Kim brought workgroup questions/concerns to the consultant which resulted in the following final goals and objectives: The original objectives of this research are: 1. To begin the process of a comprehensive brand assessment; 2. To understand stakeholder and community awareness and perceptions of Lord Fairfax, the namesake of the individual; 3. To assess any geographical confusion created by proximity to Fairfax County; and 4. To uncover and understand stakeholder and/or community support or resistance to inform leadership’s decision making about a name change. Additional objectives (added since communications with Lord Fairfax leadership): 1. Complete a comprehensive brand assessment; 2. Explore advantages and drawbacks to a potential rebrand; and, 3.     InSeptemberof1994,theFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsidentifieda47acretrackofland,locatedjustsouthofWarrenton,Virginia,alongRoutes15,17and29,foruseindevelopingtheFauquierCampusofLordFairfaxCommunityCollege.ThepropertytobeconveyedtotheCommonwealthofVirginia,StateBoardforCommunityCollegesisvaluedat$553,200.InMarchof1995,anarchitectural/engineeringcontractwasawardedfortheplanningofthenewFauquierCampus.PhaseIofthecontractprovidesforthecompletionofa

    • TheexistingcrossoverandentranceshouldbeclosedandrelocatedtotheRoute17BusinessandRoute15/29intersection.Thiswillrequiretheinstallationofatrafficsignal,constructionofaconnectorroadtothepresentserviceroad,andupgradingoftheserviceroad.

    Althoughthetrafficsafetyimpactmaybelimited,theaestheticimpactspersist.Eventheverybestlandfilloperationshaveunpleasantodors,noise,andlitterproblems.Thus,thelikelihoodoftheseproblemsoccurringattheLFCCcampusisveryhigh.ThisresultsinanunattractiveaccesstotheCommunityCollege.Someofthelandfilloperationswilllikelybeinviewofthecampus.Althoughtreescreeningisplanned,thelandfillpropertywillrequireaneightfootchainlinkfencetoprohibitaccessduringtheoffhours.

    • Thelayoutforthetreescreening,itslength,widthandplantmaterialsshouldbefinalizedbytheFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsandreviewedandagreedtobytheVCCS.

  • • Theappearanceofthegatedentrancetothelandfillshouldalsobeaddressedsincethiswillbeseenbyeveryonedrivingintothecampus.

    • Additionally,recyclingfacilities,hazardousmaterialreceptaclesformotoroil,paint,etc.,truckscales,andpotentiallytruckwashingfacilitieswillallbelocatedalongtheproposedaccessroad.ItisrecommendedthattheFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsworkcloselywiththeVCCStoensurethatproperscreening,littercontrol,anddecisionsregardingthelocationoftruckscales,recyclingfacilities,hazardousmaterialreceptacles,truckwashingstations,andotherperipherallandfilloperationsareincorporatedintothelandfillexpansion.

    “OurCollege'sfoundersgaveusthename"LFCC"becausetheyweresimplyfollowingtheVCCSprotocolofnamingcampusesafterlocations(NOVA'sManassasCampus,forexample),andcollegesafteraregionorlocalidentity.

    UnlikeCentralVirginiaCommunityCollegeandPiedmontCommunityCollege,ourCollegecouldn'teasilybenamedafteraregionsinceourregioncoversalittlebitofeverythinginnorthernVirginiaexceptNOVA.Ofcourse,thename"LordFairfax"andtheregularuseofhiscrestarenowbeinghotlydebated.

    Ihavenoofficialdocumentationonthecampusnamingprocess.This[is]whatIgatheredfrominterviewswhenIwaswritingtheCollege'shistory:

    Intheearlydays,therewasno"MiddletownCampus."ItwasjustLFCC.

    Fauquierbecameknownasthe"FauquierCampus"becausethecampusislocatedinthecounty,outsideWarrenton'scitylimits.Plus,becausesomanyofthedonorslivedsouthofthecampus,itwasalsoprudenttofocusonthecounty'snameratherthanthecity'sname.Moreover,LFCC'sWorkforceservicesandNOVAwerealwaysinatugofwaraboutwhichCollegegotwhichaccount.Thename"Fauquier"seemedtoaddressthatLFCCwasn'tmovinginonNOVAterritory,bydoingtrainingforManassascompaniesthathadWarrentonoffices.

    ForthefirstyearsofFauquier'sexistence,thecampuswassucha"holeinthewall"--littlemorethanabarn--thatnoonewouldhaveconsideredhavinganofficialcampusnamingceremony.Bythetimewehadarealfacility,thename"FauquierCampus"hadbecomethenorm.

    Initially,therewasLFCCandtheFauquierCampus.TextbookdeliveriesandlabsupplieswenttotherealLFCC,whichhappenedtohaveaMiddletownaddress,andthentraveledoverthemountaintoFauquier.WhenWINCannouncedthatLFCCwasclosedforbadweather,theyalwaysmeantMiddletown--notthatcampustotheeast.

    PresidentJohnJ."Ski"SygielskistarteddifferentiatingthetwocampusesbycallingonetheFauquierCampusandtheothertheMiddletownCampus.That'swhenourstationery,businesscardsandsignagereflectedthatwehavetwonamedcampuses.
