Derwent firsts will be favourites to win Group One, with Went-worth firsts their main competi-tion. After narrowly missing out in the final last year they will look to go one better this time around and have a favourable draw. They are solid in defence with University firsts players, Tom Brandreth and Ollie Har-rison, while going forwards they will rely on Dan Atherton to score the majority of their goals.

KEY PLAYER: Dan Atherton

After last year’s failure to reach the quarter finals, James firsts will be looking to bounce back and justify their pre-tournament hype. They stand a better chance this year with Richard Baxter as captain. I expect them to com-fortably defeat Alcuin firsts and the rest of the teams in Group Two. Their squad is full of talent with Tom Clarke and James Offord being gifted chances by James Davies.

KEY PLAYER: James Davies

The champions from last year go into the tournament as favour-ites despite their inconsistent form this year. The ‘Fax have arguably the best University goalkeeper in Jonny Sim, while in midfield any four of six play-ers could start with captain Jack Beadle and Dan Jones occupy-ing the wings. An area they may not be as strong as last year is in attack but Tom Day will be a threat.

KEY PLAYER: Jonny SimJames seconds stand a good chance of qualifying from Group Three, although they will face stiff competition. Freddie Ferrao and Ben Cooke will be the men who need to perform if they are to qualify.

KEY PLAYER: Feddie Ferrao

Derwent seconds have a chal-lenging group to qualify from but definitely have the quality in their squad to progress. Jon Gar-ness, who scored six goals last year as his team finished third in their group will be key.

KEY PLAYER: Jon Garness

The men in black and yellow will be the resolute underdogs as always, a tag they will try to shake off as the competition gets underway. With a full squad finally available at captain Andy Hutt’s disposal they will fancy their chances of getting out of the group with the pace of Bruce Starkey on the wing likely to cause problems for the weaker defences, though goalscoring has been a problem for them.

KEY PLAYER: Bruce Starkey

Vanbrugh will be delighted with their draw as their main chal-lengers will be Langwith firsts and Halifax seconds. Vanbrugh surprised many this year with impressive new talent coming into the college with Elliot Rous-Ross proving prolific in front of goal. They also welcome back the best defender from the College Cup last year, Ziggy Heath, while Phil Taylor and Ben Stanier will cause havoc against opponents.

KEY PLAYER: Phil Taylor

Goodricke firsts have seen themselves drawn in this year’s group of death, and they could easily finish fourth. The inclu-sion of Stu Dunk, the University seconds captain will bolster their defence, while Jon Sharpe will be the main attacking influence with James Gutteridge and Sam Lewis providing able support. If Goodricke firsts do play to their potential, they will qualify for the quarter finals.

KEY PLAYER: Stu Dunk

The winners of the 2009 and 2010 College Cup will be cau-tiously optimistic about their chances this year after improv-ing throughout the winter and spring leagues. The Group Two draw sees Vanbrugh seconds as their main competition for a quarter final place, with James firsts expected to win the group. The creativity of Will Taylor will be heavily relied on, while Alex Brown is the main goal threat.

KEY PLAYER: Will Taylor

The post-graduate college will be happy with the Group One draw they received as aside from Derwent they are favourites to qualify for the cup competition. They will miss Samik Datta who is not in their squad but they still have plenty of creativity and goal-scoring ability with the likes of Dom Green and Andrea Marcheggiano providing a real threat. Their problems will likely be in defence.

KEY PLAYER: Dom Green

Halifax seconds have a good chance of making the quarter finals. Hamish Denham will look to replicate his College Cup form of 12 months ago with Dave Lewis, Craig Dean and Connor Meckin providing creativity from midfield.
