Duringthe1994SessionoftheGeneralAssembly,$200,000wasappropriatedtobeginplanningfortheLordFairfaxCommunityCollege,FauquierCounty(Warrenton)Campus.

InSeptemberof1994,theFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsidentifieda47acretrackofland,locatedjustsouthofWarrenton,Virginia,alongRoutes15,17and29,foruseindevelopingtheFauquierCampusofLordFairfaxCommunityCollege.ThepropertytobeconveyedtotheCommonwealthofVirginia,StateBoardforCommunityCollegesisvaluedat$553,200.InMarchof1995,anarchitectural/engineeringcontractwasawardedfortheplanningofthenewFauquierCampus.PhaseIofthecontractprovidesforthecompletionofa

ComprehensiveMasterPlan.Inaddition,thiscontractprovidesforthecompletionofthepreliminarydesigndocumentsforthefirstphaseofthiscampus,includingtheconstructionofa62,180grosssquarefootadministration/classroombuilding,a600spaceparkinglotandassociatedsiteimprovements.

• TheexistingcrossoverandentranceshouldbeclosedandrelocatedtotheRoute17BusinessandRoute15/29intersection.Thiswillrequiretheinstallationofatrafficsignal,constructionofaconnectorroadtothepresentserviceroad,andupgradingoftheserviceroad.

Althoughthetrafficsafetyimpactmaybelimited,theaestheticimpactspersist.Eventheverybestlandfilloperationshaveunpleasantodors,noise,andlitterproblems.Thus,thelikelihoodoftheseproblemsoccurringattheLFCCcampusisveryhigh.ThisresultsinanunattractiveaccesstotheCommunityCollege.Someofthelandfilloperationswilllikelybeinviewofthecampus.Althoughtreescreeningisplanned,thelandfillpropertywillrequireaneightfootchainlinkfencetoprohibitaccessduringtheoffhours.

• Thelayoutforthetreescreening,itslength,widthandplantmaterialsshouldbefinalizedbytheFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsandreviewedandagreedtobytheVCCS.


• Theappearanceofthegatedentrancetothelandfillshouldalsobeaddressedsincethiswillbeseenbyeveryonedrivingintothecampus.

• Additionally,recyclingfacilities,hazardousmaterialreceptaclesformotoroil,paint,etc.,truckscales,andpotentiallytruckwashingfacilitieswillallbelocatedalongtheproposedaccessroad.ItisrecommendedthattheFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisorsworkcloselywiththeVCCStoensurethatproperscreening,littercontrol,anddecisionsregardingthelocationoftruckscales,recyclingfacilities,hazardousmaterialreceptacles,truckwashingstations,andotherperipherallandfilloperationsareincorporatedintothelandfillexpansion.

• Further,theactualrouteoftheroadintothelandfillshouldbeagreedtobytheVCCSandtheFauquierCountyBoardofSupervisors.


AnecdotalBackgroundInformationConcerningLFCCFacilityNamesSource:KimLewis,LFCCprofessorofEnglishDr.KimLewis,ProfessorofEnglish,researchedandwroteahistoryofLFCCthroughthefirst25years.KimBlosser,LFCCpresident,emailedandaskedheraquestionrelatedtocampusnamesandthiswasherresponse:

“OurCollege'sfoundersgaveusthename"LFCC"becausetheyweresimplyfollowingtheVCCSprotocolofnamingcampusesafterlocations(NOVA'sManassasCampus,forexample),andcollegesafteraregionorlocalidentity.

UnlikeCentralVirginiaCommunityCollegeandPiedmontCommunityCollege,ourCollegecouldn'teasilybenamedafteraregionsinceourregioncoversalittlebitofeverythinginnorthernVirginiaexceptNOVA.Ofcourse,thename"LordFairfax"andtheregularuseofhiscrestarenowbeinghotlydebated.

Ihavenoofficialdocumentationonthecampusnamingprocess.This[is]whatIgatheredfrominterviewswhenIwaswritingtheCollege'shistory:

Intheearlydays,therewasno"MiddletownCampus."ItwasjustLFCC.

Fauquierbecameknownasthe"FauquierCampus"becausethecampusislocatedinthecounty,outsideWarrenton'scitylimits.Plus,becausesomanyofthedonorslivedsouthofthecampus,itwasalsoprudenttofocusonthecounty'snameratherthanthecity'sname.Moreover,LFCC'sWorkforceservicesandNOVAwerealwaysinatugofwaraboutwhichCollegegotwhichaccount.Thename"Fauquier"seemedtoaddressthatLFCCwasn'tmovinginonNOVAterritory,bydoingtrainingforManassascompaniesthathadWarrentonoffices.

ForthefirstyearsofFauquier'sexistence,thecampuswassucha"holeinthewall"--littlemorethanabarn--thatnoonewouldhaveconsideredhavinganofficialcampusnamingceremony.Bythetimewehadarealfacility,thename"FauquierCampus"hadbecomethenorm.

Initially,therewasLFCCandtheFauquierCampus.TextbookdeliveriesandlabsupplieswenttotherealLFCC,whichhappenedtohaveaMiddletownaddress,andthentraveledoverthemountaintoFauquier.WhenWINCannouncedthatLFCCwasclosedforbadweather,theyalwaysmeantMiddletown--notthatcampustotheeast.

PresidentJohnJ."Ski"SygielskistarteddifferentiatingthetwocampusesbycallingonetheFauquierCampusandtheothertheMiddletownCampus.That'swhenourstationery,businesscardsandsignagereflectedthatwehavetwonamedcampuses.

Note:Itwasn’tuntiltheendofthe1990’s/early2000’sthatLFCCletterheadhadbothcampusnames/addressesatthebottom.Untilthen,collegeletterheadstated“LFCC”withaMiddletown
