Minutes – February 7, 2018 in MUB 140
1:30 Call to Order
Changes to Informational Agenda:
Removed: ADMJ/F SC requested pulling F SC 107B Fire Training Work Experience from the informational agenda in order to modify the prerequisite.
Added: ENGN Modify Credit Program Sustainability, CAcc (this should have been on the Jan. 24 informational agenda, but a setting in CurricUNET moved it forward automatically, error found on Feb. 7, 2018)
Announcements: The Social Justice Studies: Women’s Studies AAT degree, passed last year by the Curriculum Committee, has been retitled Social Justice Studies: Gender Studies. The State is limiting the types and names of the Social Justice Studies Associates Degrees for Transfer, so this title is required.
Laura Walsh has scheduled drop-in hours for help with requisites, in TLC. The full support calendar is here: http://www.ccsf.edu/en/employee-services/office-of-instruction/curricunet/help_lab.html
Minutes of January 24, 2018 approved with one correction.

Attachment 1
Proposal: That the Curriculum Committee recommend that CCSF replace the label “Advisory” with
“Recommended Preparation” in describing this type of requisite. (2nd reading)
Answers to questions from first reading: there is no limit to the length of the label in the Schedule. It is
not clear whether the programming work can be done to make this change in time for the 2018-19
catalog.
Recommendation in resolution form for Academic Senate:
Whereas, reports from faculty indicate that the term advisory is not clear to many students, some of whom believe advisories are required preparation, needing proof of completion of the advisory course, and Whereas, some other California Community Colleges use "recommended preparation" in place of "advisory" to describe this form of requisite, Be it resolved that the Academic Senate recommend changing the label "Advisory" to "Recommended Preparation" in Course Outlines of Record, the College Catalog, the Course Schedule, and other CCSF materials as needed, effective beginning the 2018-19 academic year.

Re: Rationale for Not Including an English and/or ESL Advisory with Anth 25
The work assigned in this class does not require well- developed writing/English skills.
In the current course there are several out-of-class written assignments approximately 1 page in length.
These assignments are “reaction papers” designed to encourage students to reflect on the course
material and stimulate class discussion. Part of the grade for these papers includes in-class activities in
which students discuss and analyze the issues addressed in their papers. In short, the papers are a
starting point so that students can clarify and refine their thoughts further in small group discussion. An
example of one of the assignment questions is: Do you think that there is a gender division of labor in
the US today? Why or why not? What has the division of labor been like in your own life or experience?
There are three essay tests in the currently taught version of this course (two mid-terms plus a final
exam). These tests are open book exams completed in class. Students are provided ahead of time with a
study guide so they know what to expect, and the study guide questions are discussed in class before
the exam. The questions are focused and limited in scope and can be answered in approximately one
blue book page. An example of one of the test questions is: In anthropology, how is the term “status”
defined? Using this definition, choose one culture covered in lecture, videos, or assigned reading and
describe the status of women in that culture.
When needed I refer students who are having problems in the course to appropriate campus resources
(e.g., tutoring) covered in the last section of this document.
Also, the course outline includes options for multiple choice exams and other types of non-written work.

Argos data do not support the need for an English and/or ESL advisory.
There are five semesters of Argos data for Anth 25. Over those five semesters there are data for only
four ESL students (approximately 1 per semester). Of those four students three (75%) finished the
course successfully.
The overall successful completion rate for Anth 25 over the five semesters was approximately 70%
(69.8%). Of the 125 total students who completed the course during that time 25 (only 20%) were at the
English 96, 93, or 92 level. At the English 96 level 64% (63.6) finished successfully, at the 93 level 50%
finished successfully, and at the 92 level 50% finished successfully. The completion rates for the English
96, 93, and 92 students are will within the “2:1 ratio” between overall completion rate and other
completion rates used by the Curriculum Committee in assessing Argos data.
In summary, few ESL and less than transfer level English students are enrolled in the Anthropology 25
class. And, for those who are enrolled, success rates are fine.
Anthropology 25 attracts students who may be discouraged or intimidated by an English advisory
A significant number of students in Anth 25 are female students who are older than the average CCSF
student. They are often returning to college after a long time away from school, and they tend to take
the Anth 25 course because they think it’s an interesting way to restart a college career and because
they think it has relevance to their own lives. These students are often anxious and a bit worried about
starting or restarting college, and they often lack confidence in their scholastic abilities. They are easily
discouraged by suggestions that a class is going to be “hard” or that they are not prepared for college
work. Losing these students would be a blow to the diversity and breadth of perspectives that the class
tries to encourage.
The Behavioral Sciences Department has an established track record of addressing issues of student
achievement and improving student achievement.
All faculty have access to Argos data, there are ongoing discussions of achievement gaps and
presentations of “High Impact Practices” (shown to improve student success) at department meetings
and in other contexts. All hiring committees include questions on student success practices,
underprepared students, and achievement gaps. All new faculty participate in a 2 hour orientation that
focuses on High Impact pedagogy and addresses the needs of underprepared and at –risk students.
The department received funding for a program aimed at increasing achievement through addressing
psychological barriers to success; after six semesters there has been a large reduction in the
achievement gap, and English and ESL skills have not been shown to be salient to the success of those
participating in the project. The department also received funding to bring an Achievement Gap
specialist to the department to work with faculty. There is a “Lunch and Learn” series in which student
services/counseling personnel are invited to inform faculty about services available to students and
where to make appropriate student referrals.
The department has embedded tutors in ten sections this semester and is planning to expand this effort.
There is an Anthropology tutor in the LAC who provides free tutoring to students in all of the
Anthropology classes. Also, the Anthropology program has increased its instructional pool by 150%. One
new instructor is a long time tenured faculty member at another community college; this instructor has
headed programs for underprepared students. Two other new instructors are currently teaching writing
classes at other institutions and bring that experience to their courses; one of them teaches ESL.
