The�Township�of�South�Glengarry�has�demonstrated�that�we�canreduce�the�amount�of�waste�going�to our�landfills,�but�we�cando�more! �Refer�to�the�useful�tips�and�advice�throughout�thiscalendar�for�even�more�ways�to�'trim�our�wasteline'�this�year.
• Recycling�bins�are�available�for�purchase�at�the�TownshipOffice,�6�Oak�Street,�Lancaster,�Ontario,�from�Monday�to�Friday,between�8:30�am�and�4�pm.�Cost�is�$7.00 per�bin.
• Recycling�and�waste�material�must�be�placed�at�the�roadside�by6�am�on�your�scheduled�garbage�and�recycling�collection�days.Collection�times�are�subject�to�change�without�prior�notice.

of�waste�each�year.�That's�in�excess�of 2�kilogram�per
person�per�day�-�more�than�almost�any�other�country.*
Conduct�a�household�waste�audit�to�find�out�if�some�of�the�materialyou’re�sending�to�landfills�can�be�redirected. Here’s�how:
• With�your�family�members,�empty�your�bag�of�garbage�ontosheets�of�newspaper.
• Item�by�item,�determine�which�materials�could�have�beenrecycled,�composted�or�donated�for�re-use.
• Consult�frequently�with�your�recycling�guidelines.• List�the�changes�your�family�could�make�to�get�to�zero�waste.

Waste-Free Ontario ActIn�November�of�2016,�the�Waste�Diversion�Act�was�repealed�andreplaced�by�the�Waste-Free�Ontario�Act,�which�includes�boththe�Waste�Diversion�Transition�Act�and�the�Resource�Recovery�andCircular�Economy�Act. This�new�legislation�will�have�a�major�impact�on�municipal�wastemanagement�and,�most�importantly,�on�waste�diversion�programsyou�may�operate�now�or�have�planned�for�the�future. Municipal�blue�box�recycling�programs�will�undergo�some�of�thebiggest�changes,�as�municipalities�will�have�new�options�-�to�actas�service�providers�to�producers�who�are�required�to�pay�for�theseprograms,�to�work�with�private�service�providers,�or�opt�out�fromproviding�service�altogether. It�is�in�the�best�interest�of�municipal�governments�that�this�workgets�done�as�quickly�as�possible,�as�the�current�proposal�totransition�the�Blue�Box�is�expected�to�take�at�least�another�six�yearsand�will�cost�municipalities�an�estimated�$780�million.�Municipalitiescan�save�$130�million�per�year�by�accelerating�this�transition. Using�the�3R's�(Reduce,�Reuse�and�Recycle)�we�are�trying�to�reduce�the�impacton�the�environment�by�diverting�some�of�this�waste�through�our�various�programs. What�you�can�do�to�help�our�environment.
• Donate�construction�and�demolition�materials�that�you�don't�need�to�alocal�affiliate�of�Habitat�for�Humanity�or�other�similar�organization.
• Consider�renovating your�space�instead�of�completely�gutting�and�rebuilding it.• Sort�waste�as�it�is�created�into�things�that�can�be�recycled,�things�to�be�reused,and�things�to�be�thrown�away.

Leaf and Yard WasteA�special�collection�of�leaf�and�yard�waste�willtake�place�on�regular�collection�days�the�weekof�May�10th,�2021. South�Glengarry�Residents�are�asked�to�place�leafand�yard�waste�at�the�curb�along�with�regularwaste�at�6�am.
• Leaf�and�yard�waste must�be contained�inpaper�bags�or�reusable�containers�such�asgarbage�cans�or�recycling�bins.
• There�is no bag�limit.
• Leaf�and�yard�waste�will�be�collected�by�aseparate�designated�truck.
• Sticks�and�branches�up�to�4ft�are�accepted,�aslong�as�they�are�bundled.

materials�decompose,�and�become�a�nutrient-rich�soil
amendment.�Your�lawn�and�garden�will�love�it!
Why�Compost:• Reduce�Greenhouse�Gases.�Diverting�Organics�from�thelandfill�reduces�methane�emissions.
• Stop�Soil�Loss.�The�Earth�annually�loses�75-100�GigaTonnes�ofarable�topsoil.�Composting�returns�nutrients�back�into�soils.
• Save�Water.�Organic�matter�retains�18-20�times�its�weight�inwater.�1%�organic�matter�in�the�top�6''�of�soil�can�hold�27,000gallons�of�water�per�acre.
Compost�Tips:
• Build�Diversity.�One�spoon�of�healthy�garden�soil�has�billionsof�bacteria,�several�yards�of�fungal�flaments,�thousands�ofprotozoa,�and�lots�of�nematodes.�Feed�the�soil�and�the�plantswill�grow.
• Ways�to�Use�Compost;�soil�amendment�(turned�into�the�soil),top�dressing�or�mulch�(on�top�to�be�absorbed�over�time),�andone�inch�(or�2cm)�of�finished�compost�can�kickstart�a�garden.

Recycling MattersFor�decades,�Canada�and�other�developed�countries�had�beenselling�their�waste�plastic�to�China,�where�it�was�sorted,�cleaned,processed�and�re-used�in�the�country's�massive�manufacturingindustry.�That�all�changed�on�Jan.�1,�2018,�when�China�beganrefusing�shipments�of�a�wide�variety�of�plastic�waste�products,including�plastic�contaminated�by�foreign�materials�such�as�food�orfabric.�This�left�many�countries�in�a�bind,�including�Canada,�wherewaste�disposal�is�handled�on�a�municipal�and�regional�level.�TheCanadian�Plastics�Industry�Association�says�it�has�most�of�the�meansrequired�to�handle�Canada's�plastic�waste�within�the�country,�but�itwill�take�years�to�build�up�the�scale�to�handle�all�of�it. In�the�end,�the�goal�is�to�reach�a�zero�waste�plastic�economy.�Theproblem�with�achieving�a�zero-waste�economy,�in�a�nutshell,�ispeanut�butter.�Plastic�containers�that�are�collected�with�food�stillinside�-�peanut�butter�being�the�most�common�example�-�morework�to�clean�than�they're�worth.1
What�is�in�all�that�trash?�Plastics�take�up�7%�of�the�volume�and30%�of�the�weight�of�the�total�garbage�flow.�Right�now�around80%�of�municipal�waste�in�Canada�ends�up�being�dumped�in�alandfill.2
Here’s�why�recycling�remains�important:• Eight�million�tonnes�of�plastic�waste�are�being�dumped�into�theworld's�oceans�each�year,�or�one�dump-truck�load�of�stuff�everyminute.�At�this�rate,�it's�expected�that�plastic�will�outweigh�fishin�the�world's�oceans�by�2050.1

Window�Cleaner:�Mix�2�Tbsp�of�vinegarand�4�cups�of�water�in�a�spray�bottle. Tub�and�Tile�Cleaner:�For�a�routineclean,�apply�baking�soda�to�a�wet�sponge;scrub�and�wait�for�a�few�minutes�beforerinsing�clean.�Scrub�tough�soap�scum�witha�borax�and�lemon�juice�(or�vinegar)�paste;rinse�off�thoroughly.
