UPDATE:SummerNaugle,AssistantDirectorforResidentialLifesentanemailonSeptember17toEastmanSchoolofMusicresidentsregardingtheincident.

Monday, September 17, 2018 Subject: Bias Related Vandalism StudentLivingCenterCommunity, Overtheweekend,therewasabias-relatedvandalismeventintheSLCGameRoom.Twoswastikasweredrawnontheceilingbyanunknownperson.ThiskindofbehaviorisunacceptableinourCommunity,andwearetakingactiontoholdtheresponsiblepartyaccountable.ThereisasecuritycameraintheSLCGameRoom.PublicSafetyisreviewingthesecurityfootageandconductingtheinvestigation,anysuspectsfoundwillbereferredtotheStudentConductProcess.Ifyouhaveanyinformation,pleasecontactPublicSafetyat585-275-3333.Duetotheongoinginvestigationandnecessarycleaning,theGameRoomwillbeclosedthroughWednesday9/19.ItwillreopenonThursday,9/20after5:00pm.
